Dear Families:

Over the last six weeks, our world has paused. Everything that we knew, experienced, and prepared for has felt frozen in time. Every corner of industry and every person connected to it (directly and indirectly) had to learn how to operate life with new boundaries.

Educators across the world shifted gears from integrating technology to 100% deploying technology to every learner. Connectivity is not reserved solely to the internet. We live with personal connection.  I am very proud of our staff and students for all of their efforts, creativity, and energy throughout this very difficult time. Likewise, I am forever grateful to all of our parents and students who became roommates again.

Mother nature has more power than we can even imagine. It seems as though she has asked us to pause and nurture each other---even asking us to change our response to the busyness of life. I know that when each of us are able to reconnect in person we will celebrate our relationships more than we ever have before.

We are entering the final phase of the fourth quarter which will continue online. Please use this reference guide to help you navigate through the finish line.

We will continue to model the schedule that we shared from the beginning of this virtual learning experience. Please see the details below.

Spring Sports:

The Ohio High School Athletic Association informed member schools Monday, April 20, that spring sports are now cancelled, as Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced earlier in the day that school facilities will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year due to the coronavirus COVID-19.

OHSAA Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass sent the memo to school administrators following Governor DeWine’s press conference. For weeks, the OHSAA has communicated with schools that spring sports would be canceled if school facilities were closed. In addition to facilities not being opened, it would be impossible to ensure the health and safety of all individuals and support personnel involved in practices and contests at all member schools.

“As we have stated in our previous communications, today’s announcement by Governor DeWine to close schools for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year also will now result in the cancellation of OHSAA-sponsored spring sports seasons including tournaments,” Snodgrass wrote Monday.

The OHSAA’s mandatory no-contact period for all interscholastic sports remained in effect until at least May 3, which could be extended. Coaches and school administrators are encouraged to have non-mandatory electronic and online communications with their student-athletes. The closure of school facilities includes all athletic facilities for any interscholastic training, practice or competition.

As the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) announced earlier this week, the 2020 spring sports season has been cancelled in response to Governor DeWine's order for school buildings to remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year. We understand the disappointment that this brings for all, most especially student athletes, families, and coaches, and our thoughts are with all.

Winter Sports Awards

Mr. Snyder and I will begin communicating to coaches who were unable to facilitate a winter sports awards event regarding delivering an alternate model of meeting virtually. All winter awards will be distributed to students upon our return to school. Seniors will receive their awards before the end of the year.

Spring Sports Awards

Following Gov. DeWine’s announcement on Monday, April 20 that all K-12 schools in Ohio will finish the 2019-20 school year remotely, the Ohio High School Athletic Association cancelled the 2020 spring sports season.  While this may have been anticipated, the finality of the official announcement brings a sense of loss to our Hilltopper athletes, coaches and parents. We want to acknowledge the work, dedication and contributions our spring sport athletes and coaches have made to Chardon High School.  As such, the following awards will be distributed to spring sport athletes:

  • All spring sport athletes will receive a varsity letter
  • Returning Varsity Letter Winners will receive next level varsity award (2-year letter winners receive 3rd year letter, etc)
  • All spring sport seniors will receive a 2020 Hilltopper Award

More information on award distribution will come as we get nearer the end of the school year.

Spring Musical:

On March 11th, the Spring Musical - Mamma Mia! - was POSTPONED. Rescheduling this event is contingent on when we can return to social gatherings. If/When we are cleared to re-acclimate socially, we will make a decision (in consultation with the directors) how the musical will be delivered.

AP Tests:
The College Board has developed secure, online free-response exams for each course.
For additional details regarding this year’s AP exams, see our FAQ page.
AP Exam Features:
AP exams will only include topics and skills most AP teachers and students have already covered in class by early March. Like many college-level exams, this year’s AP Exams will be open book/open note. Get tips for taking open book/open note exams.

Students will be able to take exams on any device they have access to—computer, tablet, or smartphone. They will be able to either type and upload their responses or write responses by hand and submit a photo via their cell phone.

