3/24/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 3/24Spring Break is Here
The beauty of Spring is on the horizon. The birds are beginning to chirp, blossoms are seeking the warmth of the sun, and the weather is dawning into a new season. Welcome to the beauty of this short season in Northeast Ohio. Embrace this time, brace for the Spring showers for the April and May flowers will bloom shortly.
Living in this region, we become accustomed to the highs and lows of the weather, but there is one weather pattern we can control...our personal weather. Every day, we walk our routines with our words, deeds, and behaviors. We, in turn, carry our own weather. Although retired, Mr. Armelli always is a perfect example of this mantra. He stood outside in the rain, snow, and sun exclaiming to ALL: It's a beautiful day! Now, more than ever--carrying our own feelings about our autonomy, our place in this world, and connectivity to others need to rise to the surface of those things that we can control. We are finally in Spring! We are finally at Spring Break. Personally, I am physically and mentally exhausted and looking forward to a refresh. Take time to re-energize and focus on the long and winding road that we will face as we close out the season and press on to a rest of quarter. National Honors Society Induction Ceremony
The Four Pillars of National Honor Society
Scholarship is characterized by a commitment to learning. A student is willing to spend the necessary time to cultivate his/ her mind in the quest for knowledge. This pillar can only be achieved through diligence and effort. Scholarship means always doing the best work possible, regardless of impending reward. Service: The pillar of service can be reached in a variety of ways. The willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind is a quality that is essential in NHS members. As a service club, the National Honor Society is highly concerned with giving its all to the school and community at large. Leadership: Leaders take the initiative to aid others in a wholesome manner throughout their daily activities. Leaders sacrifice their personal interests in order to yield to the needs of others. Leaders need wisdom and self-confidence to affect change in all aspects of their lives. Some examples of leadership can include, but are not limited to, leading group activities in the classroom and in the community, being an officer in a club, being a primary member of the band or choir, or being the captain of a sports team. Character: Character is what distinguishes one individual from another. It is the product of constant striving to make the right choices day after day. Students with good character demonstrate respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship in all of their actions. Members
During the NHS ceremony, I took a moment to recognize Vincent Schmidt who completed his first solo flight as a pilot prior to the NHS ceremony. Vincent will be soaring to new heights after graduation!
The Schedule for the Next (2) Weeks
PBIS Behavior Expectations
In an effort to promote the types of behaviors we would like to see in our school, during Topper Times, Freshman Mentoring, and Circuit periods over the past two weeks, students were engaged in lessons regarding the CHS Behavior Expectations. The expectations were created through the collaboration of the CHS PBIS team, staff, and students this school year. Below are the expectations as they align with our CHS Core Values, design courtesy of CHS students Cassie Bright, Jordan Cvelbar, Estefany Vazquez, Sadie Kuhnle, William Brooker, and Teagan Koehler: Special thanks to Ms. Mary Pat Pavicic and the entire PBIS team for their exceptional work this year.

ACADEC Clinches 28 STATE Medals
(Kelly Misch- Contributor)
March 17, 2023 -- Chardon High School’s Academic Decathlon team impressed at the State tournament held at John Carroll University March 10-11, in all hauling 28 well-earned medals back to Hilltopper town. The 20-member team likewise shined in virtual regional contests earlier this year, garnering 26 regional medals, including 10 gold. Chardon ACADEC operates under the dedicated leadership of Coach Allen Herner — advisor to the team since the 2010-11 school year, leading the team each and every year to State-level competition beginning with his first season aboard. In Hilltopper tag-teaming spirit, CHS science teacher Dr. Rebecca Schneider was at the helm for the team’s 2023 State tournament journey. Coach Herner stated, “Dr. Schneider took on a substantial workload in getting our students to the State competition and advocating for them while there. I can’t imagine the event being such a success for our students without her.” The Chardon Board of Education will recognize the Chardon Academic Decathlon team for its 2023 accomplishments during the student recognition segment of the March 20 regular board meeting scheduled for 6:30p.m. at 428 North Street (44024). The segment is towards the start of the meeting. Congratulations ACADEC! Rotary Speech Contest

