The foundation of over 140 years of graduates was cracked by one act that lasted less than one minute. Our staff and community were heartbroken, and numb; leaving us unsettled in our spirit. Countless heroes stood grounded and poised that day that gave us strength. In the midst of our confusion, we knew what we needed to do. We needed to be a community...we needed to see our humility...we needed to recognize our treasured stories of achievements...we needed to refocus our lens on respect, and the dignity of every person… we need to stand in optimism and nurture each other. We needed to be reminded of our values. For seven years, we have kept our eyes on our purpose and our community. As you reflect upon this, you may think about individuals inside of your circles that hurt or may be suffering from emotional or physical ailments. Just as your own capacity for handling situations vary---the person next to you is experiencing HIS/HER own story. It is so important to recognize those who might need your patience and understanding with their situation. This year, our district, like many around the country has faced the reality of lower enrollment and funding. In order to right size our district, we closed two buildings and shifted grade levels to the existing buildings. Every person within the district was impacted and had to expand their ability to live the mission of Chardon Schools. Our high school began to plan for a new 8-12 look. We knew that we had to build upon the programs that we established at the high school to help align our new grade. Within the newly established Circuit of Success, our existing FMP programs, Topper Time period, and our focus on the 4E's: Enrollment, Enlistment, Employment, and Entrepreneurship--we knew we were on the right track to develop students for life and career readiness. Our teachers worked intentionally within our curriculum to maintain our culture, climate, and educational outcomes. Just as every family has their own story, so do we at CHS as a larger family. Together, we define the paths set forth before us. We are Hilltoppers. As Hilltoppers, we climb higher than others, and model with humility our values as a beacon of hope for those that look up to us. The paths that we have faced have not been easy. There have been moments of difficulty, moments of sorrow, along with defining moments of integrity. We are not defined by a calendar date in February. We are Chardon, born and raised. Defined by consistency in action and the determination to succeed by living the truth and leading the way with dignity. Kindness resonates into every fiber of who we are. It changes us to strive towards being better, it helps us to slow down and really pay attention to who we are and what our purpose in life actually is. Program Recognition Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist. Finalists In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists are notified by mail at their home addresses that they have advanced to Finalist standing. The event which will take place in the gymnasium at Chardon High School, 151 Chardon Ave., is being organized through a partnership with Ohio Means Jobs, the Chardon Chamber of Commerce, RB Sigma Inc., and the Alliance for Working Together. The event is intended to provide seventh- through 10th-grade students a structured method network for career exploration and to allow 11th- and 12th-grade students the opportunity to network and interview for internships and jobs. "The Career Fair is the culminating activity of our district's focus on college and career pathways," Ed Klein, Chardon's assistant superintendent, said in a new release. "Students in all grade levels, and in all school buildings throughout the Chardon Local School District, will be exploring the 4 E's: Education, Employment, Enlistment, and Entrepreneurship." Taking preventative measures is your best defense against the ‘seasonal’ flu. Taking care of yourself is really important when recovering--likewise, defending yourself is just as important. Read these helpful reminders to protect you and your family. The seasonal flu outbreak usually occurs between mid-fall thru early spring. Each year a vaccine is developed to target the type of virus that is anticipated. The seasonal flu spreads mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. You can also become infected by touching something with the flu virus on it such as a doorknob, computer keypad, gym weights, classroom desk, and then touching your nose, eyes, or mouth. Everyday Steps to Protect Your Health Common sense to avoiding germs is the best approach, such as not sharing sports bottles or drinking from a friend’s glass or pop can. The Center for Disease Control [CDC] recommends the following: Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Stay away from an ill and contagious person until 24 hours after their fever has broken. Their fever should be completely gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine [i.e. Advil, Tylenol, Excedrin, etc.] Wash your hands OFTEN! Use lots of soap and scrub your hands by counting to 15 slowly before rinsing with water. If you do not have access to water, alcohol-based hand cleaners and disposable wipes [antibacterial] are effective—rub hands vigorously until hands are dry. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth—this is how the germs are spread. If you have sleep troubles, make sure that you have a quiet, relaxing bedtime routine, listen to soothing music, put clocks away, and stick to a consistent schedule. Keep a journal Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a good release for otherwise pent-up emotions. Don't think about what to write — just let it happen. Write whatever comes to mind. No one else needs to read it, so don't strive for perfection in grammar or spelling. Just let your thoughts flow on paper — or computer screen. Music Listening to or playing music is a good stress reliever because it can provide a mental distraction, reduce muscle tension and decrease stress hormones. Crank up the volume and let your mind be absorbed by the music. If music isn't one of your interests, turn your attention to another hobby you enjoy, such as gardening, sewing, sketching — anything that requires you to focus on what you're doing rather than what you think you should be doing. Seek counseling If new stressors are challenging your ability to cope or if self-care measures just aren't relieving your stress, you may need to look for reinforcements in the form of therapy or counseling. Shadow Day is a chance for future women engineers to shadow an engineering student at the University of Akron for the day. It is a great way for young women to get a taste of what college life is all about. Last year we had over 40 students participate and it was a huge success. This event is hosted by The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Chapter at The University of Akron. SWE has been promoting diversity in the engineering field since 1960. Being SWE affiliated we are only accepting young women who are interested in engineering majors to be shadows. The event will be on Wednesday, April 3. High Schoolers will need to arrive at 7:45 am. Fill out all of your information there! You will also need to fill out all of your forms on FinalForms, and have a hard copy of a physical turned into the athletic office by March 4. If you have already done final forms for a previous sport or activity this school year, you just need to add spring track and make any necessary changes or updates. Closing![]() I missed you all. This past week provided me with the opportunity to reflect upon many things. I am so proud of all of the work that ALL of our Circuit teachers put into our presentation. The entire process of planning, meeting, and training students for numerous leadership experiences expanded all of our leadership. The Redesigning for Student Success Conference opened our eyes to many truths: 1. We have a very good schedule 2. Brain breaks are not a trend. They are rich in research and evidence-based models. 3. Creating a system of student choice towards learning competencies (UDL) works. 4. Creating houses or advisories (like our Topper Time) builds relationships and student efficacy. 4. Relationships, Culture, Core Values, and Mission-driven goals change school climate for the better. We received just as much as we gave to this conference. I am very proud of our students, and teachers who presented on Friday. We have already received 5 emails and 137 hits to our Circuit tab on our website from last week. The patrons of our presentation shared that Chardon High School is doing amazing work! I have brought my refreshed energy at full throttle this week. This conference confirmed with me that we are on the right track with not only our schedule and programs, but our mission, vision, and core values. We often try to compare ourselves with other districts. As we work towards being the best academically, athletically, emotionally, socially, and service-oriented-- my commitment to you is that our work will be not overshadowed by others. We will be the beacon school that people want to emulate in all of our programs and systems. The Circuit of Success Goes NationalAl Herner, Jill Carpenter, Holly Mihalek, and Rob Mizen joined Mr. Higham and I at the Redesigning Schools National Conference at High Tech High in San Diego, California. We were accompanied by (4) 8th-grade students to co-facilitate the presentation over two days: Maysen and Alexis Jahnke, Faith Kilfoyle, and Sydney Murray. We toured High Tech Middle and High School. This school was featured in the film, Most Likely to Succeed. We have been planning our presentation over the last several months and ran a rehearsal last weekend at Chardon High School. This important college admissions assessment is a great tool to help guide our students in their future decisions and is in line with our district goal to see all of our students Employed, Enrolled, Enlisted, or Entrepreneurs. All Juniors are required to report to Chardon High School on February 26th at the regular start time (7:26 AM). Pre-Administration and testing will begin promptly at 7:35 AM. This has become a very popular tradition in the yearbook. Over the years, the support of parents like you helps us to keep the price of the yearbook constant despite the demand to meet rising production costs. Enclosed here you will find a form indicating the size options of congratulatory advertisements that are available. Start searching for your son’s or daughter’s most memorable baby pictures to preserve in the yearbook forever. You can put a poem, a message, and/or photos (old or new) in your salute. All you have to do is submit the information you would like included. Then we take care of the rest and design the advertisement for you. Students in the CHS Ski/Snowboard Club have been having an awesome