The College Board recognizes that some students may not have access to the tools and connectivity they need to review AP content online and take the exam. If students need mobile tools or connectivity, they can reach out to the College Board directly to let us know (en español).

AP Exam Timing:
  • Exams will be given from May 11 through May 22.
    • Students are expected to test during this window unless there are extenuating circumstances. Students who require testing during the make-up exam schedule need to contact the AP Coordinator, Mr. Hurlbut.
  • Make-up test dates will be available for each subject from June 1 through June 5.
  • Subject-specific exam times and tasks are available below. Each subject’s exam will be taken on the same day at the same time, worldwide.
AP Exam Schedule

Final Exams:

For the 2019-2020 school year, we will not be administering final exams at Chardon High School.

Grading/ Final Grades:

The 4th Quarter “Virtual Academy” will be evaluated with traditional grades. Teachers have been working with the administration to evaluate student work fairly, timely, and accurately. Please speak to your teachers directly regarding this format. For the 2019-2020 school year, final grades for the class will be based on 4 grading periods without a final.  All semester grades will be based on 2 grading periods without a final.

Concerts/Field Trips/ State Testing

All of the scheduled events for the duration of our school year are canceled at this time. We are asking if it is possible for our music and band directors for the possibility to record sessions to promote these programs and experiences.

Chromebook Collection/Locker Clean-out

We are mindful of all of these important tasks- but do not have a schedule or plan during this mandated “stay home” period of time. Further information will follow as we receive guidance from the Governor and our BOE.

May 18: Senior Chromebook (details to follow in the next few weeks).

Mr. Bandiera sent a survey to our students to identify what our students need are for entering the building and accessing lockers. We are working on a schedule for this to take place in a safe, secure, and expeditious manner during the first week of May. More details will follow by May 4.

Junior and Senior Prom/After Prom:
At this time, our original (5/16) has been moved to our make-up date scheduled (7/10) for prom and after-prom at the same venue (American-Croatian Lodge in Eastlake). This event is dependent on guidance from the State of Ohio, in regards to social distancing.  It is our intention to do everything that we can to provide this wonderful opportunity for our students. We will make a decision to cancel this event no later than June 24th. In the interim, Virtual Prom Live is giving students across the United States and Canada a night of wholesome fun where they can dress up and listen to top regional DJs play the best school-appropriate music.  Students are invited to tune in for contests, giveaways, and moderated chats with others in their region for this FREE virtual event. Students are able to register today, and if you have any questions, contact hello@virtualprom.live.

Important Reminder about Friday, April 3: Wellness Day Module

Friday Whole School Lesson
As our daily lives continue to change due to COVID-19 it is important to know that all of us are involved in this crisis at this time.

How we care for ourselves and others is up to us.  The most important thing we can do right now is to follow the guidelines around social distancing.

Other simple things we can do to show we care include:
  • Develop and stick to a routine
  • Eating healthy, physically getting up to move throughout the day, develop a sleep routine
  • Stay in touch with others while maintaining distance
  • Learn something new from the internet
  • Try different mindfulness activities
  • Set and track a daily or weekly goal
  • Have some technology-free time
  • Practice gratitude
  • Think before posting something
  • Accept our feelings
  • Be available for other others

Friday’s lesson is about mental wellness.  Now, more than ever, paying attention to our feelings and those of our friends and family members is important.  The lesson includes 4 interactive units with vignettes, short answers, and videos:
  • Introduction to Mental Health
    • What is mental health
    • Stress vs. unhealthy stress
  • Understanding Mental Health Disorders
    • How to show care for yourself and others
    • The role of the brain in mental health
    • 5 common mental illness impacting teens
  • Healthy Coping Skills
    • The connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
    • Coping strategies to practice
  • Seeking Help
    • Inside/Outside feelings
    • Signs you or a friend may need to talk to someone
    • What to do if you or someone you know is thinking of suicide

Where do I GO? What do I Do?

Watch a screencast to explain this module: YouTube
Google Classroom Code: gsebo7b (This takes you to the module)
In addition to the lesson, there is a CHS Student Wellness Check-In Survey that we would like you to complete. This survey is critical in helping us know how to better meet your needs.

