Homecoming WeekIt is hard to believe that we are in Homecoming Week. The amount of time, effort, and creativity that celebrates such an important time in the life of a high school student is coming together this week. We are so grateful to the Student Council Moderators, Mrs. Carrie Korenke and Mr. Chenoweth along with their remarkable student leaders for collaborating on the themes for each day! For months, the students have been planning and creating the backdrop effects for this evening. Walking the halls this week, it was great to see the students engaged in class, collaborative experiences, facilitation, working through various labs, and engaged in school spirit! The culmination of Homecoming week is reaching the apex. Who will win from the Homecoming Court? Students will find out who is Homecoming Queen at 6:40 PM the night of the game. The king will be crowned at the Homecoming Dance. Our Homecoming Dance provides the opportunity for students to come together as a community to celebrate our school. This dance, which is moderately formal, creates an inclusive evening for all of our students to socialize, dance, and celebrate our new king and queen of CHS. Years of collaborative leadership between the students and staff have created norms for the evening. The core value that will be our focal point surrounds Community and Respect. We have a treasured community at Chardon. We pride ourselves on our inclusive values and respecting self and others. Staff, Administration, and local officers will be present to provide a safe, and secure school environment. The dance is from 7-11 pm. Students will receive wristbands to indicate their recorded attendance and to work as a reminder to the students of our dance contract that they signed prior to purchasing the tickets. Likewise, our adult chaperones will be proactively visible throughout the evening for the students. Homecoming tickets went on sale ONLINE on Monday. This determination was made by the Student Council as a way to secure the nearly $15,000 that was collected during lunches. The price of a homecoming ticket is $23.50. Mrs. Korenke and Mr. Chenoweth are very appreciative of your patience an understanding in moving into this model. They will continue to refine how this procedure can become less cumbersome for future transactions. This was a decision made collaboratively by the students and moderators. As stated earlier, students will need to sign to the terms of the dance contract at the time of purchase and anyone bringing a guest that does not attend Chardon High School will need to pick up a guest form and dance contract in student services. The dance is Saturday, September 29, from 7:00 p.m to 11:00 p.m. The homecoming king will be crowned at 10:00 p.m. The homecoming assembly will take place in the CHS gymnasium on Friday, September 28, at 8:44 AM in the morning. Parents and families of court members may attend the assembly. The homecoming parade is Friday, September 28th. Grades 9-12 will be creating a float and the 8th-grade student council will march in the parade. The parade starts at 6:00 p.m. and will head west on Chardon Ave., South on North St., East on Allynd Blvd. and north on Maple. The homecoming queen will be crowned at 6:40 during the football pre-game. Please join us for this exciting evening! In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. Commended Students In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Congratulations to Heather Humbert, and Nicholas Gehrke for being recognized as commended students! ![]() Semifinalists In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. NMSC provides scholarship application materials to Semifinalists through their high schools. To be considered for a National Merit® Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements explained in the information provided to each Semifinalist. Congratulations to Isabelle LeMaster for being recognized as a Semi-Finalist! Important Message: PSAT/PreACT--October 10, 2018To Parents/Guardians of Sophomore and Junior students: Chardon High School will be offering a unique College and Career Readiness morning this fall. On Wednesday, October 10th, all Junior and Sophomore students will be taking a practice version of a college entrance exam with the intent of giving your son or daughter the opportunity to experience these timed test, with the pacing and the question formatting, in order to provide you with information on areas to improve prior to taking the actual test. Testing will begin promptly at 7:20 AM (which results in no late-start on this morning for these students). Students need to plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to locate their testing location and to be prepared to take the test. Juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT. This is a practice test for the SAT, an entrance exam that many colleges utilize to assess a potential student’s academic strengths and readiness for college. This test also has a scholarship component through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Juniors who score in the highest percentiles may be given the opportunity to advance in this scholarship program. Historically a test that we required students to register for, we chose to administer the test this year to all Juniors in an effort to enhance their opportunity to perform well in the spring on another nationally standardized test (the ACT, which will be given to all Juniors on February 26, 2019). This will also give all test-takers the opportunity to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Students were assessed the typical registration fee at the beginning of the school year for this test ($16.00- the base price), in lieu of requiring a registration process. The results from the test can be used to determine if students are currently on track for college-level coursework and offers an interest inventory that gives students some additional tools to use when determining a future career. Sophomores will be taking the PreACT. Another practice test, the PreACT simulates the ACT testing experience within a shorter test window on all four ACT test subjects: English, math, reading and science. This test, geared toward 10th grade students, can be used to predict future success on the ACT and offers an interest inventory that also provides students with a personalized view of interests and college and career alignment. Students were assessed $12.00- the fee that is charged by ACT to score their results, at the beginning of this school year. Guidance will be visiting with Juniors in Government in the next couple weeks to complete pre-registration materials and will be given a packet that includes a practice test with information for test day. Sophomores will be notified of what to expect and bring on test day, as well. Both tests also give students the opportunity to opt in to college and scholarship search programs by providing their address and email address, so students should come prepared with an email address where they would like to receive notifications (if they would like to opt in to this service), as well as #2 pencils and a calculator for test day. Any questions or concerns about the test can be directed to Lacey Jacobs, School Counselor (lacey.jacobs@chardonschools.org). Sincerely, Lacey Jacobs, M.S.Ed. Fall: Obladi, Oblada...
The Beatles classic song, Obladi-Oblada...is quite catchy and either loved or hated by those who listen. Some say it has meaning, while others struggle to find it...yet for all, life goes on. This week we entered the Autumnal season. Just as the meteorological season has quite a story...so do we.
Life is full of opportunities. These moments come and go and do we even seize the moments? Does life go on? Autumn is an opportunity to pause and reflect on all of our blessings that surround us. It an opportunity to give thanks, and it an opportunity to prepare for the "Long and Winding Road."
How has the first month been for you? Are you still on track for your goals? Have you built the capacity for success? Questions like this are meant to make you pause. Whether you are a parent, student, or teacher reading this---you might have to reflect on your purpose and your place in the story.
In school, we have bells to create start and end times--but the fluidity of life constantly flows for parents, teachers, and students. I have lived inside of bells my whole life- but, what matters most to my story is how I spend my time between the bells; more importantly, how I spend my time with the priorities that I have established.
Students, many of you are on point. You have adapted and created new habits along the way. Take this Autumn to refine, re-fuel and re-set timelines and priorities toward those areas in your life that are not only strengths but also your weaknesses. Make the time to refine one area of your life that you want to be more successful in...the quarter ends in one month. Look in the mirror and see your beauty and share your gifts in and out of the classroom. Live your Purpose!
Parents, you sacrifice so much for your children. As they grow older, many of them develop both a natural and unnatural independence. Take this Autumn to remind your children of their self-worth, and your unconditional love for them. They need you more than ever in this everchanging world.
Teachers, you are the extensions of the family. You spend so much time with students helping them along their journey. Take this Autumn to build your self-efficacy. Many times more than not, you are the catalyst that can change a child's world. Keep up your great work and take time for yourself! WE APPRECIATE YOU!
...more importantly, this year is an opportunity to have fun---so, if you want some fun --sing ob la di bla da

