9/29/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection 9/29Opening: Choose Your Response
This week was another opportunity to grow at Chardon High School. It is hard to believe that we are rounding third and heading home at the end of a quarter. We have accomplished many tasks since the start of school and we are just three weeks away from the end of the quarter. The building administration had the opportunity to begin formal observations with teachers this week. All three of us were so impressed with the depth of dialogue, engaging lessons, focus on goals, and the connections to state standards that demonstrated the data shared a few weeks ago when we discussed the star rating system of the report card.
As we spent most of our time indoors this week, we all felt the change in the air at the book ends of the day with the transition to Fall. When you reflect on our area in northeast Ohio, it can be easy to reactive to the change in seasons. Some love this time of year, some want summer to stay, and some are ready for winter. There are times where we all wish we could control the weather. The one thing that we learn over time is to prepare for, and choose our response to the weather. This transitions to my main point to the opening of the Week in Reflection---Choosing our response to the events that we face in life determines the outcomes that we face in life. Our choices are one thing that we can control. Our actions emulate our choices, and our character defines our lives. This mantra helps define our purpose. I am a big advocate of empowering students, and adults all of the time. One of the biggest questions that our children asked at an early age was "why!?" Why does this happen, Why does this do that, or Why are we going here...to a simple-- why does why, why! Asking probing questions enhances our curiosity throughout life. Many years ago, you chose Chardon as a place to live. You valued the beauty, community, safety, opportunity, and education. There are many other factors that played a role in your decision to choose Chardon Schools, and you entrust us in preparing your children for college, career, and life readiness. We are at the dawn of the first finish line. Take the time to discuss where your son(s)/daughter(s) are during the first quarter, and the ways that we can continue to support their learning. Our teachers are committed to serve, assist, and guide your children in any way possible. Make sure to reach out to them if you ever need anything. The more they know--the better that they can respond. Homecoming Success
I want to thank Brandi Giddings, Dan Chenoweth, and the members of the Executive Student Council for planning and executing a flawless Homecoming weekend.
Their attention to detail from July through yesterday morning was so well planned. We welcomed over 700 students to CHS for an incredible evening and the work they put in to make our school polished for this morning took a crew hours after they danced the night away. Extraordinary planning, and leadership!

National Merit Scholarship Program: Commended Students
Program Recognition
Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. Commended Students In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Congratulations to Timothy Meleski and Thomas Wilkinson for being recognized as commended students! Counselor's Corner

9/22/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 9/22The Beauty of Fall
The Autumnal Equinox falls on Saturday, September 23. Fall is a time that generates so much beauty in Northeast Ohio. We had such a beautiful summer, and we are longing for a wonderful fall. We have officially entered fall, and soon the wind will change and leaves will boom with color. Just as the meteorological season has quite a story...so do we.
Life is full of opportunities. These moments come and go and we have to ask ourselves --do we ever seize the opportunities? More than ever, we have to take the time to seize opportunities before they are taken away. Autumn is an opportunity to pause and reflect on all of our blessings that surround us. It an opportunity to give thanks, and it an opportunity to prepare for the "weather" whether we want to or not. How has the first full month been for you? Are you still on track for your goals? Have you built the capacity for success? Questions like this are meant to make you pause. Whether you are a parent, student, or teacher reading this---you might have to reflect on your purpose and your place in the story. Without a doubt, the last four weeks have been an adjustment for all of us with settling into the new routines of a school year. In school, we have bells to create start and end times--but the fluidity of life constantly flows for parents, teachers, and students. I have lived inside of bells my whole life- but, what matters most to my story is how I spend my time between the bells; more importantly, how I spend my time with the priorities that I have established. Time is inevitable- how we use it matters so much in every quarter--especially the first quarter. Students, many of you are on point. You have adapted and created new habits along the way. Take this Autumn to refine, re-fuel and re-set timelines and priorities toward those areas in your life that are not only strengths but also your weaknesses. Make the time to refine one area of your life that you want to be more successful in...the quarter ends next month. Look in the mirror and see your beauty and share your gifts in and out of the classroom. Live your Purpose! Parents, you sacrifice so much for your children. As they grow older, many of them develop both a natural and unnatural independence. Take this Autumn to remind your children of their self-worth, and your unconditional love for them. They need you more than ever in this everchanging world. Teachers, you are the extensions of the family. You spend so much time with students helping them along their journey. Take this Autumn to build your self-efficacy. Many times more than not, you are the catalyst that can change a child's world. Keep up your great work and take time for yourself! WE APPRECIATE YOU! Financial Aid Night/FAFSA night
A plan to simplify the FAFSA has been years in the making since 2020 when the Consolidated Appropriations Act was passed to streamline the process. Those changes are finally going into effect. For the 2024-2025 school year, the FAFSA filing season will open in December, two months later than in previous years. (The Education Department said it plans to return to an Oct. 1 start date next year.) Because of these changes, Chardon's Financial Aid/FAFSA will not be scheduled until December 2023. When the release date for the new FAFSA has been confirmed, this date will be advertised and shared with parents and students. What's new about the College Financial Aid Process
Chardon HS will be attending the NEOCCF College and Career Fair on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Kent Campus of Kent State University in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MACC). Representatives from approximately 100 colleges and universities, as well as career preparatory organizations, are expected to attend.