We certainly hope that you made the best of the time during Spring Break. I know that we certainly tried to make the best of our time working on house projects, going for walks, and just embracing the simple things --together. Nothing beats being together (especially at school), and we are doing our best to streamline the complex system of high school in the most achievable way possible. As we transition back to online learning this week, we wanted to start the week off with a district-wide Spirit Week!

The high school rolled out a routine for students and staff that they were familiar with when we unraveled six months of planning and redesigned school in 48 hours.  The students will follow a schedule assigned for the day. Teachers, inside of their Google Classroom will communicate (in advance) whether the class is LIVE or a module to work on for the day. Most of our teachers choose to use Google Meet during our first week online and it went really well. Not every day will have assignments posted that are due for that day. Some classes are working on projects, essays, and unique learning assessments that will without a doubt change our creativity at CHS.

Please note that we adjusted the start time to 8:00 AM based on requests from the survey.

April 3, 2020:

This Friday, Mrs. Blackburn will post a lesson for the students to watch and participate in. This document will be sent directly to the students.

Lessons / Assignments

We will continue to accept late work without penalty, though the expectation is that teachers will not go more than 48 hours without some sort of interaction with students (a google meet, assignment submitted, blog post, etc.). Likewise, students should make contact with their teachers and logging in to stay engaged.  While assignments may be entered into Infinite Campus as “incomplete or missing”, please know this is one way of communicating with students and parents to connect within that 48-hour window. The grade will be updated when the work is submitted. We will stress with students that work from each week should be submitted no later than Sunday night so they are ready to start the next week.

Google Classroom Parent Summaries

Academic Intervention
If you are noticing your child struggling with the academic workload, getting organized or just staying motivated, please let the teachers and school counselors know.  Our educational assistants and tutors are ready to jump in and help! Students on IEPs should follow the directions of their intervention specialists.

3/18 Update

Mr. Bandiera, Mr. Higham and I were in virtual meetings all day with each other, staff, and students. It was a great way to stay connected.  Enclosed is a really important resource to help you and your family while we all navigate this new routine.

Chardon High School Tips for Navigating Time at Home

With so many rapidly changing events related to this virus, it’s important to pay attention to taking care of yourself.  Not just washing your hands (although that is really important!) but also playing attention to your overall health and wellness.

  • Here is a little tik tok reminder that  we are all in this together! https://vm.tiktok.com/pn8dts/

Tips for Managing  Time at Home:

  • Share your concerns with the adults in your world.  Adults, be sure to validate their feelings and make sure you are taking care of yourself.
  • Connect with staff and administration - we would love to hear from you.
We will be checking in with you via social media, podcasts, phone calls, email!
  • Look up factual information from reliable resources. See the list at the bottom.
  • Be mindful of how much time you are listening to information about Covid-19.
  • Maintain a routine with identified times for school, sleep, free time, work, and eating.
  • Get outside if the weather permits - this weekend is going to be sunny.
  • Social distancing does not mean social isolation. This is a time where teens can be encouraged to use their social media or phones to connect with others.
  • Unfortunately, it does not mean visiting with friends in person or doing sleepovers.  This PSA may help to explain why social distancing is so important right now.

As we experience unchartered waters in education, it is more important than ever to rely on our core values to steer us through this world pandemic.  We have been diligently working today at Chardon High School to plan meaningful and intentional online instruction for your child. To help make this process as simple as possible, we have created several resources and guides, so our students and staff can effectively and efficiently communicate remotely.  Continuing to support student learning while outside of the classroom can be a challenge, especially for those moving to remote learning for the first time. With that said, here are a few tips that will allow students and staff to thrive in this new virtual setting.

Stay Healthy and Charged … take breaks between learning to stretch, hydrate, or just unplug.
Stay Focused … find a quiet learning place with minimal distractions.
Stay Connected … keep in touch with family, friends, and teachers.

We recognize navigating this new learning model presents unique challenges that are new to everyone impacted.  However, our Hilltopper determination will elevate us through these difficult times.

