12/9/2022 The Week in Reflection: 12/9Opening "Reflection"
When you look in the mirror--what do you see? What do you feel? What do you hear?
A reflection is a mirror image of what we see on the exterior. When we look at ourselves we often see ourselves as other people describe us. Mirrors can be tricky in reflecting the mirage of another person's words. The world can be a cold place when we look in the mirror. But, does it have to be? Should it be? A mirror should reflect the beauty of our creation, our words, and our feelings. Everyone is beautiful. Everyone has value, and everyone has worth. It is up to each of us to reflect this into our own mind's eye in order to change our world, our perspective, and our outcomes--and in doing so, we change another person's world. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. That kindness lives in each of us. This time of year can be difficult for many of our students and families. Take a moment to look in the mirror to see the beauty of YOU, the beauty of your smile, the beauty of your presence, and the beauty of your impact on so many. BeYOUtiful! Jeremy's Kids 2022
This year AC4P, and Interact are raising funds for the annual Jeremy's Kids Christmas fundraiser. This fundraiser is in memory of Jeremy Mizen, the 6-year-old son of teacher Rob Mizen, who died in a car crash on Christmas Eve in 1999. Instead of dwelling on their horrible loss and having this tragic event destroy their lives, Mr. Mizen and his wife decided that they would instead celebrate Jeremy’s life focusing on the positive aspects of his life.
AC4P, NHS, Interact, and the Actively Caring Leadership class will use the raised funds to support less fortunate families in the Chardon Community. Many local families are struggling financially with giving their children gifts on Christmas. Every year the students of Chardon High School have joined together with the community to make sure relief was available to these families. As a follow up the the event that Sydney Murray and Faith Kilfoyle organized--The 2022 Holiday Craft Show was a huge success! Sydney and Faith were able to raise nearly $1,200 in donations from the show and the vendors were very successful! Thank you for all those who participated and came to the day. We will make this an annual event at Chardon High School! Thank you for your generosity. Topper Bistro Lunch MenuArt Piece of the WeekImages of the WeekCore Values in Action
The last few weeks on Wednesday mornings for late start, Jared Pike, Mackenzie Siko and Natalie Varmette gave up their time to go into the 5th grade band to volunteer their time and talents. They have been helping the students learn their instruments. Tonight at the 5th grade band concert, they were thanked by Mrs. Michelle Watson for all their help.
AFS Presentations: Navya and Juan
This week our two AFS students, Juan and Navya, came to present to all of Mrs. Korenke’s Spanish classes about Argentina and India. The Spanish classes were captivated by learning about geography, sports, food, school, and cultural customs. Of course, our CHS kids had some GREAT questions about Argentine and Indian culture and everyone learned a lot! Thanks Juan and Navya!! Great job!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at ed.klein@chardonschools.org. The Finish Line
The finish line for the semester is quickly approaching. It is quite amazing to reflect on how fast the second quarter came to closure. December 21st marks the midpoint of the year...how have you used the time that you were given? We had such a strong start to the year across each grade level! Take the proper time that you need to talk to your children about where they are socially, emotionally, and academically. This time of year is experienced differently by all students and families. As much as academic achievement is important--so is the well-being of all of our children. Our students know that they have excellent educators that care for their every need, but the extension of school is secondary to the root of the needs that children need at home. As much as we ask our children to be present at school while at school...it is just as important for each of us as parents to be present while our children are present. The one variable that we cannot change is time. Take the time this weekend to be present to all of the variables of your children and remind them how much you support and love them.
Have a warm and beautiful weekend with your family and friends!