Students will be departing Chardon by bus at 8:00 am and will return around 2:00 pm. The cost of the trip is $15 to be paid prior to the day of the event. Students and chaperones will attend the college fair, tour the Kent campus, and have lunch in one of the dining halls on campus. Please use this form to sign up. All payments need to be made to Mrs. Koehler (the lady in the window). Douglas Murray, Principal 9/15/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 9/15What's Our Why
For almost eleven years, I have served on the administrative team in Chardon. I love every second of what I do at Chardon High School and I am deeply humbled at the direction we are moving. Every day is a new experience for us with 1,125 students and 80 staff members in the building and a new day to get better and be better. The focus on our mission is the heart of our daily decisions through a lens of our core values. We have accomplished so many extraordinary tasks that build upon and refine the treasured traditions and outcomes of being a graduate of Chardon High School. The image above is a reference to our why, our how, and what we do to accomplish our goals to assist every student to their individual purpose.
Working each day with a compass and a purpose drives the standards that we teach and the climate that we create at Chardon. We have something special here...and it didn't happen by chance nor are we going to lose it. We are a family, and a community of learners. Leadership is organic. Leadership is intentional, shared, and reciprocal. The teachers work so well together and the students share in the construction of their learning. It is hard work that truly prepares students for the 4E's that we preach: Employment, Enrollment, Enlistment, and Entrepreneurship. Teaching is my passion. My purpose is to serve and inspire others to find theirs in any capacity that I can encounter students and staff. Our teachers encapsulate so many roles each day. They are not only licensed educators--they are counselors, caretakers, facilitators, leaders, guides, planners, collaborators, statisticians, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters; a vessel of knowledge and experiences who serve and are often underappreciated. As Walt Whitman wrote, "Happiness, not in another place but this place...not for another hour, but this hour." Living for today and preparing for tomorrow allows us to seize today's goals and plan for tomorrow's outcomes. It takes many hands to make this work every single day. Just yesterday, the state of Ohio released the 5 Star Report ratings. We are very proud of the intentional work that our teachers and students put forth into our core value focus of Achievement! There is ton to unpack inside of this report; Dr. Hanlon and Dr. Klein will certainly continue to share our achievements from last year and our continued focus of our mission of High Achievement for All students in presentations to the board and community. In summary, the work of our teachers at Chardon High School and in the district was top tier! Like any good educator, coach, or parent would share--- stay the course and continue to refine areas that will make us better...and that is our goal. With our district mission, vision, and building values--we will do that while continuing to emphasize on educating the whole student and building strong relationships! In the noisy world that we live in, it is important to celebrate these victories, refine areas of identified growth, and accomplish the goals that we set forth without being swayed by the noise. When we collectively work together on our mission, values, and vision--we create the outcomes we all desire. Let's continue to stay focused on our purpose and the outcomes will be many to our shared goals. Congratulations, CHS and all of our schools! Let's keep climbing! 2023-2024 School Profile
What we like to share when the state report card comes out is our school profile that compliments the areas that aren't directly measured in the reporting system. This school profile will provide you more data in the areas of our whole story beyond the measures of an end of course exam.
State of the Schools Presentation
On Wednesday, September 13, Chardon High School hosted the annual State of the Schools presentation in collaboration with the Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce. As the host of this event, CHS administrators were so moved by the exceptional leadership of our students and staff members who share all of the ways that we connect our students to the 4E's: Enrollment, Employment, Enlistment, Entrepreneurship. We are so appreciative of all the staff members and student representatives that highlighted all of the great work happening at Chardon Schools!