Chardon High School will commence the online platform on Tuesday, March 17th beginning at 7:30 am. This will be our system test day. Students will use the [COVID-19 School Calendar]  just like they have a scheduled class period. Teachers will deliver and provide instructional material on Wednesday, March 18. Teachers will notify students how the scheduled period will be used each day. Some may have live sessions, some may post lessons/ content; however, your teacher will be available for your needs during the specified periods.

To access each CHS teacher’s framework of online delivery models, please go to the google sheet-  CHS ... 2019-2020 ... FACULTY COURSES / RESOURCES.

Please be mindful that millions of users across the world will be online. Students may experience service delays, lagging videos, and disconnections. We are well aware of this concern. Please be patient and know that these delays might be outside of Chardon Schools jurisdiction.

We love your children and will do everything in our capacity to their social emotional learning needs throughout this time away from school.

This document will be our main resource guide throughout the duration of the Governor Dewine’s mandate. Please check it frequently, and know that all building level communications will come from the CHS Administration.

The Week in Reflection: 3/13

District Response to Coronavirus COVID-19

The Week in Reflection could be summed up as this...meetings and communications to best prepare our staff, students, and families with the global, national, and local responses to COVID-19. It is important to take precautions to any virus by taking care of yourself, modeling proper hand washing techniques, and limiting exposure.  Many of the decisions that schools are making are being directed at the highest level of federal, state, and local agencies. Chardon has been working to best prepare our community stakeholders with communications, preparation, and remaining calm in our correspondences. Enclosed are several important communications that we have shared with parents and staff.

A Message from the State Superintendent

A Message from Gov. Dewine

Picture

CHS Specific Responses

I have compiled a list of communications to assist you in streamlining all of the district messages.
I understand that parents and students want clarity on the volume of events, trips, and plans that have been postponed. Please be patient. The time it took to build these events was created intentionally.--now, we have to dissemble them without missing any mark. This takes time. We appreciate your patience.
I will be meeting with staff on Monday to collaborate and present to parents the plan for facilitating learning per the message that Dr. Hanlon articulated.  I will be speaking to staff and students on Friday and will share with you the plan no later than Monday.  In the meantime, I can share with you that staff members will have ONLINE office hours to answer class specific plans. This thoughtful plan has been created and will be shared with you once thoroughly vetted.

If anyone in our Geauga County community is in need of food during this crisis, please don’t hesitate to CALL Geauga County Job and Family Services at 440-285-9141.

Likewise, if you have questions regarding Food Service...Chardon Schools has collaborated with Painesville City Schools, as we do for summer, to provide breakfast and lunch services. Information is shared directly with qualifying families.

Message on the Announcements

Good Morning Students and Staff,

Due to the Corona Virus COVID-19, Gov. Dewine has declared that students will not be in school over a period of the next 3 weeks. This change has had an impact on all of our students, staff, and families.  Some have been met with different emotions including anxiety, fear, excitement, and sadness. Since this message has been delivered to us yesterday at 2:45 PM, we have been working with district administrators, teachers, and school counselors to develop our plan for this time.

It is important to note that the Chardon School’s spring break will still be March 23rd through March 27th.  During this time, students will not be required to complete any school assignments. This is the only time in which students are not required to complete work during this extended period away from school.

Our team has worked to develop our plan which will begin for students on Tuesday, March 17th.  On Monday, all teachers will be present at school to plan and develop how instruction will be provided while students are out of the building.  Students will receive a schedule today which will explain when your teacher will be available in a consistent manner each period. In addition, all work during this time will be graded and these grades will affect items such as eligibility, graduation, and final transcripts.

Please note the following specific information which is important for all students to know:

  • Students who are at any vocational placement such as Auburn Career Center or CEVEC.  These schools will be in contact with students who attend these programs and a plan will be provided for how students will meet their school requirements.
  • If you have plans to travel over spring break, it is important that this information is communicated with Chardon Schools.  Please see the information previously released regarding areas where travel advisories are high at this time.
  • Tuesday will be considered a digital learning test pilot day.  This will be the day in which teachers will be making contact with their students to ensure students are able to access their digital learning materials.  It is important that all students participate in this learning day on Tuesday.
  • As of 3/13/2020, AIR Tutoring and all detentions, including Sat. Schools, are postponed until further notice.
  • Keep referencing the Week In Reflection to stay updated with the most relevant information.  There will be a lot of false information spread at this time. Please consider the source of where you are receiving your information.

