Reflection is an important act that regardless of your profession or role, is something that we all need to take part in regularly. On a daily basis, the interactions we have, the actions we take, and the decisions we make, likely have an impact on someone else, ourselves, or otherwise that we may never be aware of. Personally, reflecting was not something that I had always done. Nowadays it is all that I do. Lucky for you [eye-roll intended] my thoughts come once a week in this newsletter. However, as a student in high school and growing up, the only time that I felt like reflecting was on Sunday mornings. Little did I know that reflecting once a week would begin a journey for me.
As a teacher, for many of my beginning years, colleagues would ask for my thoughts on a lesson that I had taught, or my principal would discuss an observation with me and ask me to reflect on my lesson. But other than those experiences, reflecting was not something that I could say I did on a regular basis--besides on Sunday. I was not intentional about it and did not fully realize the importance of doing so for many years. No single event transformed me into a reflective learner--but a culmination of many things: teaching, coaching, working, and children. My eyes began to open to a much bigger world and my place within it. In 2003, I began to write more and I modeled this for my students as they began to journal, I made sure that every assignment had a purpose of engagement and my students began to blossom as readers, thinkers, and writers. It was that year that I was nominated to speak to the students at Commencement. From that point forward, almost everything that I did was reflective. I became very involved in community engagement while reflecting on each experience as an opportunity to grow as a person. It just became my thing. In order to bring our best selves into our classrooms each day, we (students and staff) must evaluate our own practice and use a reflective process to grow as people. We also need to help each other develop these skills. It is important that we model reflection and provide different ways for our children to reflect as well. Not only will we help them build their skills, become self-aware and develop a greater understanding of their interests and needs, but we will also provide them with learning experiences that will benefit them in the future regardless of where their education takes them or which careers they pursue later on in life. Looking back, it is hard to reflect upon the tens of thousands of printed pages from the Week in Reflection this year. It is a daunting novel, with a true beginning, and the 149th finish line on Saturday. Notice it doesn't have an ending. It allows for new stories to develop from the class of 2022 while the rest of the student body writes their story. I really love and appreciate all of our students for who they are, where they are, and where they are going. Use this summer to reflect on your story and your place in this shared experience. Reflecting is important for all of us because it’s how we evaluate our actions. We can explore who we are, whether looking at the qualities and traits that we convey to others, our behaviors, and how we interact with other people. It’s important that we continue to understand ourselves and work on bringing our best selves to our families every day and to those with whom we work. When we work on this together, we will have it become a regular part of our daily practice and will continue to grow. I believe in all of you and my hope is that you take this summer to regroup, re-energize, and renew your purpose! With love, -Murray Auburn Career Center Ceremony
Congratulations to all of our Auburn Career Center seniors who graduated this week from their programs! We are so grateful for all of the work that the students, and staff member put forth this year at Auburn! SO many students earned awards, and notoriety!

Mrs. Newman's Mythology class compared and contrasted one aspect of three different culture's myths for their final. Students researched creation myths, sun gods, air gods, afterlife, etc. They chose which medium or genre in which they wanted to present their information. Students made posters, created Google slide presentations, wrote short stories, and painted watercolors.
Pictured here is Katie Schuler's watercolor paintings of the afterlife of three different types of mythology. From top to bottom: Land of Reeds (Egyptian), Valhalla (Norse), and Elysian Fields (Greek). Video of the Week: C.R.E.W.After Prom Message

Be YOU! Be Kind! Be Blessed! Douglas Murray, Principal 5/16/2022 The Week in Reflection 5/20Class of 2022: Parting Words
During the last year or so, after your parents first realized that the rest of your life had inexplicably sped past, they tried not to be obvious. But maybe you noticed. In spite of all that you were going through in school, sports, and even at work, your family tried to slow the calendar, stop the clock. They were trying, of course, to hang on to you.