Douglas Murray, Principal 9/8/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 9/8Opening GratitudeI want to open this Week in Reflection with gratitude. The world in which we live in can feel disconnected, and torn at times. We can become very reactive to moments and situations each day we encounter. In a world of constant contact and pressure lives our kids who spend a third of their day with adults and peers. Our students are great, and our staff love working with your children. It is hard to reflect upon the passion, compassion, and time placed in class, and student activities...being at school from sun up to sun down allows me a comprehensive view of the lives of our students and the adults they work with. It is all about connections. It is all about trust, and it is all about generational community values and kindness. It was awesome seeing so many families over the week at school events, and at the Geauga County Fair last weekend. We all cherish the small moments that we have with our families. Making memories is so important with the time we have with our children. This Week in Reflection is packed with tons of things our students encountered over Labor Day weekend along with preparing for the week to come. Geauga County FairEarlier in the week, I asked students to share some of the awesome events, competitions, and experiences they participated in during the 200th Geauga County Fair. We have a ton of students involved in Fair Boards, 4H, and skill competitions. It was amazing walking around to see all of the great things our students participated in. Enclosed are some images that were shared with me. The recognition and awards they received were many! We are so proud of them! Enclosed are a few examples of the accomplishments of our students. Counselor's CornerFinancial Aid Night/FAFSA night A plan to simplify the FAFSA has been years in the making since 2020 when the Consolidated Appropriations Act was passed to streamline the process. Remind Directions: Mobile Device Notifications from Mr. MurrayVisionThe mighty eagle is quite striking to see soaring. Their presence, eyes, and awareness makes them an indelible part of our country. Monday is a day where we pause and reflect on patriotism. The last several years have been very trying for all of us. Through good and difficult times we must look to the sky and see the eagle soaring and be reminded of its vision, courage, and perseverance. It is hard to even fathom that over a generation of learners have crossed the halls across of our nation never fully experiencing our response as a country to the events of September 11, 2001. Most of us can recall where we were, and who was around us that day. As you come together this weekend with your family and friends-remember, recall, and embrace the little things in front of you...for they matter the most- family. Have a beautiful weekend with your family and friends! Douglas Murray, Principal 9/1/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection 9/1Valuing Hard Work Work is one of the greatest ways that we can give back to our community, state, country, and the world. What we do can be looked through various lenses. Regardless of our perspective, our work matters. This Monday we take time to pause our 'work' as a simple reminder of the value of our contributions. More importantly, Labor Day is an opportunity to spend quality time with our family We have seen some very abnormal weather in the last week, but soon we will see the change of scenery and be reminded how short summer is in Northeast Ohio. Yet, for most people in Chardon, we become acclimated to the upcoming season and shortened days. We remember that this is nature's way of nurturing itself after a long year. This is a perfect time for each of us to remember the simple things in life: Faith, Family, and Friends. For many people in Chardon, these reminders come in all shapes and sizes. They emulate stories, memories, and a reminder of how short our time can be with people. Faith can remind us of our own humanity, or even trusting another person. Having faith gives us a sense of hope and optimism in demonstrating our dignity to all people. The new season can provide us the opportunity to rekindle our belief and hope in humanity by the actions and responses that we demonstrate to others. Family is the root of our own autonomy. Growing up, we depend so much on our own parents/guardians and relatives to nurture and guide us through good and bad times. As we get older, we begin to develop independence from our family and we begin to gain--and sometimes-- lose their trust. CHS students aren't immune to these changes. We value that every student has their own story, values, and routines ---but what is essential is that our children take the time to recognize the importance of how family time allows for their independence to guide their choices and behaviors. Friends are essential to our development regardless of our age. We value the beauty of authentic communication that allows us to grow in our abilities in and out of school. Technology is a wonderful tool that allows us to communicate. It can become a double-edged sword in our ability to develop meaningful and long lasting relationships. Sending a quick message may suffice for a moment, but what interconnects us as humans is our ability to talk, share, and think in meaningful discussions. Transitioning to school life: Faith, Family, and Friends can connect us to a bigger story; a community. I am proud to see how our community has grown and transformed our values into something bigger than words on paper. As we quickly move into this new season, seize the opportunities to spend more time with the simple things in life...because we all are experiencing how life goes in the fast-lane. Be You, Be Kind, Be the reason someone smiles today. Activities Fair OpportunitiesStudents who are involved with the many clubs and activities at CHS were available during the lunch periods on Wednesday. We are grateful of the time that our student ambassadors and staff took to intentionally plan this experience for students to find opportunities to participate in. Images of the Week: ELAMrs. Kolcum took her students in English II back to their childhood by having them use sidewalk chalk to illustrate a quote from an author they'll be reading this year. It was a great way to take advantage of the warm weather and introduce this year's literature. There were some budding artists in the group! | We are also very proud of Jordan Higham this week! Jordan's neighborhood was significantly impacted by the catastrophic weather last Thursday night. His family and neighbors woke up to significant tree damage in the entire neighborhood after a EF-1 Tornado formed just west of his road leaving a huge trail of debris. After the notice of the calamity day, Jordan spent his Friday assisting his neighbors! Way to #TopperUp, Jordan! |