Effective today, all activities beginning at 2:30 PM will be postponed. No groups may organize outside of school to facilitate practice. This is a directive from our Board of Education. We need to plan accordingly, the volume of emotions that you are having at CHS is shared by thousands of others across the world. It is imperative that you follow the directives from the school, your parents, and take proper precautions with your own health. Please be vigilant in taking your school books, Chromebooks, chargers, and learning essentials with you as you leave today. This includes athletic lockers.

Our district administration are working to create ways to assist all students who might struggle with internet access. All district communications will be communicated via ConnectED and posted on the website.
If anyone in our Geauga County community is in need of food during this crisis, please don’t hesitate to CALL Geauga County Job and Family Services at 440-285-9141.

Likewise, if you have questions regarding Food Service, Chardon Schools are collaborating with Painesville City Schools, as we do for summer, to provide breakfast and lunch services. Information is shared directly with qualifying families.

We are very mindful that this is a ton of information. Our administration, teachers, and counselors will continue to support you and answer any questions that you might have as we transition into this delivery model.

This is a time where we truly live our values. Take care of yourself, take care of your family, and be mindful of the needs of our community. Further communications will follow as we receive them.

Thank you

Mr. Murray, Mr. Bandiera, Mr. Higham

Ohio Department of Education sent this bulletin at 03/12/2020 09:57 PM EDT

Coronavirus School Closure Information from the Ohio Department of Education

Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis, Gov. Mike DeWine announced on March 12th that all Ohio schools will close beginning at the end of the school day on Monday, March 16, through Friday, April 3. This order includes all public, community and private K-12 schools in the state. Read the Governor’s complete media release here.

What’s next for Ohio’s school districts?

While schools will be closed, it is a local decision as to how, when and the degree to which learning will continue. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Paolo DeMaria addresses several questions, shares information about flexibility in federal and state requirements and discusses next steps in this new video.

Finding solutions and providing answers to districts

Now that we know schools will be closed, the Ohio Department of Education can begin to provide clarity on answers related to the minimum hours requirement, accountability issues, testing, special education requirements, ensuring students can get meals and many others.

The U.S. Department of Education issued this release today regarding K-12 flexibilities, student privacy and educating students with disabilities during school closures caused by the coronavirus pandemic. The U.S. Department of Agriculture approved our waiver request so that schools may continue to provide meals at non-congregate sites.

Moving forward together

As State Superintendent DeMaria indicated in his media statement, “We are especially grateful to schools that have proactively developed plans to keep learning going even if school buildings aren’t open. There is a lot of momentum in Ohio’s schools right now and we would hate to see that momentum stalled, although we understand that today’s announcement does mean there will be disruptions.”

Thank you and stay tuned

Thank you to Ohio’s school community for all you are doing and will continue to do on behalf of children. A commitment to students will drive our focus, but flexible, creative solutions will get us through this public health crisis. We pledge to work with you and will continue to share information as it becomes available.

CHS Academic Decathlon

Picture
At State Competition March 6th and 7th, the CHS Academic Decathlon team garnered 19 individual medals! In addition, they made the podium in Super Quiz which is a fast paced, live game show style competition between all teams participating at States. This is the first time in recent memory that Chardon has placed in this portion of the competition finishing just behind two schools who will go on to the National Competition.

Team members pictured left to right are:

Freshman, Nathan Eads - Senior, Megan MacCartney - Sophomore, Paige Yamamoto - Senior, Reese Schneider - Senior, Hannah Holbert - Senior, Meredith McKeon - Freshman, Jake Schneider - and Senior, Josh Campbell. Not pictured Junior, Brendan Sarbach

Rotary Speech Contest

Kaylie Malloy and Hannah Holbert  competed with NDCL students in the 29th annual four-way test speech contest. Hannah was awarded third place, and Kaylie was awarded first place which allows her to compete at the district contest on April 11 at Roosevelt in Kent, Ohio.

