4/26/2021 The Week in Reflection: 4/30
Time. This is one thing that is always inevitable. Yet, this one thing can be experienced differently by each of us. It is hard to believe how quickly our time has passed. Every second inside of every minute can pass how we choose to use it. If we chose to stare at a clock, time would feel like forever. The more we are all actively involved with tasks, events, and enjoyment--the faster time is experienced by each of us. The old adage, "Time flies when you are having fun" rings a persistent tone this time of year. Why? Mostly due to the constant movement, experiences, events, and activities that happen inside of the time that we are given. The last three months have been packed with events each week, and it feels like life is become more and more normal. Recently, I spoke to the senior class about all of the memories that they are making and how these moments should be cherished and remembered. These are great days for our class of 2021!
Seniors: After today, you have 15 class days and 29 calendar days before graduation. It can seem like a lifetime or can be a flash in front of you. The choice is yours. Seniors, it seems like the finish line has already come and gone...but there is still essential time left. Time for yourself, time for each other, time for learning, and memories to be made. You only graduate high school once, Embrace it, live each moment, be active in your choices. The choices that you make today can determine the person that you become. Be true to who you are and keep your eyes on the goal--you are too close to let go of your dreams. Juniors Your 28 school days are going to be relentless. Focus on managing your time on what you can control. Your job is your academics. Your job is transitioning into the leaders of our school. Your job remains clear; YOU matter, YOUR grades matter; YOUR decisions matter. Learn from those that have gone before you and seize little opportunities that arise. We believe in you. Sophomores Your 28 school days linger with a reminder that you are about to transition into a challenging year. Many of you are learning the difference between dependence versus independence. The time is now to walk the talk. You are just coming out of your shell, and wondering what is up, down, and around you. You have seen so many challenging moments with relationships, coursework, and leadership but you are wondering if anyone notices you. We do, but we are not going to hold your hand through this--it is time to choose. We will always be there for you. Freshman Your 28 school days are determined by the habits that you have made. So many people have walked beside you, guided you, and assisted you. You recognize that you are a part of a bigger family but sometimes feel like the little sibling. You have an essential role. You are the key to the transition of our 8th graders. What you say---they believe. What you do---younger students follow. In reality, your task is enormous in living our core values not only for yourself but for your classmates. Believe in YOU! 8th Graders Your 28 days are so imperative to your maturation and growth. SO many of you are ending this year with high school credit--and that is very exciting! At times, it has felt like you were the only ones in the building this year. Our staff have spent so much time and energy in guiding you and investing in you because you are essential part of our story. You made history this year by coming to the building; the time is NOW to be the leader that we prepared you for. Seize these days to look in the mirror and reflect on your growth along the way---all the while finishing your work and making those marks! Staff You are the conductor of the music that we hear each day. Sure, the sound may resonate well from a distance, but only you see what needs to be refined. Continue to coordinate the sound with the beauty that sets the tempo of our pulse as a whole. After most performances, the conductor bows while the orchestra receives the accolades. WE see your influence. WE appreciate your countless preparation. WE see your impact- especially after a long tour. U. S. News Report

Families of the Class of 2021: A Reflection from a parent's perspectiveIt is hard to fathom how fast our time has come and gone this year. Where did our time go? Did I do enough, say enough, or even prepare you enough for this moment? I look at you and see me. I look at my own struggles, joys, and moments of excitement (when I was your age) and wonder how quickly our time has come and gone. Do you I am your biggest fan? Do you know that I will always be there during good times and bad? Do you know how much my love is unconditional for you? I am so proud of you, and I know that these 29 days are going to be tough for you. I know that you are spent, exhausted, and ready to move on...but, never forget how you got to this moment. Never forget the failures and success that refined you. Never forget the support that each of us provided for you and always will. So, in these last school days live every moment in the present. Love every celebration, and know that journey only begins when you cross the finish line. You are almost there! Hang on, push forward, dig deeper, and know that my embrace is a door away. We believe in you--BELIEVE IN YOUR ABILITY-- your journey is a moment away! Have a beautiful weekend with family and friends! Douglas Murray, Principal 4/20/2021 The Week in Reflection: 4/23Three Little Birds![]() Don't worry about a thing Cause every little thing gonna be all right Singing don't worry about a thing Cause every little thing gonna be all right Rise up this morning Smiled with the rising sun Three little birds Pitch by my doorstep Singing sweet songs Of melodies pure and true Saying This is my message to you -Bob Marley
I write this Week in Reflection each week while listening to music. What struck me most as I began writing was a sweet melody about 3 Little Birds. Consider the words from the opening line for a moment. If we all truly paused and believed not to worry about a thing--'cause every little thing is going to be all right...we would be living differently. However, we all worry and concern ourselves with outcomes and perfection.
