8/27/2021 The Week in Reflection: 8/27Second Verse---Same as the First
The beginning of the school year is always filled with activities such as orientations, class meetings, navigating new routes, classes...all to set up the new normal. Can you believe that we are concluding week two already?! There are so many amazing things that our staff and students were accomplishing this week towards the mission of our school district of high achievement for ALL students where learning is our most important work.
If you are unaware of this blog called the Week in Reflection, the purpose of this communication is to share with everyone all the work happening at CHS each week from a principal's perspective. This newsletter is a very therapeutic (and time-consuming) reflection of all the things that I see each week. You will see photographs, short reflections, opportunities, and event information. I am not an author. I am just a simple man that loves what I do...I love kids and want to help each child find their purpose. In this Week in Reflection, you will read and see so many wonderful opportunities and experiences that show the engagement of our students and staff within our mission. The week was filled with teachers and students expanding their knowledge as they began to dig deeper into the standards in each course. It was a warm week, but certainly beautiful. Take a few moments to peruse all of the great things happening at CHS. Shining Star CLE : Olivia Nelson (Top 10 Finalist)
CHS Senior OIivia Nelson has been selected to perform with the TOP 10 Singers in the Shining Star CLE fundraiser benefiting Menorah Park of Beachwood. These performances are a FREE virtual event, held on Sunday evening, August 29th @ 7:00 PM and WE NEED YOUR VOTE!
Olivia is an amazing performer and will be bringing it to the competition. Olivia recorded her performance at the end of July in the Shining Star CLE studio. The professional judges limit the field to the top 4 performers out of 10. Beyond that, it is up to the fans to weigh in. We need you to watch and text your vote! Top 4 prizes range from $1,000-$10,000. Help spread the word to friends and family and let's rally behind Olivia! Last year, Chardon's Ethan Peterson ('21) won 1st place in the competition earning a $10,000 scholarship for college and $2,500 toward the CHS Choir Department. Prior top-tier CHS performers in the competition include Madie Houser ('20) and Kirsten Henry ('18). Watch as the Top-10 Finalists put on the performance of their lifetimes live-streamed and open to the public on August 29, 2021 at 7 p.m. Watch it all LIVE via this website, Facebook Live or the Shining Star CLE YouTube Channel Let's DO are part to support Olivia! One of the ways that we record school data and outcomes is through our school profile. Each year, our counselors collect information and document data points that work as a companion to the state report card. Furthermore, our district puts together a quality profile that adds further qualitative and quantitative outcomes for our families. Take some time to see the great information enclosed.

Important: Seamless Summer Program
Dear Parent/Guardian:
We Need Your Help! Our school is participating in a federal program called the Seamless Summer Program SSO. This program allows all children in our school to eat at no charge. However, some education programs we provide are funded with state dollars. We will no longer be collecting Free and Reduced-Price Applications This year, instead, we must collect the Household Income Survey. This form helps us collect household information for all students attending SSO schools. Without this information, SCHOOL NAME could lose important state funding for educational programs that our students are entitled to. What You Can Do Please take a moment to complete the form and return it to your student’s school. The Household Income Survey captures information and ensures the district/school receives state funding for education programs. We’re excited to offer no-cost meals to all students and appreciate your help. In order to continue to offer this program, we must If you have any questions, please contact Josephine Culliton at 440-286-0425. Save the Date: September 7, 2021 Open House/ Meet the Teachers

Douglas Murray, Principal 8/17/2021 The Week in Reflection: 8/20/21Welcome Back!Welcome to Season Six: Episode 1 of the Week in Reflection. As you may or not be aware, I often talk about our mission, vision, and core values. The very core of everything that we do mirrors this compass. The last eighteen months created a whirlwind of emotions for all of us. Instead of dwelling on the things that we cannot control, our eyes are fixed on what we can control in the world that we live in: nurturing kindness, nurturing routines, and nurturing learning. The core values are instrumental in everything we do at Chardon High School. These values embody our actions, live inside of the standards, and mirror the expectations that we share in Chardon. The experiences that we have faced provided us a time to reflect on many important aspects of school. The one part that keeps ringing in our minds is the value of nurturing ourselves back. The focus this year will be just that- Nurturing ourselves back to our mission without barriers to hold us back. The time is right to cultivate and nurture our relationships, our learning, our achievement, our experiences, our mind, our wellness. Is it going to be easy? No. Is it really important? Absolutely! Our students deserve this, our families long for these goals, and our teachers are ready to prepare for this work-together. This week provided us the opportunity to come together as a staff and as a school community this week at Chardon High School. The first two days of this week were filled with team-building exercises that provided moments to purge the past, and build the future. Our team feels energized for the beginning of the school year. On Tuesday, our student leaders welcomed hundreds of new students to the high school with a picnic party followed by a class meeting and guided tours by our student leaders. It was amazing to see so many students come to this event! On opening day, we welcomed our students back to school! After a brief summer of planning for this day- we welcomed over 1,100 students back into the routine of academics. The students have been outstanding and our supportive staff has walked beside all of the students throughout the day guiding them. I have to say this in conclusion to the opening. I have never experienced such a warm, positive, respectful, and attentive group of students than this eighth grade class. They were absolutely perfect during a 30-minute class meeting on Thursday. Thirty minutes at any age is hard to stay still--but, that moment will stay with me for a long time. We will continue with our presentations on Friday, Monday, and Tuesday to close out the grade levels. Best in the LandThe Hilltopper marching band will open their season with a “Believe” show. Their opening downfield number is Do You Believe in Love by Huey Lewis and the News, the Topperette feature is I’m a Believer by the Monkees, and the closer features the Majorettes and a band dance in Don’t Stop Believin’ by journey. The band will also be adding the NFL on Fox theme to their pregame music lineup. The Hilltopper shout out video is from Jonathan Cain, Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductee and member of the rock group, Journey.