Charlotte Jons Makes Chardon History as OSDA POI STATE Champ!
Chardon High School junior and Ohio Speech and Debate Association three-time high school State qualifier and 2023 national qualifier Charlotte Jons completed seven rounds of competition in this weekend's OSDA state tournament, culminating in a thrilling finish as the STATE CHAMPION in the Program Oral Interpretation event.
Among 1,000 Ohio high school students competing at the state level this weekend, Charlotte was one of 53 competing specifically in POI. The tournament was held March 3-4 at Austintown Fitch High School in Austintown.
Charlotte combines prose and poetry around a central theme for the POI event each year. This year, her POI speech was centered on what Charlotte describes as "the need for dark humor in our current society".
She stated, "The speech explores the Sad Clown Paradox as well as the phenomenon of comedians using laughter to overcome personal struggles."
A CHS pioneer in OSDA competition, Charlotte has paved the way for Chardon as a sole member of the school's speech and debate team. She has been competing since her days at Chardon Middle School with annual high achievement, including placing sixth in the 2022 State tournament and earning a Special Distinction mark this school year — an award that only 18% of speech and debate competitors nationwide earn in their high school years.
Serving as Chardon's longtime OSDA coach is Amy Roediger — Charlotte's mom — who is a seasoned speech and debate coach and an award-winning Mentor High School chemistry teacher.
The Chardon Board of Education looks forward to recognizing Charlotte for her State championship win and stellar 2022-23 season at an upcoming board meeting.
Congratulations Hilltalker! Way to represent and talk your way to the top!

CHS Choirs performed at the (OMEA)
The choirs did a wonderful job in their preparation and performance! The ratings range from 1 being the strongest performance to 5 being the lowest. Chorale received the top rating of a 1, receiving straight 1's from all three of the judges for their performance. Chorale received a 2 on sight reading but brought home a composite score of a 1 for the day. Chorale performed some diverse and powerful tunes; Ubi Caritas (Gjeilo), TaReKita (Esmail), and Soon-ah Will Be Done (Dawson). Treble Choir received a 2 from the performance judges and had a strong showing with a 1 rating on the sight reading portion. The treble choir performed several beautiful pieces and an interesting complex and fun tune from Malaysia; Hold Fast to Dreams (LaBarr), Ikan Kekek (Hang Tan), Shadow River (Hagenberg). Congratulations to our CHS choir students on their outstanding commitment to excellence through performance.
This is an adjudicated event providing an opportunity for feedback and to grow our musicianship through performance. The event consists of performing three pieces for three judges. One of these pieces is from a required list of literature to choose from, the other pieces provide a varied presentation. Once the ensembles have performed they head to the Sight Reading Room. During this time, the students are given a new piece of literature to learn with 5 minutes of preparation. They sing using the solfege system to develop their understanding of pitch within the new piece and within minutes are expected to sing the piece without accompaniment.
Topp-notch A cappella
The ensemble performed Set Fire to the Rain (Adele), She's Got A Way (Billy Joel), and Viva La Vida (Coldplay). The students finished the day, by visiting the 6th and 7th-grade choirs. Topp-notch A cappella served as wonderful ambassadors for CHS and the Chardon choral program.
4E Focus: Hilltopper Alumni in the News

Kirstin completed a run of the musical Guys and Dolls this fall in Florida, playing the lead role of Sarah Brown. Kirstin is currently on the road with Paw Patrol Live and will be performing at Playhouse Square this week. Keep up the great work Kirstin!
CHS Alumni Ethan Peterson is pursuing a musical theater degree at Penn State University. Ethan is playing the lead role of The Baker. Very proud of Ethan for his accomplishments!

