11/29/2016 @chs_dmurray: Week in ReflectionWe are ONE. We are UNITED. We are STRONG.The beginning of this week provided us with an opportunity to center ourselves around our Chardon community, staff members, students, and graduates of Chardon High School. Senseless moments like those that took place at The Ohio State University certainly can shake us. Being mindful of the needs of our students, staff, parents, and graduates are absolutely essential when moments like this take place. We had the opportunity to reach out to many graduates who are at OSU this week to check in with them. Likewise, we offered the opportunity for our staff and students to share their needs with us. We are grateful for your emails, and phone calls for our well being as well. The more that we work collaboratively to meet the needs of each other- the stronger our community will be. Continue to be cognizant of your needs and the needs of your children. Feel free to contact us at anytime in ways that we can provide resources to you. What are some practical ways of healing after such events? As the week progressed, a whirlwind of emotions, conversations, questions, and unknown realities impacted us at CHS. The last 24 hours, in particular, have been filled with conversations with students (past and present), parents, staff members, district leaders, and outside individuals who care for one reality....YOU. Please know that your influence matters, your emotions matter, and your words matter. We hold our students and staff as our most valuable resources. Words on paper can shape the law, and words on paper can transform the law. Nick Miraglia is one student who has taken the words from the lessons at CHS to heart. The framework of this week can lead to conversations that unite us- and draw emotions of uncertainty. We will keep you in the loop as our district leaders work hard to understand and challenge those who are able to transform the law. AIR Testing: Fall SessionNext week is AIR testing for students who may need to retest for graduation points. Students who need to test have met with Guidance and Assistant Principal, Kathleen Kisabeth. The students have received a reminder that they should be in the media center at 7:30 AM with a fully charged Chromebook. It is important that students arrive on-time to school on their testing days. The bell schedule will NOT change due to testing. It will be a normal day for all students and staff. The schedule for the week is: Monday, December 5: ELA I and II Wednesday, December 7: Algebra I and Geometry Thursday, December 8: US History Friday, December 9: Biology The following week (December 12-16) will also be used for makeups as needed. Thank you for supporting your child on these tests. Please contact Ms. Kisabeth with any questions at 440-286-0412 Current Graduation Requirements State May Soften Graduation Requirements Complete and Total: Powerful Play Coming to CHS on December 15As I have shared in previous publications, the Chardon ASAP student group are committed to developing a substance abuse prevention program for the school community. This movement started after the overdose deaths of 2 alumni back in Spring of 2015. The students have developed a program they hope will positively impact the school community. This is entirely student led with staff support. The program has 3 key components:
On December 15, the ASAP group, in alignment with their mission, is bringing the original play- Complete and Total to CHS during a morning assembly. Complete and Total is an original play by local playwriting Greg Vovos about the dangers of heroin and drug addiction. It follows the story of a high school student with a bright future ahead of him, but heroin and addiction quickly become his top priority. The Mind, the only sober part left of his brain, believes in his ability to become clean, but it’s not that simple. Enclosed is their letter to the staff: "Good Afternoon, We went to see the play, Complete and Total with Mrs. Blackburn, Mr. Herner and a small group of students. It is crucial that our fellow classmates see this play because it exposes the ugly truth of addiction, and it is written specifically for a high school audience. Personally, we were both deeply affected by this accurate depiction of a tragedy that could become a reality for any high school student or community member. We hope to gather your support for our efforts as we work together to create a safer, healthier, and stronger school community and city. Sincerely, Marissa Perrico and Justin Stanko" Please see the enclosed data points that are currently being shared by local media outlets. Kaiser Family Foundation data Cleveland.com This is a prime example of the student leadership seeing and responding to the needs of our community. I am so grateful for their effort, passion, and commitment to our school! The Learning CommonsIncluded in the teacher newsletter are articles that include links to the Learning Center calendar, the form for submitting morning announcements, and the ODE webpage for teacher license renewal. The Lav Report contains an article about emotional intelligence. Studies show the most successful people aren't necessarily the most intelligent, but those who