Douglas Murray, Principal 12/8/2022 The Week in Reflection: 12/16Choices as we close out a semester![]() One of the most important aspects of life is making decisions each day in and out of school. Every choice that we decide can impact our lives either in a good or in a bad way, it helps shapes us to identify who we are to ourselves and to other people Next week, we are entering our midterm and final schedules for the semester. The choices that we make to work intentionally on our work has and will continue to give us confidence and demonstrate our marks at the end of the quarter. Working on our relationships, being kind, and being honest continues to define our character. Furthermore, taking the time to prepare and finish strong this quarter will allow us to go into next week feeling confident in our ability. Not all choices and consequences lead us astray. These choices that we face refine us to grow and mature into the person we long to become. Allow every detail today to help you shape your attitude, effort, and approach to your life. Make the choice this weekend to express gratitude, appreciation, love, and take time to review for the upcoming midterms and finals. While there the students got a tour of the building and daily operations. The students jumped in to pack warming bags for the homeless, organize the store, hang drywall, wrap presents and decorate for the holiday drive for the homeless. The eighth graders also learned about the outreach that goes on at Sub Zero to help the homeless in five states. It was a great day and a great way for our leadership group to give back to the community. Model United Nations UpdatesThe CHS Model United Nations team has been actively engaged in solving our world's most pressing problems. We have participated in two conferences both hosted by the Cleveland Council on World Affairs. Unfortunately for the 18 delegates a snow day hampered their first day of the Fall Conference in November but they performed strongly the second day. On December 7-8th, Skylar Duval-Lewis, CJ Goodrich, Alexis Jahnke, Faith Kilfoyle, Sydney Murray & Teagan Sprague attended the Winter Conference. Alexis Jahnke & CJ Goodrich received an Honorable Mention Award for their performance representing Hungary in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The next competition will be the Cleveland International Model United Nations Conference held at St. Edward's HS in February. Congratulations to all of our MUNers! NHSThe annual NHS Caroling for Cans was a huge success. Thanks to our amazing students and residents in the Woods of Burlington. Hundreds of cans of good and donations will be delivered to the Geauga Hunger Taskforce. Ribbon CuttingThe Chardon High School ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Monday, December 12. This extraordinary evening culminated with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house. Our top core value is Community at CHS. Our community were invited to see the state of the art facility that was renovated due to the overwhelming donations from SO many people. Our kids are so grateful for this awesome classroom for our athletes! Art Piece of the WeekAFS Intercultural Program Award: Chardon High SchoolThe following message was sent to us from AFS: AFS Intercultural Programs is celebrating our 75th year of international student exchange. Your staff and school community have been - and still are - a vital part of our AFS story as we strive to make the world more just and peaceful. Heartwarming stories about schools like yours, as we received from local AFS Volunteers Valerie Tommasone and Barbara Plishka, are just one part of why we want to recognize your school. Regarding Chardon High School’s long-standing relationship with AFS, Valerie and Barbara shared with us that they are appreciative of the school’s strong, ongoing partnership with AFS. They wrote: “Chardon High School has been active with AFS since 1967. Chardon regularly hosts multiple AFS students and promotes intercultural awareness within their school. Teacher Esther Neuman, has organized events for AFS students such as Halloween parties, and invited other local schools as well. One of our volunteers went through the yearbooks to find additional information: I found that Chardon High School has hosted more than 154 students in the school years from 1966-67 to 2022-23, 56 years.” On behalf of the entire AFS global community – thank you! Your school is helping us reach our vision that every student and educator can become a global citizen when schools partner with AFS-USA, and we look forward to continuing our story and partnership together in the years to come. Ski /Snowboard Club 2023Pending board action on Monday, The CHS Ski/Snowboard Club is heading to some cool slopes this winter! Does your son/daughter want to join the fun? Are you looking for a last minute Christmas present for your son or daughter? There are four separate day trips planned - three Saturdays at Peek ’n Peak Ski Resort in New York and one Saturday at Holiday Valley Ski Resort. Each trip is open to all students at the high school (grades 8-12). Students can select to participate in just one trip, two ski trips, or all four ski trips… whatever is right for the student. And students do NOT have to already know how to ski/snowboard to participate. There are options for students to get lessons during every trip, so this could be a great opportunity for students to learn the sport! If your son/daughter is interested please see the attached flier for more details, including dates, pricing options, and an overview of the itinerary for the day. Space for this opportunity is limited to just one bus, so please make sure your son/daughter turns in his/her registration to Miss Fisher as soon as possible! If you have any questions, please email Alison