We Give Thanks
The last three months have gone by like a whirlwind. The older we get the faster time seems to go by. What is great about my job is watching kids grow and mature. It is a joy to watch our kids grow up even when we all want the time to slow down.
Just the other day, the year 2019 popped across my desk. It is sad that 2019 will live married next to a word. Two years have passed and we are about to embark into another year. It becomes natural for us to think about all of the frustration, adjustments, and difficulties we connect to when speaking about an invisible virus. I am not downplaying the virus, but I would like to highlight the gratitude that we have for our students, staff, and families for the resilience, creativity, and ability to adapt. In this special edition of the Week in Reflection, we share our gratitude to our Chardon community. Mrs. Bondi
“The more grateful I am, the more beauty I see.” This is a quote from a gratitude journal by Mary Davis, a long-time advocate for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and leader of the Special Olympics International. Over the course of the last two years, in a time of continuous transition, it has felt difficult to be grateful at times. Yet, when we stop and focus on the small beauties around us, gratitude becomes abundant, yielding even more beauty.
I am grateful for all of the beauty I see in the small moments of life at Chardon High School. I am grateful for the teachers who I see taking time to work with students in the early morning hours or at a library table during learning labs. There is beauty in their hard work, dedication, and in the learning process. I am grateful for the school counselors who I see talking with students on a daily basis, problem solving, supporting, and listening. There is beauty in the relationships and trust they are building. I am grateful for the students who I see leading and lifting up other students. There is beauty in their young leadership and unity. I am grateful for all of the supporting staff throughout the building, who with their presence and hard work, provide a safe, supportive environment where students can learn and grow. They are beautiful people. Most of all, I am grateful for the moments when I get to talk with students, support parents, and work alongside some of the best educators in Ohio. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the Chardon community because it truly is a beautiful place. Wishing you all a very Happy Thanksgiving, filled with moments of gratitude and beauty! Enjoy! ~Mrs. Bondi Mr. Higham
Thanksgiving is a time when we take stock of what we have accomplished over the past year and give thanks to all the wonderful people in our lives who have helped us along the way.
Mostly recently, this time of year also means the Chardon Hilltoppers are playing deep into the high school playoffs! So, what is better than family, friends, food, and football in Ohio? It is easy to get wrapped up in daily obstacles, work dynamics, or an overloaded email box. As a result, many people find themselves obsessing over what they could have more of. Because of this, we often forget to be grateful for what we do have and to reach out to the people who we really are thankful for. Thanksgiving always causes me to hit the pause button and remind myself and anyone who will listen to be thankful for what we have is more fulfilling than recounting what we may want. Every moment of the day is a blessing, including moments with you! So, I want to take a moment to personally thank all of you, my fellow Chardon High School family members, for everything you have done to make this year one we can all be proud of. With that, Happy Thanksgiving! - Mr. Higham Mr. Murray
Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the simple things of life. It is important to take the time to reflect on all of the beauty of the semester. Every single day provides for us an opportunity to give, to learn, and to serve. I am forever grateful to the friends that I have as I walk down each hallway. It is easy to call the staff at CHS my friends. The teachers and staff members energize me with their passion for learning and love of our students. I love my staff, and I am forever grateful for their gifts that they provide our students.
One of the best parts of my day is interacting with students. It is hard to believe that we are almost at the halfway point of the school year. We have such wonderful students! I truly love their kindness, energy, creativity, and leadership. I am so grateful for the beauty they give to the Chardon community. I am a better man just by working beside each of them. From sitting with our eighth graders to meeting with our seniors-- I love spending my time with each of them--even with a little more space between us. I am grateful for the support, encouragement, and assistance that our parents have provided not only me, but to our teachers, coaches, and community. This year has aged all of us, but is through your energy that gives me fuel to get through the events we experience every new day. You continue to model servant leadership to each of us! Most importantly, I am grateful to my beautiful family that sacrifice so much to be with me. They haven't seen me a ton, but they know how much I love them. My wife is truly my best friend. She is beside me at many events, and has been hard on her not to be able to go to all of the events of this school year. I am blessed to have our daughters at Chardon, and I look forward to sharing many memories with them through their years in our district. Thanksgiving is an opportunity to give thanks to the simple things in life: family, friends and familiar fellowship. Let this day be a reminder of how the simple things in life are the strongest reminders of why we work, why we give, and why we serve. Have a beautiful week with your family! -Mr. Murray Topper Club Awards
Our core values recognize Achievement as an essential benchmark of the learning that transpires every day at Chardon High School. We have extraordinary educators that prepare our students for college, career, and life readiness. Our students refine their learning in the classroom and demonstrate their abilities in so many skill sets in extra-curriculars, service, and clubs.
It is our goal that every single person at Chardon will graduate finding his/her purpose. The programs and experiences that students experience at Chardon from grades 8-12 expose them to opportunities to achieve this purpose. More importantly, the relationships that they develop are paramount in their development. Every student matters to us. Taking the time to celebrate achievement collectively provides us the motivation and encouragement to push and strive for success ---so that every student will find their outcome after walking across the stage to further education, immediate employment, enlistment into our armed forces, and even delving into becoming a young entrepreneur. Today, although done via video, we will celebrate many moments of achievement. Being a part of the Topper Club is an extraordinary accomplishment. Our students being recognized in this presentation have maintained a GPA of 3.75 or higher. Looking throughout the slideshow today, we are seeing the future leaders of our ever-changing world. Together, we are witnessing the development of engineers, doctors, lawyers, educators, chemists, advanced manufacturers, cosmetologists, medics, leaders, and philanthropists who see the good in others and respond to the needs of others. We are grateful for their leadership and look forward to the many ways that they will serve our school in the present and the future. Congratulations! Students may pick up their award in the office on Monday. School UpdatesFall End of Course Exam: US Government/ Make-up tests