This year hasn't been perfection from any viewpoint. We have become color analysts of global, national, and local decisions this year. Right or wrong with decisions, we are all granted the freedom to choose our response to any outcome in a respectful way. We have seen a lot of compassion this year and we have seen strife and struggle. We have desired normalcy while providing the best possible experiences. We have all wished for more personalized events, and celebrations. Just when things started to get a little back to normal...the snow fell again. I guess we can blame the canceled Maple Festival for some crazy snowfall. As frustrating as it was, it actually made us realize how normal things are with the weather. It seems that we cannot mask the weather. It has been a long year, and it almost feels like school never closed last year. This week, we had a our monthly faculty meeting and covered so many events. It is daunting when you stare at the spreadsheet of dates and experiences. We each need to take it day by day and week by week. The one mantra that came from the meeting was that it was so good to be able to talk about all of these things. Keep in mind that today's stress is tomorrow's opportunity. Yes, there are so many things to check off the list, but at least we have a list. I am very appreciative of your patience as we continue to build each event and detail. The most important thing that we each can do is support each other, our students, our community, and demonstrate gratitude for the little things. So, when you wake up in the morning and smile at the rising sun, pause to hear those three little birds singing sweet songs...and celebrate the moment.--even if they are building a nest above your door and making a mess. The spring brings upon new growth and energy. Smile and seize the beauty in front of you. Make today great and nurture each other! Yes, it wouldn't be a week without me mentioning a core value in the reflection. AIR Testing![]()

Douglas Murray, Principal 4/16/2021 The Week in Reflection: 4/16Life in the FastlaneLife in the Fastlane. This is probably the best phrase, song, and way to describe the past week. Beginning with last weekend, Bob Francis and I were asked to fill in for coach to run JV Baseball. It was invigorating for Bob and I to work with the boys. They were able to see us in a different lens and we swept Aurora at Munson. A graduate reached out to me regarding filling in last weekend and it really made me pause. Coach Goshe wrote, "see a need, fill a need." As I reflected, it reminded me of ALL of the countless ways that each of us have stepped in so support one another. Pandemic year, or not, our staff have worked intentionally to support and guide our students throughout so many unknowns this year. Another principal (in our league) noted to me last week that we have such amazing students who are so kind and giving of themselves. A guest to our district stated to me that our families are so thoughtful, committed, supportive, and welcoming. Our core values have not been communicated in so many words this year, but the actions of those clear words have. It is those simple examples (from this week alone) that reminds me that taking a moment to get out of the fastlane can help each of us pause and be reminded of our purpose. Ferris Bueller, in the classic film, said it best- "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” There are so many moments that have passed by, and so many moments upcoming. With all of the moving parts that connect to the end the school year-- and with the countless decisions being made on a moments notice--pause, show gratitude, and celebrate the little things inside of each moment. Don't allow your life in the fastlane --make you lose your mind. Senior Events UpdateSent to Seniors and Families on Wednesday I have never experienced a year that was so malleable and filled with adjustments, restrictions, and change. The amount of pivoting and flexibility has been extraordinary by our teachers, students, and families. Has it been perfect, no. What has been perfect this year? Have we been intentional, yes. Every decision that we have made has been scrutinized and reviewed countless times by internal and external administrators at school and in our county. Throughout every decision, the focus has and always will be what is in the safest interest of the students, and follows every expectation set forth by our district and current health orders. As I write to you today, I can now share that our prom, after prom, and graduation plans have been approved by the health commissioner and superintendent. There are so many more details that we need to plan for now that the first plan