The Week in Reflection: 3/3
Three fourths, the fourth, rounding third and heading home, crunch time, the finish line. Down the stretch they come...the list goes on to ways that we can describe the transition to the fourth quarter. On one hand, it feels that we just started...on the other hand, it feels like things never ended. It's all about perspective.
As you already know, the Week in Reflection provides the lens of my perspective. The school is my second home. For the past three years, I have spent more time in this home making sure that we were prepared for every single pivot like preparing for a rodeo dance.
I used to absolutely hate checklists. Bare with me as I reflect on why checklists have prepared me in my life.
I am the youngest child with siblings who are five and eight years older than me. Growing up in a household with two working parents created many moments for mom and dad to leave a list of tasks to do. Sure, they would get done, but usually after 5 hours of backyard baseball.
College, marriage, career, and children taught me the underline value of a good checklist. Now, I live by them and usually can be found with a list to a list in both written and digital formats.
Taking care of long-term details comes with the territory of someone who is an idealist thinker and worker. Transitioning into the fourth quarter is an exciting time for every grade level. We have all of the senior events, all of the activities, and opportunities. It is a time when many details can slip in the midst of taking your kids to numerous activities, preparing for the week, or making sure that our own children don't walk out of the door without all of the things that they need for the day.
For the past two decades, I have used a three-month calendar to finalize the school year, however--this year, I sent you the whole year. As much as our calendar is posted online and can be viewed in weekly segments, having the freedom to see all the events in a printable format is extremely useful for all our educators, students, and parents. This can be used as a checklist for each day for the big ideas of the academic calendar.
As we walk together this quarter, other checklists are important to survive the wear and tear of the quarter. I have put together a suggested list of 12 important things to check off your to-do list to create new habits in your life.
1. Say, I love you to those you embrace each day.
This simple task can speak volumes to your parents, spouse, children, and siblings and has no age limit to express. Our brain fire so many neurons which release dopamine causing you to feel happy. What a wonderful way to start your day!
2. Actively listen to others
When we actively listen, we pause. Listening allows us to seek the depth of any story and allows us to respond with empathy, understanding, and kindness. Take the time to really listen to your friends, parents, and siblings and watch your relationship change for the better.
3. Read something that engages you every single day
We are always reading. Whether we are perusing signs, billboards, articles, posts, or messages...reading becomes a habit that we often can take for granted. When we read things that engage us we not only become a better reader-we become a diplomat to literacy. Read something that engages you each day and experience a new you that can articulate in ways that you never thought you could.
4. Walk or be physically active for 20 consecutive minutes
Physical activity is so beneficial for our physical, social, and mental well-being. Scheduling the time each week to walk, workout, and a little fresh air can provide more energy and positivity to your own outlook on living.
5. Remove fear by thinking more positive about YOU
We can control three things in life: What we think, what we say, and how we behave. Furthermore, these three things can allow us to control our attitude, effort, and approach to everything that we aspire to be or do. Do not be afraid to fail. Face your fears with what you can control and watch parts of your life grow in positive ways.
6. Think Positive, Reflect, or Journal
You do not have to be religious to reflect on the simple things in life. A sunrise, sunset, smile, a moment of kindness. These moments can allow you to reflect on all of the good that surrounds you in your life and ground you to things bigger than ourselves.
7. Unplug without a device for 1 hour or more each day.
When we unplug, we communicate in natural ways that can simplify life. Disconnecting for periods of time can re-center relationships and actually can lower our blood pressure as we live in the present.
8. Never give up
If at first, you don't succeed...
we all have heard the story. However, through the trials of losing the battles of our day- we expand our territory to do more and be more. Never give up.
9. Surround yourself with positive people
We become an amalgamation of our surroundings. Therefore, surround yourself with people who challenge you to be a better person at all times. It can be hard to do, but when we do this- we learn how to happy and the best version of ourselves.
10. Write down your gratitude
The thousands of words that I write each week are my ways to show gratitude to you. I do not have to do this. I choose to. I write from my heart to show you why I care. Send someone a short note this week, an email, or a card. Pay it forward!
11. Prioritize
As I started this newsletter by talking about checklists...write your goals down. Post your goals. Write a mission statement. Live it, Love it, do it. Do not procrastinate over tasks. Live with purpose!
12. Finish what you start
Is the finish line a barrier, opportunity, or mile marker? The choice is in the eye of the beholder. Once you figure where you are on the map, remove the barriers that hold you back and seize every opportunity along the markers of your life. As Robert Frost notes, choose the road less traveled by....it will make all of the difference!
CHS Building Update: 300's Opened for Business on March 1st
That's like a Disney Park day without all of the thrills. With several maintenance and custodial staff out this week, I joined forces to help finalize a "turn-key" experience for tomorrow.
Special thanks to our Lewis Construction, maintenance and custodial staff, IT Staff, CREW kids, and study hall helpers to make certain that we were ready to go on March 1. There are final tasks that will take place this summer once the tiles come in for the floor.

Softball/ Baseball/ Girl's LAX Spring Schedules
Spring is in the Air?
I was taught to think positively and say a mantra of good thoughts. With hopefully winter in the rearview mirror, and the beauty of the sun and longer days coming---you have to stop and remind yourself of a couple things: (1) Spring is literally two weeks away! and (2) Rain showers bring spring flowers.
Just as February is a month of gratitude, March is a month of wellness. We have to take the time to take care of ourselves and get back into routines that help our mind, body, and spirit.
The fresh air and sunlight help each of us get out of the winter lull, and can help spring back a feeling of joy, gladness, and growth.
This year has been trying on all of us, and as we roll into March, the time we have this month is going to quickly pass us by if we don't stop and see the things around us blossom: nature, relationships, and our own personal growth.
March will come and go without notice. It is so important to seize every moment in front of us as we close out another quarter and transition to the 4th quarter. I really appreciate your continued support of your children along with the support you provide to us.
Have a great weekend,
Douglas Murray, Principal