The 8th grade students went on a field trip to Auburn Career Center on March 10th. This field trip help align the standards of the Ohio Means Job Career Readiness Seal for our eight graders. The students were matched with career opportunities from surveys that the students took this quarter. The students were exposed to numerous opportunities on this trip. Special thanks to Mr. Kovach who organized this opportunity and for all of his work with the graduation seals.

The Week in Reflection: 3/6

The #Finishline: Where Did The Time GO!

Picture
“Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” We’re all familiar with those plaintive cries from the kids in the backseat. The end of the school year is a lot like those long car trips...but, wait...we are only starting the fourth quarter! We are stopping at a rest area...or are we?

With the uncertainty of March weather and relentless pockets of precipitation, some students feel that it is time to sit in the back seat and wait until they have idled through the finish line. Regardless of what grade that your son(s)/daughter(s) are in, the fourth quarter is the moment to finish...the moment to refine….and the moment to define who they are.

Two decades of teaching and coaching have cemented in my mind the sheer purpose of preparing for beyond the finish line. Many students and athletes look at the endpoint of a year or season as the goal. The reality is that goals are defined well before the year, and season. I wouldn’t prepare for a state title without establishing the backward design model of maximizing upon the off-season/pre-season/in-season preparedness. Likewise, school provides us with many finish lines to pause and reflect which culminates towards the ultimate finish line at commencement.

Wherever you are plotted on the sixteen ‘quarter-markers’ along the high school experience, every stopping point is an opportunity to refine your purpose along the path. Seize this moment and make your mark this quarter!

Hundreds of excited students from across Ashtabula, Cuyahoga (East), Geauga, Lake & Trumball counties tested their science skills in 23 events at Science Olympiad at our regional tournament at John Carroll University last Saturday (Feb 29 2020).  This regional competition is one of 8 held statewide for high school and middle school students in a number of competitive – and fun – events that cover a variety of science fields.  Teams from 19 high schools, and 18 middle schools, competed for medals and the opportunity to represent their region at the State tournament on April 25th at Ohio State University.  Chardon Division B (grades 6-9) took 3rd place and Division C (grades 9-12) came in 6th place, qualifying both to advance to State!

Science Olympiad is a national non-profit organization founded in 1984 dedicated to improving the quality of K-12 science education, thereby creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement by both students and teachers. Events cover earth science, biology, chemistry, physics, engineering and computer science. National Science Olympiad has grown to include over 200,000 students on 7874 teams.

Chardon worked hard this year participating in 3 invitational competitions Division B and 4 for Division C. This prepared them to continue to excel and qualified Division B for the 24th consecutive year for State competition, and Chardon Division C has qualified in 23 out of the 24 past years.

Good luck to all the students who have worked hard all year!

A Message from Dr. Hanlon: COVID 19 (Caronavirus)

I realize that the media coverage of COVID 19 (Coronavirus) has caused a level of concern.  We are taking the spread of the virus seriously and working to stay as informed as possible regarding the latest information and developments on this health concern.

At present, we are at a relatively low risk of exposure and transmission of the virus in this region.  The best steps are common sense recommendations to cover your cough, wash hands frequently and well, stay home when sick, disinfect commonly-touched surfaces (door knobs, light switches, etc.), avoid touching face, eyes/nose/mouth. etc.

Please see the following LINK for updated guidance to schools on preventing the spread of COVID 19.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/guidance-for-schools.html

We are emphasizing the cleaning practices noted above with our maintenance/custodial staff.

Please review the guidance document and continue emphasizing general health practices with students as outlined.

I am attending a meeting with the Geauga Health District on March 10th.  At that time, the latest information will be shared with Superintendents along with any recommendations for action steps.

This is certainly a serious concern on a national and international level.  As noted above, our risk remains relatively low at this time.  Working together, we can minimize conditions favorable to the transmission of COVID 19, as well as other viruses and bacteria.