Have a beautiful, restful, and grateful week with your family and friends!
Douglas Murray, Principal The Week in Reflection will return on December 3, 2021 11/19/2021 The Week in Reflection 11/19
Over the past three weeks, I have been extremely connected to our students in providing communications, counseling, and service to our mission. Mr. Higham, Mrs. Bondi, and I have taken time to meet with numerous students to discuss academics, relationships, and behaviors.
Countless hours have been spent with families, outside agencies, and local advocates to document, plan, and articulate ways to provide and ensure that all of the situations that have come to our offices are comprehensively attended to with precision. In between proactively talking with groups, guiding young students with their words, and situations outside of the school--- we have worked tirelessly to not interrupt learning and targeted outcomes in the classroom. Many of the tasks that the administration works on are unnoticed by many, but they are done out of a commitment to you, our students, and our school. We do this while balancing our own family life. The CHS staff are extraordinary people. They have been assisting me, our assistant principals, and teachers while we manage and lead through covering classes, lending a hand with supervision, and assisting students with their needs. At our core, community driven values and relationships carry the beacon that drives our success. The phrase that breathes energy in our building is Chardon Strong. This mantra is best understood in the following ways: We are Chardon. To live our values means that we are defined by our response to any outcome. We have modeled this for generations of students and parents towards how we respond to difficulty. We are a community in good and bad times who will live with integrity. We have been consistently humbled in our response to moments of success, doubt, and difficulty. We are a district that demonstrates achievement in our outcomes to the state, and outreach to our community and nation. We model respect in our success and failures and how we respond to each other. We recognize the value of seeing the dignity and honor of all of the students and staff members that we encounter. Most importantly, we are optimistic for tomorrow by living our purpose today as we nurture each other. We are Chardon...you cannot be built much tougher. As we transition into a short two day week next week, take the time to give thanks to someone who has made a difference in your life this school year. Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation and/or academic competition in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN involves and teaches researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
Participants in Model UN conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees and assigned countries, or occasionally other organizations or political figures, where they represent members of that body. They are presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic or topics that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the member they represent. At the end of a conference, the best-performing delegates in each committee, as well as delegations, are sometimes recognized with awards. Chardon High School entered the MUN this year (after a year off from in-person competition) under the vision of several students and the direction of Mrs. Kristen Niedzwiecki. Anytime that our students can model real life applications of the lessons that they learn in class--what a phenomenal life skill that is cross-curricular! I am so grateful to the students and Mrs. Kristen Niedzwiecki for their continued focus on living our core values and showcasing the talents of our students! Bio under the scope

Creating digital art relaxes me in between all of the constant running. We all need something that we can do that is peaceful, relaxing, and inspiring. If you do not know, I have many skills that amplify my purpose. Besides be a principal and teacher---I have a degree in Religious Education, Masters in Educational Administration, a Superintendent's License, a background in Graphic Design and Digital Art, and I have worked at golf courses for over 20 years managing turf....and I coach. I am quite unique in the world of school administration. No one can question my work ethic, passion, and commitment to anything that I am involved in. The stress of the last few years have expanded my creativity in creating digital graphics, highlight videos, and photography. We now have a podcast and market our school district more than ever to reach a greater audience.