has been approved. These details will be communicated in our senior class handbook that we will publish as soon as we complete those details. The application process is open through next Friday, April 16th and we have room for a couple more graduates. Here is the link for students to apply: https://jobs.lever.co/componentrepairtechnologies/de2e9bd8-9c19-4a96-8be9-a296a5648929 This program is designed for graduates that are looking for opportunities and exposure to technical career fields. This is not designed as an alternative to college. The career paths these participants will gain exposure to are highly technical, well paid career fields and many of the folks in these career fields do obtain industry recognized credentials, Associate and Bachelor degrees while working full time. What to Expect:
Each week the Co-Op will spend a portion of their experience working in entry level positions on our shop floor, while also having the opportunity to shadow and learn about the four career paths listed above. In addition, we will have extra-curricular activities provided for the group where the Co-Op’s will connect with their peers and share their experiences in a fun and structured setting. Throughout the four weeks we will provide formal, intentional soft skill training designed to help prepare the co-op for whatever career path they may choose. We will have representatives from local Community and State Colleges on hand as well to discuss blended learning programs with the group such as certificate or degree programs that can be obtained part-time while working in a full-time capacity. CRT supports a culture of continuous learning and employees who have been with the company for more than one year will be eligible for tuition reimbursement in their chosen fields. Welcome Back!
It's the FINAL COUNTDOWN! Now that the Europe song is stuck in your head--it is time to live LIFE IN THE FASTLANE. Oops, I did it again with all of the references to music. Alright, I am done. We are literally going to fly through these last weeks so hold on. As I have shared over the last several weeks of communications, the upcoming long term schedule demonstrates the volume of tasks and events going on at CHS. As we march through the transition to this new season, we are longing for a stretch of dry and sunny days. It certainly has been beautiful around here lately! Enjoy every moment! With or without the beautiful weather, this year has taught us the importance of patience and perseverance. Being patient creates opportunities for growth inside of us which will help us nurture our response to difficult moments. The next two months are going to pass us by in a blink of an eye. It is so important to pause and reflect on each opportunity in front of us. Likewise, demonstrating patience will expand our ability to persevere through moments in our lives that impact us at school, sports, our jobs, and even relationships. As we have shared numerous times throughout this year, our response to any event creates the outcome that we expect. We are waiting on official approval from the health department regarding many events in our monthly calendar such as prom, and graduation. As soon as they are approved, you will know the details. So, to model this for you I am going to end this portion of the Week in Reflection by exclaiming that it is a perfect day to be the best version of ourselves and seize the opportunities in front of us during this beautiful time of year! As we enter deeper into April and May, we are continuing our preparations at Chardon High School for the upcoming AIR exams. The AIR exams are end-of-course exams mandated by the state of Ohio, and students (grades 9-12) earn graduation points regarding their results. HB64 created opportunities for school to extend the dates for these dates. However, Chardon High School will still administer the US History exam for the purpose of attaining graduation seals for all students on the permanent pathway particularly in the class of 2023. Students will take the AIR exams as described below. Here are a few AIR End of Course Testing updates that you need to know.

On Tuesday, April 6th, we finally were able to celebrate our first academic awards ceremony INSIDE of the building with a limited crowd. The ceremony was a beautiful reminder of normalcy, leadership, and perseverance. Special thanks to Mr. Brown, Mr. Mizen, our NHS Officers (current and future), our health department for allowing this event along with G-TV for technical assistance to make this event happen. Special congratulations to our seniors who will be receiving their NHS cords as soon as they arrive. Enclosed is the ceremony, program, photos, and new inductees.