State Report Card and Quality Profile
While the local report card is but one measure of the effectiveness of our district, it does provide comprehensive data to note the overall alignment of our academic programming.
There were several specific areas of the report card to applaud:
- Achievement on 20 of 24 indicators
- Increase on our District Performance Index to 102.423
- For the second year in a row, Chardon is ranked in the top 10% of districts state-wide
- Increase in the percentage of students demonstrating proficiency in most areas
These achievements, and others inherent in the increase in our Performance Index, were a direct result of each of your concentrated efforts to align curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Our purposeful engagement of high yield instructional strategies realized marked gains.
As we look to the future, we will continue to act to realize our mission as detailed with our strategic plan (Vision 2020). We must continue to relentlessly focus on the standards, collaborating to ensure that both our instructional and assessment practices are aligned with the standards. And we must continue to refine and implement purposeful interventions.
As a district leadership team, our principals and department chairs have been and will continue with the work of affirming power standards, and ensuring instructional and assessment alignment with those power standards. Our work within the construct of grade and subject-level PLCs will ensure the fidelity and efficacy of our work. Within those purposeful meetings, we focus on:
- What we want students to know
- How we know when they know that
- What we do when they don’t demonstrate that
- What we do when they do demonstrate that
Through our focused and purposeful work, we will continue to realize high achievement for all students. Let’s celebrate our successes, and continue our work towards our mission.

Free Harmony
Appalachian Service Project
Last year, Project SALES, a service learning group that began as a grassroots effort among local educators, was looking to continue to build upon its success in helping develop young leaders whose focus is on service.
The mission of Project SALES is to provide an educational experience for high school students in Lake and Geauga Counties that allows them to explore local issues that impact them and their community, as well as how these issues fit into the larger context of the state of Ohio and beyond.
Last year 40+ students attended four days of leadership training that included: team-building, networking, service leadership, and strategic planning with a focus on solving a local issue or concern. In addition, students were required to either individually or collaboratively create an action plan to tackle this project and present the results to different boards of area organizations that supported their endeavors. Lastly, the students attended a week-long service project in Jonesville, Virginia, where they assisted the local population in necessary home improvements.