The very thing that they committed to year’s ago- rearing, raising, training you for independence- your parents now began to fear. I’m sure some may have been emotional; they may have been firm, or even built walls between you. Every sign that indicated you had learned and matured and were ready to face the world only reminded them how young you seemed. But your parents couldn’t run from the truth. You were leaving and the day was coming soon. Some of your parents may have been so desperate to hang on that they couldn’t even exult in your growth and progress. Why, you ask, a lot of it was due to your maddening independence, that I-can-do-it-myself attitude that reminded both of them so much of their own adolescence, or even that look that asked, “Why do you have to know everything?” or “What does it matter to you?” may have cemented in their aching heart the truth: You had become your own person. It’s what they had wanted. But, your time together this year went by too quickly. There may have been days when they didn’t want it at all. Yet, throughout all the fights over applications, and deadlines, your parents knew that this was for the best. It’s time. And maybe from their perspective, there will never be a good time. Your parents have realized that the longer they hang on to you, the more they protect you from the real world. If you don’t jump in, you’ll never find yourself. And so they must nudge you from the nest. Seeing you leave for college or your career may remind them of the first time they let you go in the water. Only this time they are not going to be at arm’s length, ready to grab as you panic. They will not stand by with reassuring words that say, “I’m just seeing if you can float alone.” For this is the real thing. Your parents will let you go; you will be on your own, and they will back away. The other metaphor that may come to mind is your first time on two wheels. Mom or dad ran along beside, reaching, adjusting, holding the seat, helping you gain momentum and speed. Soon you were on your wobbly way, unable to turn, riding through puddles, over curbs, slowing to painful, tumbling stops before leaping up to try again. Now they will give your two-wheeler one last shove and watch. No more running alongside. You had enough of that. You won’t admit it, but there will be times when you whirl around expecting your parents to be there. They won't be, and you will think twice about calling, about asking to be bailed out of a jam. There will be bumps and bruises and as much as they would like to protect you from them, your parents will walk away to see you grow. You may be swindled, maybe even endangered because of your own innocence. Your parents could intervene, could warn you, or could slow you on a headlong path to believing someone because “he seemed like a great guy, or she seemed like a great girl.” They could urge you to let time be the test of relationships, to think twice, even three times, before investing in anything. But you must learn from your own mistakes. Your parents and teachers know because they have been there. We all have gone against our own better judgment, so why shouldn’t you? Even I knew better, or should have. I have been told enough times by my own parents. But some things you must learn on your own. You may fail, and you will kick yourself and wonder why you forged ahead. There will come a time that you will know that your life was shaped by the lessons you could learn only from your own mistakes. Graduates of 2022, I am at an age, where I finally can realize the wisdom, encouragement, and love that a parent gives to a child. As a parent of two beautiful daughters--the love shared between parents to their children is never a superficial root that may drive you away from their love, but a permanent foundation that grants you the opportunity to blossom into an adult. You must realize that as you transition into a new chapter of your life, your parents, brothers, sisters, and even your friends are going through the same transition. I know that your parents are so proud of you. Even through the good and bad times of this year, you have grown in such a way that radiates the beauty of every one of you. Graduates, look around. You are so gifted and talented. Your class emulates success. Academically, athletically, socially, and within the community, Your parents, and teachers have watched you grow daily and we are so proud to honor you today in your accomplishments. Many people state that you are the future. You are more than that. You Are The Strength Of Today. Forever in my heart, Mr. Murray Schedule Next WeekVideo ExplanationImage of Schedule

During the last week of school, student in grades 8-11 will report to school each period. The only sections that are not mandatory to report to is study hall, and few already assessed mixed courses. All study halls will be supervised as regularly scheduled. Breakfast will only be served during exam week. Furthermore, transportation will run at regular times for those students that need morning and afternoon transportation. All students in grades 8-11 will either be in class for the end of the year closure activities, project presentations, tests for the quarter, or final examinations. The school day begins at the regularly scheduled times, and concludes at 11:30 AM. The time placed aside for these courses allows each student to best prepare for last classes with their teacher for this quarter. There are some very important reminders to how grades are assessed for the end of the year:
GRADE DETERMINATION - The final grade for a course is determined by GPA in all grades 8-12: A -- 3.50 or above B -- 2.50 to 3.49 C -- 1.50 to 2.49 D -- 0.50 to 1.49 In order to pass any course a student must have attained each of the following: 1. Have a grade average 0.5 or above 2. Pass three out of five grades for a year-long course 3. Pass two out of three grades for a semester course 4. Pass one of the last 2 grades of the course (the fourth (4) nine weeks and the final exam) On the day scheduled for each subject’s midterm/final exam, the teacher will give a final test or conduct some other type of final assessment learning experience. Students are expected to attend their exam period unless prior arrangements are made and confirmed. Failure to do so will result in a failing grade on the midterm/final. The final exam/assessment will be weighted as 1/3 of the final grade for a semester course or 1/5 of the final grade for a year-long course. Teachers will record an Incomplete grade as an F if the student fails to make up the work by an agreed upon deadline. GRADING POLICY - The Chardon Board of Education adopted the following grading scale for all students. A 90 -100 B 80 - 89 C 70 - 79 D 60 - 69 INCOMPLETES - Incompletes, as stated by board policy, that are recorded on report cards must be changed within three weeks after the grading period has ended unless prior arrangements have been made. Each quarter grade the following points are earned. 4 points for an A 3 points for a B 2 points for a C 1 point for a D To determine the final course grade the points for each quarter and the final exam are added together and then averaged. The final grade for a course is determined by the average of the points earned. Eligibility : Your work this quarter allows you the ability to play this fall. Be certain to understand this policy. Have a beautiful weekend with family and friends! Next week is the FINISH LINE!