practice good emotional health. BiologySophomore Maria Cappello, Freshman Natalie Fullerman, and sophomore Rachel Yates conduct an experiment on Photosynthesis in Mr. Mizen's Honors Biology. Sports NutritionSports Nutrition students have been working on the social health component of wellness. Mrs. Kim Butala and her class teamed up with Stephanie W. from T.P.P., and she guided the students through their Relationships-Risk and Reward (RRR) curriculum. These lessons promote the concept that healthy relationships are based on understanding and practicing honest communication. (RRR) uses fun and interactive activities to enhance understanding of students’ communication patterns and relationship habits relating to gender communication differences, use of signs, signals and assumptions in place of open communication, and finally the difference between electronic and interpersonal communication. It’s been a productive important week of learning and understanding information that relates to everyday living. #UToppersOn Thursday, we were able to recognize over 40 of our outstanding students as #UToppers. #UToppers are those students that live our core values within and around the school community. The students recognized this month represent all grade levels at Chardon High School. This month's students were were recognized for positive behaviors including beautification of Chardon High School and our community, hosting students from other schools as they tour Chardon High School, and helping peers in classes. Those students recognized were treated to a pizza lunch on Thursday December 1st. Ms. Kisabeth, Mr. Bandiera, and very are proud to recognize our October/November #UToppers. I am so proud of all of the students! Talent Show: Friday, December 2 at 7pmThe CHS Talent Show is Friday night at 7pm. Hosted by the Drama Department, it's at Park Auditorium and tickets are $5. '16 Chardon Square Christmas Lighting! Thanks to G-TV, Dave Jevnikar, and the sounds of Chardon for making this evening such a memorable night for families Closing Remarks: Kindness Matters. Integrity Gathers. There are two things that can carry any person towards their goals. These things do not cost money, or need degrees. They can be located in the most secure places inside of our core. They are free to give, and can transform our lives. The first is kindness. Every single day is an opportunity for every person to live with a purpose. Each of us were born into a story. Our families began to help shape and model our lives early on. We have the opportunity to author how we use our time and how we live with integrity. This time of year often can be busy towards preparing for celebrations for the holiday season. As a way of focusing on who we are at Chardon, I am challenging our students and staff to live our values by paying it forward. For the next 3 weeks, take the time to schedule acts of kindness into your lives with purposeful consideration. Take a calendar and reflect on ways that you have demonstrated kindness and made another individual's day brighter. The little things make the greatest memories: write a card, call a family member, sacrifice your time for another, tutor, or help out at home without being asked. These are little ways that can create new habits in your life. Thank you for sharing your children with us!
Douglas Murray, Principal We Give ThanksKathleen KisabethHappy Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is not only a time to reflect and be grateful for all we have, but also marks a time of fellowship with friends and family. When I look back to the last year I realize I am blessed more than I deserve to be. I am so grateful for the welcome I have received into the Chardon schools and community. I am fortunate to work with such a friendly staff, who has gone out of their way to make me feel comfortable. I truly appreciate the support. I am beyond blessed to work with such amazing students every day. They come to school ready to learn, grow, and have fun. I was told when I took the job that Chardon had great kids, and that was not a lie. I am blessed to have developed relationships with so many great students in such a short time and look forward to the relationships yet to come. I would be remiss if I did not state how grateful I am for my friends and family that constantly support me. Thanksgiving break is always such a great time to reconnect with them and to let them know how much they are loved and appreciated. I hope you all take time over this Thanksgiving break to remember what it is you have to be thankful for. May this time, and all of the holiday season, be filled with gratitude and goodwill. Ryan BandieraThanksgiving is a great time to look at the past year and remember all of those things that I am thankful for. It is amazing to think that we are already nearing the end of the first semester. I have had the opportunity to develop so many positive relationships with students and families here at Chardon. When I stepped away from being an Intervention Specialist at Twinsburg Schools, I was nervous. This was the only school I knew. It was where I grew up, where I graduated, and I was teaching next to some of my former teachers. How would I ever find