Important Information from NAMI
Each year, more than 41,000 individuals die by suicide, leaving behind their friends and family members to navigate the tragedy of loss. In many cases, friends and families affected by a suicide loss (often called “suicide loss survivors”) are left in the dark. Too often the feelings of shame and stigma prevent them from talking openly.
September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month—a time to share resources and stories in an effort to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic. We use this month to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. It is also important to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention. NAMI is here to help.
Informational Resources
- Know the Warning Signs and Risk of Suicide
- Preventing Suicide as a Family Member or Caregiver
- Being Prepared for a Crisis
- Need more information, referrals or support? Contact the NAMI HelpLine.
Crisis Resources
- If you or someone you know is in an emergency, call 911 immediately.
- If you are in crisis or are experiencing difficult or suicidal thoughts, call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273 TALK (8255)
- If you’re uncomfortable talking on the phone, you can also text NAMI to 741-741 to be connected to a free, trained crisis counselor on the Crisis Text Line.
Awareness Resources
Help promote awareness by sharing images and graphics on your website and social media accounts. Use #SuicidePrevention or #StigmaFree.
While suicide prevention is important to address year-round, Suicide Prevention Awareness Month provides a dedicated time to come together with collective passion and strength around a difficult topic. The truth is, we can all benefit from honest conversations about mental health conditions and suicide, because just one conversation can change a life.

What is the truth about those vending machines at CHS?

We collaborated on a plan to upgrade two of our machines with the "Hello Goodness" branding with more USDA approved options.
What was most eye-opening was the caffeine misnomers with the products that we provide. At the high school, we have an increased revenue with Mountain Dew Kickstart. At first glance, parents and some teachers were concerned with the potential caffeine intake with our students. Kickstart has 68 mg of caffeine versus Starbuck's Blonde Roast 's 475 mg, or Dunkin' Donuts Cappuccino's 233 mg---all products that make their way into the building each morning (prior to the school day).
Enclosed is a great reference guide to look over, along with a great link provided to us by Chardon Food Service.
https://cspinet.org/eating-healthy/ingredients-of-concern/caffeine-chart#.W5vq6KkHyNM.email
We have a great relationship with Chardon Food Service. Our ladies provide nutritious and numerous options for our students that taste great while following all regulations necessary. It is important for our students and our parents to be mindful that open campus students cannot bring outside food (Subway, Arby's, etc) upon returning back to school. However, students may bring food from home, or packaged from leftover meals - i, e: leftover Congins, Subs, etc.
Chardon Goes to the Musicals
We have expanded the program this year and renamed it "Chardon Goes to the Musicals." We have reserved seats for all of the Broadway Series, as well as three of the additional shows. I already sent out a sneak peek to the people who participated last year and the feedback is very positive, with some tickets already sold. Lots of interest in Chardon Goes to the Musicals; tickets are selling. Les Miserables is due to Munson PTO by 9/25/18.