Douglas Murray 5/9/2022 The Week in Reflection: 5/13I think I can. I think I can
The Little Engine That Could is an American folktale that became widely known in the United States after publication in 1930 by Platt & Munk. The story is used to teach children the value of optimism and hard work.
One of the key lines from the book is I think I can, I think I can. Throughout the week, this mantra crossed many of our minds at CHS. With the beautiful weather surrounding this week, the last round of AP testing, Spirit Week, Prom, After Prom, Playoffs, Senior Awards, and literally 87 make-up games and meets--it was a marathon. A good marathon for adults certainly has benefits, but many students and staff alike are longing for the finish line. We will get there, but the mantra needs to change from I think I can to I know I will. There are so many events that have either happened this week, this weekend or leading into next week that is important to read these details carefully. Make today great! Nominee: 2023 Ohio Teacher of the Year- Mrs. Tara Kaiser![]()
In February, I nominated Mrs. Tara Kaiser as a candidate for the 2023 Ohio Teacher of the Year. This week, we were notified that Mrs. Kaiser was named a nominee for this prestigious award. Within the 610 schools districts in Ohio that most likely have over 100-200 teachers per district, being awarded as a nominee is an enormous accomplishment. There are many amazing teachers in our building and district that equally show the dedication aligned to our mission. What stands out with Mrs. Kaiser is her countless ways that she weaves our core values, continuous community outreach, and differentiated styles to meet the learning styles of all of her students.
Enclosed is the paragraph that I wrote for Mrs. Kaiser: Chardon Local Schools reconfigured buildings in 2018 to meet enrollment and economic needs. During this period of time, the high school brought the 8th-grade class into the building. This daunting task was overwhelming for every stakeholder. However, throughout all of this, Tara Kaiser brought energy, expertise, passion, and such value to the students and staff at Chardon High School. Her focus on relationships, intervention, extraordinary use of technology, and ability to adapt to the culture and climate at Chardon High School has been extraordinary. The students absolutely love her class, and the staff loves her energy. Parents love her ability to communicate and adapt to all learning styles. She is on many committees inside of the building, leading PLC's, strategic plans, and intentionally goes to watch her students in extra-curricular activities. She is often the first to volunteer, and always asks how she can help. She knows her purpose, lives the vision and mission of our district, and understands how wellness leads to understanding the standards. Let's celebrate this awesome nominee! Chardon High School's C.R.E.W program tackles community, workforce demands through skill-building rubric. Congratulations to the class, along with the work that Mrs. Britt and Mrs. Butala provide each day for these students. This is a program that will be headlining more networks in the near future.

As we transition to the last few weeks of the school year, it is important that parents/guardians review any outstanding school fees prior to the end of the year. I appreciate you going through Infinite Campus and administering payments throughout the year. Every year that fees are not addressed they can add up to a fee total that can be overbearing. By the end of the senior year, the district must close out all fees that are remaining. Please review any outstanding fees and make payment by the end of the school year for grades 8-12.