a place that would truly feel like home? To my surprise, Chardon High School was that place. I am thankful everyday to walk in and see the smiling faces of students and staff. Students go out of their way to help other students and provide encouragement when others are down. These students don’t just know our core values, they are living proof of them in their daily actions. I am thankful that I have found my new home. This Thanksgiving I am also thankful for my family. Without their support, I would not be half the person I am today. I am thankful for the opportunity to spend this holiday weekend with my wife and parents visiting my brother in Arizona. It is my wish that during this Thanksgiving weekend, all of our Chardon families get to spend quality restful time together with their loved ones. Happy Thanksgiving! Douglas Murray100 days have passed since Opening Day. It is important to take the time to reflect on all of the beauty of the past 100 days. Every single day provides for us an opportunity to give, to learn, and to serve. I am forever grateful to the friends that I have as I walk down each hallway. It is easy to call the staff at CHS my friends. The teachers and staff members energize me with their passion for learning and love of our students. The staff at CHS have rallied this year around one single focus: Live Your Purpose. This simple statement has created a culture of caring, and a focus on high achievement. I love my staff, and I am forever grateful for their gifts that they provide our students.
One of the best parts of my day is interacting with students. This senior class and I came into CHS together. It is hard to believe that they are almost at the halfway point of their memorable year. We have such wonderful students! I truly love their kindness, energy, creativity, and leadership. I am so grateful for the beauty they give to the Chardon community. I am a better man just by working beside each of them. I am grateful for the support, encouragement, and assistance that our parents have provided not only me, but to our teachers, coaches, and community. You continue to model servant leadership to each of us! Most importantly, I am grateful to my beautiful family that sacrifice so much to be with me. My wife is truly my best friend. She is beside me at many events, and often waits up for me for all the dances, and evening events. I am blessed to have our daughters at Chardon, and I look forward to sharing many memories with them through their years in our district. Thanksgiving is an opportunity to give thanks to the simple things in life: family, friends and familiar fellowship. Let this day be a reminder of how the simple things in life are strongest reminders of why we work, why we give, and why we serve. Have a beautiful week with your family! Douglas Murray, Principal Kathleen Kisabeth, Assistant Principal Ryan Bandiera, Assistant Principal 11/12/2016 @chs_dmurray: Week in ReflectionA Season of MemoriesThe core values of Chardon permeated the historical season for all of our Hilltoppers! Since opening day, we have been mesmerized by the beauty of a band that has worked tremendously to create the sounds to the backdrop of a memorable season. The Chardon High School Marching Band demonstrated week to week high achievement. We have all been witnesses to the strongest fan-base in high school sports. Our Chardon Crazies demonstrate each week what makes a strong community. Game after game, we were impressed by the athleticism and humility of the young men competing on the field. Our school was once again impressed by the XC teams, and the countless awards from our Tennis, Soccer, and Volleyball teams. The respect, and rapport of our Topperettes and Majorettes impressed not only the fans, but the countless students that looked up to their strength, and rhythm. This year, like every other year, our community fan base demonstrated energy, passion, love, and modeled dignity as representatives of our greater community. All season long we were overwhelmed by the creativity, optimism, pure joy, and countless moments of kindness that our Cheerleaders provided to us. Finally, we are grateful for the nurturing mentorship that our coaches modeled for every member of our larger community at CHS. We are forever grateful for a the memories, Thank you for leading us down this historical season. Pastor Photo : Photos from the Season Season Highlights: Videos from the Year Last week, I shared the Fall Sports Award recipients. Yesterday, our Football team received some significant awards! Band Awards BanquetCongratulations to our Seniors, MVP's, Musicianship Awards (highest band award), Letter recipients and special recognition awards for this year's annual band awards ceremony! Language Arts LIVELanguage Arts Live! is a speaker and resource program which provides students with examples of how the knowledge they acquire in the classroom translates to the professional world and life beyond high school. The objectives are for students to be able to better understand the various reading, writing and communication skills they are currently learning and to then be able to apply these skills meaningfully to their lives. The key to the success of this