Fisher at alison.fisher@chardonschools.org or contact her at 285-4057 (x 1718). Closing ReflectionLooking back at the myriad of words that have been recorded this semester in this weekly blog- it is easy to see the volume of amazing students that have walked the halls, fields, and unique learning environments this semester. Coming into this school year, we had so many opportunities to build off the legacy here at CHS. The students and staff have responded with dignity, and perseverance throughout a semester filled with extraordinary accomplishments. This is a perfect time of year for everyone at CHS to recharge and refocus on the simple things in life. As we transition into 2023, remind yourself of how precious time is and the people that are in your inner circle. Take time for you...and spend time with your families. As I have shared before, Robert Frost has played a significant role in authoring the numerous decisions that I have made in my life. His writings, along with other writers- fictional, philosophical, and sacred have inspired me to find my purpose. As we close a new year, consider the hills and valleys that you have faced along with your decisions along the way. The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference As I have shared with every student, staff, and parent that I have talked to over the years---we all have a story. It is through this story that we find ourselves and live with a defined purpose. Finding our call in life has no timeline or playbook. The more we open our eyes to the beauty in us, around us, and beyond us- the more we define who we are. Parents: Cherish these moments that you have with your children. The days come and passed so quickly as you have watched your children grow. These years of high school are pivotal in the maturation of your children. Often, you may wonder, do they hear me? Do they know that I care? The answer is complicated and simple...yes. Your children hear you, need you, and love you...even when they make decisions that ask the question if they ever have heard a word that you have shared. Remember, you were in their shoes. The lines of communication are always open- and when you dial them with your love--they will hear. Students: The last four months have gone by so quickly. It doesn't matter what grade level that you are in---you have faced a lot of choices. What I love about high school is the diversity of experiences that you face throughout your years. Whether you are an eighth grader walking the halls for the first time, or you just were accepted into college--these years draw into deep memories. Cherish today, for tomorrow is never granted. Live for the simple moments in life. Unplug from data and plug into real communication with your friends and family. A snapchat message will always be there waiting; never bypass a simple embrace, hello, or opportunity to give of yourself. Staff: One of the most overlook careers in the world is the one that creates careers. Being a teacher is a sacrifice, a gift, and often a thankless job. We appreciate the gifts that our teachers provide each day at Chardon High School. We have tremendous educators that not only live their content--they teach about living. Thank you for all that you do to train the future leaders--today. As we transition into a new year, my wish for you is that of continued, hope, joy, and happiness. Enjoy this time with family and friends. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and have a joyous New Year! Closing Message : A message for our students

This is an email that I sent to all students this week.
We are rounding another milestone of the school year. We just have a few regular school weeks left before we head into the midterm schedule. I have spent much of the last two days working with students. One of the experiences that I enjoy is counseling and giving advice to students. More recently, it has been all that I have been doing. Rightfully so, we have all needed some words of encouragement over the last 14 days.
With all of the emotions that we face as students (and staff) outside of the hours of the school day, we often see you and greet you when you are most tired, and lethargic at 7:15 am. Let's be real, mornings are tough for most of us and we are all feeling stressed. Even for the adults that get to school really early--we all need are internal engines to start...and we all have a story that we are bringing to school.
This time of year can impact us differently without us even knowing it. The hustle of school, activities and the holidays can catch us when we are not ready. What is really important is prioritizing the little things, writing things down, and doing what we can with the time we are given--in school, in class, and with the responsibilities that we all face.
Always know that you are surrounded by people who care for you and want you to be the most successful that you can be at CHS. It is important to seek out help from your teachers for anything: missing assignments, absences, struggle with understanding, not having the energy, or just having someone to listen to you. Your counselors, coaches, staff, and administrators will make the time to be present for your needs. You just need to ask, or have someone ask for you.
We care for you more than you can understand. Take a few moments to reflect on these words, do a little self-reflection internally, and take a deep breath.
One step at a time, one moment at a time, and one day at a time. Together, and that's the key word--TOGETHER--we will transcend as Hilltoppers.
Oftentimes, I feel that I write to just my internal self since I never know who is reading these emails. It only takes one person to make another feel better in the present moment. With that mantra in my head, I wish you a good night and an even better tomorrow. You are loved!
