8/30/2022 The Week in Reflection: 9/2Valuing Hard Work
Work is one of the greatest ways that we can give back to our community, state, country, and the world. What we do can be looked through various lenses. Regardless of our perspective, our work matters. This Monday we take time to pause our 'work' as a simple reminder of the value of our contributions. More importantly, Labor Day is an opportunity to spend quality time with our family.
It has been warm lately, but soon we will see the change of scenery and be reminded how short summer is in Northeast Ohio. Yet, for most people in Chardon, we become acclimated to the upcoming season and shortened days. We remember that this is nature's way of nurturing itself after a long year. After the last year and a half, we could all appreciate a change in scenery. This is a perfect time for each of us to remember the simple things in life: Faith, Family, and Friends. For many people in Chardon, these reminders come in all shapes and sizes. They emulate stories, memories, and a reminder of how short our time can be with people. Faith can remind us of our own humanity, or even trusting another person. Having faith gives us a sense of hope and optimism in demonstrating our dignity to all people. The new season can provide us the opportunity to rekindle our belief and hope in humanity by the actions and responses that we demonstrate to others. Family is the root of our own autonomy. Growing up, we depend so much on our own parents and relatives to nurture and guide us through good and bad times. As we get older, we begin to develop independence from our family and we begin to gain--and sometimes-- lose their trust. CHS students aren't immune to these changes. We value that every student has their own story, values, and routines ---but what is essential is that our children take the time to recognize the importance of how family time allows for their independence to guide their choices and behaviors. Friends are essential to our development regardless of our age. We value the beauty of authentic communication that allows us to grow in our abilities in and out of school. Technology is a wonderful tool that allows us to communicate. It can become a double-edged sword in our ability to develop meaningful and long lasting relationships. Sending a quick message may suffice for a moment, but what interconnects us as humans is our ability to talk, share, and think in meaningful discussions. Transitioning to school life: Faith, Family, and Friends can connect us to a bigger story; a community. I am proud to see how our community has grown and transformed our values into something bigger than words on paper. As we quickly move into this new season, seize the opportunities to spend more time with the simple things in life...because we all are experiencing how life goes in the fast-lane. Be You, Be Kind, Be the reason someone smiles today. The Schedule for Next Week

AP Environmental Science participated in a Biome Gallery walk. The goal of this project is for students to describe the global distribution and principal environmental aspects of terrestrial and aquatic biomes. In teams of two, students created posters that included features of the biomes such as climate, location, biodiversity, organismal interactions and human impacts. Students then utilized these posters to document the main features of the earth's biomes.

Honors Biology class began the Bubble survivorship lab. This lab not only allows the students to review the steps of the scientific method, but it is also an opportunity for them to examine the relationship between parental care and organismal survivorship. Students will analyze the data using statistical formulas and graphing and determine whether or not their hypotheses were supported.

Douglas Murray, Principal 8/22/2022 The Week in Reflection: 8/26A Week of Capturing Memories
The beginning of the school year is always filled with activities such as orientations, class meetings, navigating new routes, classes...all to set up the new normal. Can you believe that we are concluding week two already!? There are so many amazing things that our staff and students were accomplishing this week towards the mission of our school district committing to high achievement for all students.
If you are unaware of this blog called the Week in Reflection, the purpose of this communication is to share with everyone all the work happening at CHS each week from a principal's perspective. This newsletter is a very therapeutic (and time-consuming) reflection of all the things that I see each week. You will see photographs, short reflections, opportunities, and event information. I am not an author. I am just a simple man that loves what I do...I love kids and want to help each child find their purpose. In this Week in Reflection, you will read and see so many wonderful opportunities and experiences that show the engagement of our students and staff within our mission. The week was filled with teachers and students expanding their knowledge as they began to dig deeper into the standards in each course. It was a warm week, but certainly beautiful. Take a few moments to peruse all of the great things happening at CHS. The Schedule for Next Week: 4 Day Week With Adjusted Block
Monday and Tuesday will be regular White Days
*On Wednesday, August 31, students in Algebra I, Math 8, ELA I, ELA 8, and the Fundamentals of Algebra class will report to school at 7:35 AM to take their first round of MAP data testing. School will begin at 10:13 AM for students not taking these tests. Thursday is an adjusted schedule to allow for PLC's. 1st Period begins at 9:04 AM. Students should still arrive before 8:55 AM to reduce congestion on Maple Avenue. Friday: No School Transportation Procedures
Chardon High School
For students at Chardon High School (grades 8-12) being dropped off and/or picked up, the procedures have adjusted with the two-tier transportation model for the district. Parents dropping-off/picking-up at Chardon High School enter the school campus via Maple Avenue, drive in front of the high school, and exit via Memorial Drive onto Chardon Avenue. Students at Chardon High School (grades 8-12) riding the school bus will enter the school building through the main school entrance beginning at 7:15 AM. School buses will be staged for students in the afternoon in front of the high school, on Memorial Drive, and in the Alcan; and will exit the campus both via North Street and Memorial Drive. Important note for students dropping off middle school siblings: Student drivers may drop off using the front of the middle school at 7:10 AM. Students will then head north towards Canfield to enter the student parking lot. All Parents/Guardians Please be mindful of the following afternoon directions:

AP Physics C performed their final Barbie Bungee drops off the back of the student bleachers. The goal of this activity is data extrapolation. Students had to determine from their initial drops of 1.5 M and below how many rubber bands it would take for Barbie to have a thrilling bungie ride but not impact the ground from 5.37 meters. The group with the closest drop to the ground was declared the winner!

The Week in Reflection: 8/19
What a beautiful time to be a Hilltopper!
Looking back at this week, it is hard to recall when it started and when it ended. The day turned into night in a blink of an eye each day. On Monday, we welcomed back our staff. Seeing their faces and feeling the energy was truly a moment to stop and reflect. Our staff were so glad to see each other and rekindle the time they were away from each other in person.
I cannot tell you how much I love opening day. The students were exactly like our staff. Hugging each other, excited, and even a little anxious with the feeling that we all get when we start a new year. Inside of months of planning, the operation pushed play. I was moved by the leadership of our upperclassmen guiding students who felt lost. It was at that moment, that I felt the rush of why we do what we do.
We love our kids, our community, and our purpose is open the door to learning, thinking, and serving. Without a doubt, the beginning of the year always can provide each of us ways to refine--but, our staff was absolutely jumping in. The bell rang and the halls where clear.
I am so proud of our staff, and our students. They are leaders and understand our purpose.
Purpose: It is a word that I say from time to time. It allows reflection, action, and a depth of questioning. We all have a purpose, and we are helping kids along their journey to find their purpose. Likewise, collectively as a school, we have a shared purpose in or mission, vision, and core values.
The short week that we had was good practice to the routines that we will model next week as we enter a full week. In this edition of the shortened Week in Reflection, some of the topics are good to review inside of the Family Reference Guide to prepare for as we enter next week. The video enclosed will give a brief highlight of the week and the upcoming full week.

We live in a beautiful community with extraordinary people. A community is built by the foundation of humble hands and the passion of hardworking men and women. Chardon is such a wonderful place to raise a family. Our school becomes an extension of your family with all of the learning and activities that our children get involved in. The foundation that we share is our shared community values.
I am beginning my 10th year as an administrator in Chardon. I have to tell you that the most enriching experience that I connect with each day is the students that walk into my office to check-in. When you walk into my office you will notice a book that students sign as guests for the day. My little autograph book is a beacon of conversation for students and guests (of course, so is the Bob Ross coloring book). Nearly 25 years ago you would have never caught me going to the principal’s office to say hello or chat about what was going on in my day.
Over the course of the last decade, the stigma of the office has turned into an opportunity for each of the administrators to build relationships with our students. When we say that we love our kids--we truly mean it. They energize us to be more and to give more. They allow us to live our core values more when we are visible to our students and staff.
The culture of our school lives within our connection with our students and staff, and we celebrate the many ways that we grow as a community. It is important to note that we are truly living in historical times in Chardon. After going back-to-back in winning football championships, our baseball team battled to be champs to end the school year. Three championships! Most people spend an entire career chasing one, and Chardon just accomplished three in less than eighteen months! This championship culture energizes all of us in all that we do as students, athletes, educators, and community members.
As we draw connections to our history-making year, we are celebrating the 150th commencement this year with our seniors. These seniors came to us as eighth graders! They will be a record-breaking class with earning the most class credits, the most graduation seals, the most service hours achieved, the most college credits earned, and the most accolades ever in athletics. It is going to be an extraordinary year!
Everything is so ripe for our community to refine our core values and live our mission of high achievement for all students with a renewed emphasis on learning. This season is prime for traditions to bloom all over this campus with student activities, personal relationships, personalized learning, and a commitment to renewing our mission, vision, and values.
We are excited to welcome the following Hilltoppers to our school family in the following positions:
Ms. Mary Pat Pavicic, Assistant Principal
Mr. Jason Hall, Engineer Teacher
Ms. Sarah Durk, English Teacher
Mr. David Massucci, English Teacher
Ms. Kayla O’Brien, Health Teacher (.2 CHS/ .8 CMS)
Mr. John Cameron Niehus, Cafeteria/Study Hall Monitor

Chardon High School (grades 8-12) traditionally does not issue school supply lists prior to the start of the school year. Some 8-12 classes will not have a specific list of required items. For those classes that do, students will receive teacher-specific supply lists during class time during the first week of school. All CHS students are asked to come prepared for the first day of school with basic items e.g. writing utensils, notebook, etc.