series is parental and community involvement which reinforces our CHARDON core values. This week, Jeremy Guy, CJ Paternitti, John Hofstetter, Laurie Thompson, Sheri Wright, Mary Owen, Madelon Horvath, and Dr. Michael Hanlon participated in a panel discussion regarding the use of language and communication skills in various settings. Our seniors, in preparation for college and career readiness, are exploring technical and career writing with the help of mentors currently in the professions to which the seniors aspire. Special thanks to Dawn Weaver, and Lynn Monaco for providing this opportunity for our students! Future Business Leaders of AmericaLast week, ten students from Chardon High's chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) had the opportunity to participate in a business meeting, and tour the facilities of Cardinal Credit Union in Mentor. FBLA members are preparing to open a student-run branch of Cardinal Credit Union in Chardon High School. With a branch located in the school, all students will be provided the chance to open fee-free accounts and develop sound financial habits. More details of this exciting hands-on learning opportunity to come. Chardon High FBLA President, Connor Morris, said about this future business endeavor, "A student run credit union at CHS will be a great addition because it will allow each student to learn about money management. It will also allow students to learn important business and life skills. Students should look for information second semester on how to open an account." Let's get Physic(al)Most of us love the dear old Earth, in fact we’re quite attracted to it. That attraction arises from the Earth’s large mass, not the fact that it is spinning. When we lift a book away from the center of the Earth, we do work on that book. We do work because we must counteract its attraction to the Earth in the process. We do work by applying a force over a distance. What does that do for us? Well, it tires us. The book, however, gets energy out of the deal. The students in Mr. Ciferno's AP Physics classes are learning the connection between work, energy, and power this week in a work energy lab. Graduation RequirementsToday, we are mailing home personalized letters to all families pertaining to your student(s) individual points that he/she has earned through the End of Course Exams. This letter will provide a clear track of the path that your student(s) are on. After reading the letter, please feel free to contact any of the school counselors, or administrators to assist you with your questions. Further details will follow about our Fall Testing dates. Fall Play17 years of plays and musicals can lead to seeing many productions...but there is one thing that stands out at CHS...transformative acting, and performing. Whether observing as a student in the 90's or as an administrator today, our cast and crew are the best in the business. I highly recommend taking the time to see our Fall Play. Actively Caring For PeopleKindness breeds Kindness. Students under the guidance of Rob Mizen, and Joan Blackburn spend purposeful time working with Actively Caring For People (AC4P) and other local districts to create meaningful experiences for the students and staff in their respective schools. National Letters of IntentIt is that time of year, and there are many more coming. Congratulations to Perry Bewley, and Mikaylie Park who signed a National Letter of Intent this week. Midterm ReminderIt is hard to believe that I am talking about the end of the semester. To improve upon your planning, and student preparation for their midterms- the following schedule is now set for the end of the quarter. All students are required to be present for ALL academic class time, but may treat study halls and their lunch period as an open campus. Please review the schedule below. Thank you for sharing your children with us at Chardon High School. The next publication of the Week in Reflection will be on Tuesday. There will be no publication next Friday. Douglas Murray, Principal 11/8/2016 @chs_dmurray: Week in ReflectionHumble and GratefulEveryday is a gift to serve. This past Monday, I was given such a beautiful reminder of the joy of this job. Like most Monday's, I have scheduled meetings in the morning with my secretary, assistant principals, and teacher meetings. Well, this Monday was a moment that I will never forget. A senior student, who usually checks in with me each morning, was trying to get me out of my office for some reason. As I left to meet one of the school counselors, Mr. Mizen's leadership students planned a "Murray Monday". His students welcomed me with hundreds of balloons all over my office, cookies, cards, and kindness. All day long, students came in and shared their gratitude that was so moving. When I went home that evening, I shared with my wife the beautiful cards, goodies, and joy from the day. As a Chardon graduate, my wife totally sees the beauty in our students. We are blessed at Chardon High School, and I am so proud to serve our students. Check your Health![]() Judge Terri Stupica along with Chardon School Resource Officer Mike Shaw presented in all Mr. Armelli’s Health classes this week. Judge Stupica and Officer