Leading by Example
For the past six years, I have served on the administrative team. I love every second of what I do at Chardon High School and I am deeply humbled at the direction we are moving. Every day is a new experience for us with 1,200 students and 112 staff members in the building. The focus on our mission is the heart of our daily decisions through a lens of our core values.
We have accomplished so many extraordinary tasks that build upon and refines the treasured traditions and outcomes of being a graduate of Chardon High School. Yet, the best experiences are the ones that take me back into the classroom.
This week, I had the opportunity to teach inside of Mr. Mizen's Principle of Leadership course to his 8th-grade section. One of the best feelings is to collaborate, lead, and serve students in the most impactful way as an educator. The lesson was on the essential role of leadership versus the important role of being a follower. Listening and drawing real life inferences into the lesson provided thirty minutes of our mission in action.
The next day, I found myself co-teaching a lesson in AP World History with Mr. Fronk. This lesson dug deep into the standards of language, culture, and impact on the Judeo world within the greater context of the world that we live in. I am not sure if the students were mesmerized that I could read and write Hebrew, or the fact that the language and culture plays a bigger role than they once perceived.
Teaching is my passion. My purpose is to serve and inspire others to find theirs in any capacity that I can encounter students and staff. Wow, do I love what I do --and completely love the shared vision that our educators present in their arenas of learning.
Teachers encapsulate so many roles each day. They are not only licensed educators--they are counselors, caretakers, facilitators, leaders, guides, planners, collaborators, reinforcers, statisticians, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters; a vessel of knowledge and experiences who serve and are often underappreciated.
Multiple that a few times with a few other roles and you could write this blog for the small audience of weekly readers.
2018 Homecoming Court
Important GMAIL Communication: 8-12 (Ages 13+)
Google Apps and Chromebooks offer a set of web-based tools that includes email, calendars, websites, and documents designed to improve collaboration and learning. These district provided Chromebooks have numerous filters to create a secure and safe access to digital content. At the elementary and middle school levels, student GMAIL accounts are restricted; they can only communicate with teachers and other students with @chardon.us addresses. Next week, students in grades 8-12 (ages 13+) will see their GMAIL specific accounts have fewer restrictions in order to communicate with colleges, businesses, and utilize the tools set forth inside of Naviance (a comprehensive K-12 college and career readiness tool that we use at CHS).
Each year, our students are limited in their abilities to communicate to these agencies due to the restriction held inside of the high school domain. If you are uncomfortable with this access, please communicate to us by today, September 14, and we will not open this function inside of your son(s)/daughter(s) account.
The full functionality of GMAIL will open by Friday, September 14. We are very mindful of COPPA regulations which impose certain requirements on operators of websites or online services directed to children under 13 years of age, and we respect parent/guardian concerns pertaining to the adjustment to GMAIL.
Of course, security and privacy are very important to us. So is transparency. We hope you’ll take some time to learn more about the digital tools your student may use in school, and how their data are protected. Digital citizenship and internet safety are part of our instruction at every grade level, but it is important to continue the conversation at home. We encourage you to talk to your student about what they do online, appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, expectations, and healthy practices.
Please visit this site for tips to help keep your children safe online.
We’re excited about the new opportunities our students and teachers now have to make connections, learn, and grow.

Beautiful Week for Learning at CHS
What a season we have been experiencing locally and nationally. The frequent change in temperature gives signs of a new season and a reminder of the beauty around us. Soon and very soon we will see the change of scenery and a reminder how short summer is in Northeast Ohio. Yet, for most people in Chardon, we acclimate to the upcoming season and shortened days. We remember that this is nature's way of nurturing itself after a long year.
This is a perfect time for each of us to remember the simple things in life: Faith, Family, and Friends. For many people in Chardon, these reminders come in all shapes and sizes. They emulate stories, memories, and a reminder of how short our time can be with people.
Faith can remind us of our own humanity, or even a trust in another person. Having faith gives us a sense of hope and optimism in demonstrating our dignity to all people. The new season can provide us the opportunity to rekindle our belief and hope in humanity by the actions and responses that we demonstrate to others.
Family is the root of our own autonomy. Growing up, we depend so much on our own parents and relatives to nurture and guide us through good and bad times. As we get older, we begin to develop independence from our family and we begin to gain--and sometimes-- lose their trust. CHS students aren't immune to these changes. We value that every student has their own story, values, and routines ---but what is essential is that our children take the time to recognize the importance of how family time allows for their independence to guide their choices and behaviors.
Friends are essential to our development regardless of our age. We value to the beauty of authentic communication that allows us to grow in our abilities in and out of school. Technology is a wonderful tool that allows us to communicate. It can become a double-edged sword in our ability to develop meaningful and long lasting relationships. Sending a quick message may suffice for a moment, but what interconnects us as humans is our ability to talk, share, and think in meaningful discussions.
Transitioning to school life: Faith, Family, and Friends can connect us to a bigger story; a community. I am proud to see how our community has grown and transformed our values into something bigger than words on paper. As we quickly move into this new season, take the time to spend more time on the simple things in life...because we all are experiencing how life goes in the fast-lane. The images below paint a picture of the ways that students, staff, and community worked together this week at CHS!
Local Champion: Hannah Rus

Prior to entering our local competition, Hannah and W.H Reis were Grand Champions in Western Dressage at the Ohio State Fair in July.
Hannah has earned 1010 Ribbons in the past 10 yrs. with W.H Reis and phenomenal accomplishment! Away from her competitive training, Hannah bought a 2-year-old Filly named Suddenly Big League which she is currently training. Please join me in congratulating Hannah for such a great weekend and summer as she lives her purpose and passion!
CHS School Profile
If you are uncomfortable with this access, please communicate to us by Thursday, September 13, and we will not open this function inside of your son(s)/daughter(s) account.
