The Week in Reflection: 3/24

Spring Break is Here

Picture
The beauty of Spring is on the horizon. The birds are beginning to chirp, blossoms are seeking the warmth of the sun, and the weather is dawning into a new season. Welcome to the beauty of this short season in Northeast Ohio. Embrace this time, brace for the Spring showers for the April and May flowers will bloom shortly.

Living in this region, we become accustomed to the highs and lows of the weather, but there is one weather pattern we can control...our personal weather.

Every day, we walk our routines with our words, deeds, and behaviors. We, in turn, carry our own weather. Although retired, Mr. Armelli always is a perfect example of this mantra. He stood outside in the rain, snow, and sun exclaiming to ALL: It's a beautiful day!

Now, more than ever--carrying our own feelings about our autonomy, our place in this world, and connectivity to others need to rise to the surface of those things that we can control.

We are finally in Spring! We are finally at Spring Break. Personally, I am physically and mentally exhausted and looking forward to a refresh. Take time to re-energize and focus on the long and winding road that we will face as we close out the season and press on to a rest of quarter.

The Four Pillars of National Honor Society

Scholarship is characterized by a commitment to learning. A student is willing to spend the necessary time to cultivate his/ her mind in the quest for knowledge. This pillar can only be achieved through diligence and effort. Scholarship means always doing the best work possible, regardless of impending reward.

Service: The pillar of service can be reached in a variety of ways. The willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind is a quality that is essential in NHS members. As a service club, the National Honor Society is highly concerned with giving its all to the school and community at large.

Leadership: Leaders take the initiative to aid others in a wholesome manner throughout their daily activities. Leaders sacrifice their personal interests in order to yield to the needs of others. Leaders need wisdom and self-confidence to affect change in all aspects of their lives. Some examples of leadership can include, but are not limited to, leading group activities in the classroom and in the community, being an officer in a club, being a primary member of the band or choir, or being the captain of a sports team.

Character: Character is what distinguishes one individual from another. It is the product of constant striving to make the right choices day after day. Students with good character demonstrate respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship in all of their actions.

During the NHS ceremony, I took a moment to recognize Vincent Schmidt who completed his first solo flight as a pilot prior to the NHS ceremony. Vincent will be soaring to new heights after graduation!

Very proud of @_vincentschmidt Tuesday after school he completed his first solo flight! He’s been getting it done in the classroom, on the field, and now in the air! @chs_dmurray @toppernation @cab_coach5 pic.twitter.com/Q6vcSMVj2f

PBIS Behavior Expectations

Picture
In an effort to promote the types of behaviors we would like to see in our school, during Topper Times, Freshman Mentoring, and Circuit periods over the past two weeks, students were engaged in lessons regarding the CHS Behavior Expectations. The expectations were created through the collaboration of the CHS PBIS team, staff, and students this school year. Below are the expectations as they align with our CHS Core Values, design courtesy of CHS students Cassie Bright, Jordan Cvelbar, Estefany Vazquez, Sadie Kuhnle, William Brooker, and Teagan Koehler: Special thanks to Ms. Mary Pat Pavicic and the entire PBIS team for their exceptional work this year.

(Kelly Misch- Contributor)

March 16, 2023 -- The Chardon Middle School and Chardon High School Science Olympiad Division B and C teams, respectively, completed a stellar 2022-23 season earlier this month, both emerging as qualifiers for the Ohio Science Olympiad state tournament on April 29 at The Ohio State University. Congratulations to all team members; head coaches Emily Tusick and Gordon Burgess; and assistant coaches and parent volunteers on this outstanding achievement!

The Division B and C teams placed second and seventh, respectively, at the Northeastern Region 1 regional contest held March 4 at Baldwin Wallace University. Twenty-three individual medals were earned in all by Chardon — 18 by Division B and five by Division C. [See Individual Medal listing below.]

This year’s state qualifications build on a long-standing tradition of success for Chardon Science Olympiad — with 2023 marking the 27th consecutive year and 25th year that Division B and Division C, respectively, will compete at the state level.

The Chardon Board of Education looks forward to recognizing the two teams’ 2022-23 achievements at a board meeting later this spring.

ACADEC Clinches 28 STATE Medals

Picture
(Kelly Misch- Contributor)

March 17, 2023 --
Chardon High School’s Academic Decathlon team impressed at the State tournament held at John Carroll University March 10-11, in all hauling 28 well-earned medals back to Hilltopper town. The 20-member team likewise shined in virtual regional contests earlier this year, garnering 26 regional medals, including 10 gold.

Chardon ACADEC operates under the dedicated leadership of Coach Allen Herner — advisor to the team since the 2010-11 school year, leading the team each and every year to State-level competition beginning with his first season aboard. In Hilltopper tag-teaming spirit, CHS science teacher Dr. Rebecca Schneider was at the helm for the team’s 2023 State tournament journey.

Coach Herner stated, “Dr. Schneider took on a substantial workload in getting our students to the State competition and advocating for them while there. I can’t imagine the event being such a success for our students without her.”

The Chardon Board of Education will recognize the Chardon Academic Decathlon team for its 2023 accomplishments during the student recognition segment of the March 20 regular board meeting scheduled for 6:30p.m. at 428 North Street (44024). The segment is towards the start of the meeting.

Congratulations ACADEC!

After Prom Important Information

Dear Senior Parents/Guardians,

My name is Marijana Benjamin, and I am the mom of a CHS senior.  I am also the chair of After Prom.  Time is going so fast in our kids’ senior year! I am inviting you to be a part of this year and get involved in their After Prom event. Join me and some other wonderful parents to plan a fun and special After Prom event just for our seniors and their guests.  We will be decorating the school, planning casino and other games, and organizing refreshments.

We need a lot of help! Here is a sign up genius where you can choose how you are willing and able to sign up. This is only for the planning, and a sign up genius for the actual event will be coming out in April.
We will begin our planning and decorating workshops on March 13th. We will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the school cafeteria up to the event. I welcome any time you are able to give to help!

It has been my privilege to be chair of After Prom for the past 6 years!  This year is extra special.  I sincerely hope that you join me in making our kids' final high school days memorable!

Sincerely,
Marijana Benjamin