Shaw shared their knowledge of the over the counter drug abuse, opiate and prescription drugs abuse in Geauga County. Students gained knowledge and were lead in great discussions about OTC/prescription drug/opiate abuse, dangers, and the law. Mr. Armelli has been an amazing resource for our children this year. His knowledge, energy, and ability to bring outside community members into the classroom over the last two decades has guided generations of students at Chardon. We appreciate him! Always remember, It’s a beautiful day! AP World History with a touch of color![]() Students in Mr. Fronk's AP World History course had a great experience on Thursday. Mr. Fronk invited Mrs. Steytler (Art/AP Art History Teacher) to class to share her wealth of knowledge about Greco-Roman art and architecture. The class is currently studying Classical Rome. In the attached picture, students constructed a building which provided a starting point for the period of instruction. Our students love Mr. Fronk's course and the icing on the cake was having two passionate teachers in one room. As you have read from previous articles-- I love cross-curricular opportunities. The more we expand the students knowledge of how the world interconnects--the stronger their learning will be. Well done, Mr. Fronk and Mrs. Steytler! Midterm ScheduleIt is hard to believe that I am talking about the end of the semester. To improve upon your planning, and student preparation for their midterms- the following schedule is now set for the end of the quarter. All students are required to be present for ALL academic class time, but may treat study halls and their lunch period as an open campus. Please review the schedule below. Fall Sports AwardsOn Wednesday, we celebrated Fall Sports Awards. Looking through the robust list of names that have received League, Academic, and State Awards is nothing but extraordinary. I am so grateful of not only the accomplishments of our student athletes, but I am also very appreciative of our coaches, assistants, and volunteers that have placed countless hours in preparing our student athletes for competitions and skills in life. Special thanks to all of our parents for your sacrifice, love, and passion that you have shared for your children this year. We are blessed to have such a supportive community! Later this Fall, the Football Team and Cheerleaders will celebrate their awards. OMEA Honor Choir Kirsten Henry, Brice Karl, Cassandra Leach, Connor Prusha, Hunter Sarbach, and Matt Klingsbergs are attending the OMEA District VII Honor Choir at Cleveland State University today. They will be paired with top students from 20 other school districts to prepare an advanced program experience for Saturday afternoon. What an awesome experience for our students! Update from CHS Gym: AKA "The Barn"As you are aware, the CHS gym has seen some recent improvements over the last two years. The floor was completely sanded and brought back to new life, the walls were painted, the ceiling was repaired. On top of the changes, new signage has been introduced. This week, with the shared leadership of LIBTFI (Leave it Better Than You Found It) and the vision of many leaders--The CHS Gym- aka: "The Barn" is applying new decals. Some of the decals include: The Alma Mater, Our Core Values, #TopperUp, the Chardon Crazies, and welcome sign. Below, is the beginning touches that Fulton Sign has prepared for us. Stop by and see the upgrades soon! ElectionWith the presidential election at a closure, it is time for the "noise" to settle with all of the advertisements, phone calls, social media news, and newscasts to focus on drawing our lens on our purpose. Regardless of your political beliefs- we have an obligation to come together and collaborate on a single focus. A simple lesson that we can learn from an election of this caliber is the power of your voice, your vote, and your rights as American Citizens. Our Social Studies teachers have used this election as teachable moments with curricular connections. As I mentioned on my first day to the staff: Coming together is just the beginning, staying together will lead our progress, and working together will transform lives for generations of Hilltoppers....or in this case, Americans. We have faced economic difficulty, international and domestic concerns since the beginning of our great country. No election will recoil us to a day where we cannot survive. Our purpose will guide us, our intentions will ground us, and our love of country will mold us a ONE. Standing United we will mold our continued vision of tomorrow. The first attributed use in modern times to "Standing United" comes to us from one of our Founding Father's, John Dickinson, in his song "The Liberty Song". In the song, Dickinson wrote: "Then join hand in hand, brave Americans all! By uniting we stand, by dividing we fall!" I am not one to ever go political, but I thought it was important to share a simple statement based on my observations of the world this week. ClosingOnce again, it has been a busy week at CHS. Looking back since August---it is easy to see why Chardon is a great place to be! Douglas Murray, Principal Coming Up:Friday, November 11: Hilltopper Football v. Warren G.