Chardon High School can hold transcripts upon graduation to a post secondary institution for non-payment of fees,. Please review the statement and continue to use Infinite Campus to review and pay fees. If you need access to Infinite Campus, please go to the Chardon Schools website under the resources section to learn more about access information to Infinite Campus and paying fees online. If you have questions about your invoice, please contact Erin Koehler, Chardon High School Clerk at 440-285-4057 X. 1441 or email her at erin.koehler@chardonschools.org Senior Class Picnic Sign-up: Parent Volunteers

GRADE DETERMINATION - The final grade for a course is determined by GPA in all grades 8-12:
A -- 3.50 or above B -- 2.50 to 3.49 C -- 1.50 to 2.49 D -- 0.50 to 1.49 In order to pass any course a student must have attained each of the following: 1. Douglas Murray, Principal 5/3/2022 The Week in Reflection 5/6#NeverQuit![]()
It is that time of the week when I quote a song. The best one that comes to mind is David Bowie's Under Pressure.
It has been been a pressure filled week and it is so important to pause at the end of all of the communications, tasks, meetings, and plans to take a deep breath. It is important to reflect on all of the positives and ways that those we encountered where influenced by our care. I am in constant contact with information. I am constantly work, serving, and reading. Recently, I stumbled upon an obscure study from the University of Arizona that indicates that men and women average around 15-16,000 words a day. When you think about it, that is a ton of communication. The question is how have we used our words to influence, create kindness, and positively impact others versus cause stress, frustration, or sadness. Our words matter and our reflection of our words matter. Sometimes, the best words are no words. We become active listeners. Be You, Be Kind, BeLIEVE! The finish line is just around the corner. This year, Mr. Mizen's Leadership class learned about Philanthropy in the second semester. The capstone project that these students had to complete was called Magnified Giving. This Cincinnati organization gives students the opportunity to give a $1000.00 donation to their favorite non-profit organization. Eight Ohio non profits were selected and the Leadership students had to give a presentation to win over the other students and have them choose their non-profit to get the $1000.00 grant. After a couple of weeks of presentations, the students narrowed the field to two nonprofits. The two finalists had to then film a video of their selection and present it to the eighth grade class during their Circuit of Success class. After careful consideration, Johnny Smarzly and Braden Schmauder's non-profit called "Pets for Patience" won the competition and Magnified Giving will be sending this organization in the name of Chardon High Schools students Johnny Smarzly and Braden Schmauder'a check for $1000.00.
QPR Training![]()
This past week 50 students were trained in QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) by members of the Geauga Sheriff Departments Loss Team and the ESC of Lake County. Special thank you to Mrs. Lisa Cardina and Mrs. Danielle Veon for supporting the students. A huge thank you to the Chardon Athletic Boosters for donating Hilltopper items for this event.
Key messages from the training included the idea of friends never let friends keep secrets about suicide, tell an adult, and students should know where to get help immediately. Ravenwood staff taught students about the Geauga County Copeline and other 24/7 hotlines. This helped the students to understand what happens when a hotline call is made. Prom Spirit WeekClass of 2022 Prom Tickets: Now on Sale
The Senior class is excited to celebrate the 2022 Prom together at La Vera, in Willoughby, OH. This will be a traditional prom that allows seniors and guests to participate. This year, students may select their seats at prom. Once a seat is selected, the seat will fill in gray color. As an example, groups that would be interested in guaranteeing a table of 4, 6, or 8 would need to purchase their tickets on one transaction and reimburse the one purchasing the bulk tickets. Table placards will be available for students at the check-in. The Junior Executive Student Council is excited to put on this event for the students. Tickets go on sale on May 1, 2022. The sales end electronically on Monday in order for us to inform LaVera of numbers.

Happy Mother's Day!
After everything you've done for me — the opportunities you've handed me, the countless mood swings you've endured from me, the life you've given up for me — I'm supposed to send you a card with flowers, and that's supposed to be enough? Flowers, cards and massage gift certificates do not get my point across. Taking you out to dinner won't do it justice. Buying you balloons isn't going to inflate my point. All of it seems so… trite. A Hallmark card won't ever be able to explain exactly why I love you. Exactly why I'm proud to call you my mom. Exactly how grateful I am for you. Instead, I'll just tell you. I'll tell you exactly why I respect you, not try and fit it into some two-by-two-inch card. I will tell you exactly what I should say every day of every month of every year. I'll tell you exactly why I love you.
Happy Mother's Day to all of our CHS Moms! Douglas Murray, Principal |