Have a beautiful weekend with family and friends!
Douglas Murray, Principal 11/12/2021 The Week in Reflection: 11/12Duty and Honor
At the end of World War 1, the armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, became the official day to celebrate all our nation’s veterans. Originally called Armistice Day, it became Veteran’s Day after World War II.
In his speech before assembled West Point cadets, General MacArthur, who reminisced of his 30 plus years of military service, said, " Duty, Honor, Country...those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn." As the general further states in his speech about those three words, "these are some of the things they do. They build your basic character. They mold you for your future roles as the custodians of the nation's defense. They make you strong enough to know when you are weak, and brave enough to face yourself when you are afraid. They teach you to be proud and unbending in honest failure, but humble and gentle in success; not to substitute words for actions, not to seek the path of comfort, but to face the stress and spur of difficulty and challenge." These words resonate today more than ever. Building character, being brave, being humble, and serving others are pillars of humanity. Veterans Day is more than a recognition by athletic teams, going to parades, or services. Veteran's Day is an opportunity to show gratitude and model respect, show honor, and dignity to not only veterans but to each other. Language Arts LIVE!
Originally conceived by Language Arts teacher Dawn Weaver, Language Arts Live! is a speaker and resource program which provides students with examples of how the knowledge they acquire in the classroom translates to the professional world and life beyond high school. The objectives are for students to better understand the various reading, writing and communication skills, including 21st century skills such as the 4Cs (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) they are currently learning and to then be able to apply these skills meaningfully to their lives.
The key to the success of this series is parental and community involvement which reinforces our CHARDON core values. Parents and community professionals come into our classrooms and participate in a panel discussion regarding the use of language and communication skills in various settings. Our seniors, in preparation for college and career readiness, will be exploring technical and career writing with the help of mentors currently in the professions to which the seniors aspire. The variety of professionals explain to the students the importance of effective communication skills, ideally motivating them to be effective communicators themselves. On November 9, Allen Herner, Lynn Monaco, and Joy Tersigni welcomed Michael Daniel, Michael McGreevy, Laura Snyder, Jason Soncrant and Allison Zeiger into their senior ELA courses for this year’s speaker panel. We are appreciative of their time and commitment to our seniors. Panel Credentials: Michael Daniel Regional Vice President of Trader Joe’s Company for the Midwest Michael McGreevy, P.E. Girl Scout Gold Award: Makenna Ricketts![]()
My name is Makenna Ricketts and I am a sophomore here at CHS. I am currently working on my Girl Scout Gold Award, which is equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award in Boy Scouts. I have played lacrosse for more than six years, so I wanted to choose a lacrosse-related topic that I could make into a sustainable project within my community. My Gold Award is an adaptive lacrosse initiative, open to 10-21 year olds with various special needs. As of right now, I am trying to collect equipment donations. I have picked two dates for a donation drive - Wednesday, Nov. 10: 6-8 PM and Wednesday, Nov. 17: 6-8 PM, here at CHS. If you have any retired, and in good condition, lacrosse equipment, please consider donating and putting them to use for a good cause. If you are unable to donate, please share with anyone and everyone you know who may have lacrosse equipment in storage. The equipment can range from boys/girls/goalie sticks, helmets, goggles, elbow pads, shoulder pads to lacrosse balls. Anything helps!

Have a great weekend with family and friends!
Douglas Murray, Principal 11/5/2021 The Week in Reflection 11/5Strength in Numbers
There is strength in numbers. There is strength when we focus on a task or goal as a unified front. It takes a village to raise a child, and it takes trust and shared goals to move anything from good to great. We have seen and experienced the strength of our community, school, students, and staff when we come together to celebrate and embrace our culture and values. On the field, stage, or classroom- we support and encourage our students to use their talents and skills to compete and perform.
Chardon is home. Chardon is our community. We are proud of where we are from and will always demonstrate our strength, and commitment to leave our school and community better than when we found it. We have experienced such a great start to the school year as noted by the countless words expressed in the Week in Reflection this year. We have experienced the greatest fall athletic season as whole this year! Our cross country runners have followed the treasured traditions of Chardon runners and surpassed personal and coach goals for the year! Luke Danison is heading to the state meet this weekend! Our volleyball team experienced their greatest season in the history of Chardon volleyball. Our Tennis, Golf, and Soccer programs all had winning seasons moving through the post season. Tonight, our football team continues their historic run in week 2 of the playoffs. With all of these victories, our students maintained a 3.16 GPA, and were involved in countless service opportunities. With all of these victories, we have taken a lot of time to work through routines, traditions, and expectations with our students. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, our continued focus on leading students to be prepared for any barrier they may face takes all of us: Families, Friends, and Faculty. Let's all take time this weekend to remind our children how much we love them, support them, and care for their well-being. In the same tone, I will be first to say how much I care for the countless sacrifices that our teachers and staff members provide for our students. Our strength comes from the smile, respect, and positivity that we experience with moving our students throughout their high school experience. Together, we remain strong. Let's climb this mountain together as Hilltoppers! Schedule for Next Week: November 8-12

MCORE Heart Screening at CHS 2/1/22
We wanted to make you aware of a valuable opportunity being provided to our community. The MCORE Foundation will be providing education and a preventative cardiac screening program for our students.
The goal is to educate parents and students on sudden cardiac arrest, family history, signs, and symptoms along with a screening to find underlying heart abnormalities. Every year in our country over 400,000 people die from sudden cardiac arrest and 13,000 of them are healthy children. This program will provide each participant a baseline cardiac evaluation for $79 that can be used with your medical provider. The first screening day will be Tuesday, February 1, 2021 from 8:00PM- 4:00PM, at Chardon High School. Please click on the following link to reserve your child’s spot today. https://mcorefoundation.org/scheduler_schedule/?school=162 If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the MCORE Foundation at info@mcorefoundation.org Girl Scout Gold Award: Makenna Ricketts![]()
