Summer Newsletter for @chardonhs

CHARDON HIGH SCHOOL

Congratulations to the 239 graduates from the Class of 2016.  Special thank you to our Commencement Speaker, Senator Capri Cafaro.  The ceremony was a great success and kicked off a well-deserved break for our students and teachers.

Track

The spring sports season finished after our Graduation.  On June 3 & 4, several members of a girl’s track team advanced to the Ohio State Track Championships.  Coach Bartley, Coach Shafer and Coach Julie Cole certainly pushed their athletes to limits that even they didn’t know they had!  We are proud to report that Denali Selant, Mikaylie Park, Rachel Lannon, and Rachel Banks represented Chardon well by finishing in the top 10 4 x 800 teams in state.  Deanna Ogrinc ran a respectable 300m hurdles in the meet and earned herself a spot in the National Competition this weekend in North Carolina.  Lastly, Rachel Banks did not disappoint.  She finished her remarkable career with a 2nd place finish in the 800 m run.  As you know, she will be continuing her academic and athletic career at Penn State University.

Leadership Camp

On Wednesday, June 15 our Leadership Camp Committee met at the HS.  This group of passionate educators worked on the agenda for our August 29th Leadership Day.  We have secured our keynote speaker, Dominique Moceanu, gold medal gymnast and are working on minor details for the event.  It was great to work with our committee of Lynn Monaco, Dawn Weaver, Holly Mihalek, Jill Carpenter, Brian Linn, Julie Kolcum, Cindy Newman, and Doug Murray.  These folks are truly excited to restore this great event and continue to develop our future leaders.  This year’s theme is based on a jigsaw puzzle.  We are all inter-connected and unable to be successful without the other pieces.  Our goal is to complete a giant puzzle and have it displayed inside the school.  Each student organization will claim one of the pieces.  It should be a great day!

Summer Reading/Newsletter

To encourage students to continue their reading through the summer and to build a common experience in literature, the English department has collaborated with the high school teachers to build upon the threads of literacy across the curriculum. The department has proactively encouraged their students to further the depths of their comprehension by reading several authors that have transformed the world through their articulate linguistics. Parents and students can access each class and reading assignment here.

OASSA
I am excited to announce that I have been elected to serve as the President of the Ohio Association of Secondary School Administrators.  In my role, I will serve as the president of our board and work our Executive Director, Ken Baker.  We set the tone for the school year and provide leadership to our association of over 400 administrators.  One of the key perks of the job is the free professional development I will be able receive and share with our administrative team.