time on the slopes of Brandywine Ski Resort. This past week was their third trip of the season. Each week the students have the opportunity to take a lesson and then enjoy several hours on the slopes. Many of the students have learned a new sport and really shown improvement in their skills. Others have been enjoying the terrain park and working to learn new tricks or jumps. What a great group of students! The Ski/Snowboard Club is excited to announce a day trip to Holiday Valley Ski Resort in New York. The trip is planned for Saturday, March 2 and is open to all students at the high school. Students do NOT have to currently be part of the ski club to participate in this opportunity. If your son/daughter is interested please see the attached flyer for more details, including an overview of the itinerary for the day. The Dance Team Head to ClevelandThe Chardon High School Dance Team is performing Friday, March 8th at Quicken Loans Arena at the Lake Erie Monsters Game. American Graduate InitiativeThe Chardon Local School District is a representative on the American Graduate: Getting to Work initiative working with other partner schools and business leaders to prepare students for high-demand career opportunities. As the initiative reaches its mid-point, the task force is hoping to hear from young adults (age 16-26) in our community about their perceptions of high-demand living wage careers and the American Graduate initiative. This is a nationwide survey that 16 other American Graduate states are gathering input from students (target audience 16-26) as well. Below is a link to a voluntary survey that is being conducted by the American Graduate Initiative on this topic. If you like your child to share his/her views on high-demand careers, please have them complete the survey. Again, participation is completely voluntary, but will assist the group in planning further activities and programs to help link graduates to competitive jobs. Everyone knows how much I love our students and staff. Being away has provided me with the opportunity to grow as a person and educator. Being together with students and staff in San Diego has created wonderful memories that we will share with our school upon our return. The weather here was quite comical. It reminded us Forrest Gump during the rain scenes. I am forever grateful to Ryan Bandiera who worked so hard lead our building under crazy weather conditions as well...I saw the landscape of leaks and game cancellations. So much has transpired while I (along with Al Herner, Doug Higham, Corine Casalina, Josi Culliton, Linda Elegante, and Steve Kofol) traveled to Mentor for three days to become Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt trained for our district. Between special appearances, conferences, theatrical experiences, curriculum presentations, vaping seminar, athletic games, and preparing for our Circuit presentation---a ton was going on. Enclosed you will read highlights from the week. A Chance of LifetimeAll of our girls who play basketball in grades 7-12 had a chance of a lifetime on Monday. Chardon High School welcomed Tamika Catchings - one of the WNBA’s all-time greats: WNBA champ, WNBA MVP, a national champion at Tennessee, and national speaker. Tamika spoke to the young ladies about handling adversity, writing your own story, dictating your own outcome in life. The message that really hit the coaching staff was when she told the girls “you’re going to be in this spot one day. Talking to a group of young girls. It may not be as a WNBA player - but it may be as a lawyer, doctor, teacher, coach, etc. You have to work hard to make sure that story is a good one for that young lady who is listening.” It was a memorable experience beyond basketball and the entire staff is so thankful for all who helped make this afternoon possible! The choir performed at EJ Thomas Hall in front of other chamber choirs as well as esteemed guest clinicians Dr. Jerry Blackstone from the University of Michigan, and Dr. Bucoy-Calavan from the University of Akron. The ensemble was one of six high schools invited to participate. Other notable high schools included Hudson HS and Akron fine art's magnet Firestone HS. The ensemble had a beautiful performance and really enjoyed being in such a fantastic hall for music making. Congratulations to the CHS Chamber Ensemble! ELA in ACTion Launched in 1981, Great Lakes Theater's in-school residency program is now one of the most successful artist-in-residence programs in the country. Each year over 16,000 students in over 100 schools experience the pleasure, power, and relevance of classic literature brought to life right in their own classrooms. Using an interactive, hands on approach, a team of specially trained actor-teachers visited CHS for five consecutive days bringing the curriculum into action. The actors brought scripts, props, and costumes to turn the students into an acting troupe, exploring classic literature from an actor's point of view. It was an unbelievable week of students breaking out of their shell to magically bring the words on paper into live action. The Learning CenterThe Learning Center Newsletter for February is attached. CHS Academic DecathlonThe CHS Academic Decathlon team traveled to Willoughby South High School on Saturday, January 26th for regional competition. Despite sickness and two members trying to do double duty and get to a swim meet, they persevered and brought home 15 medals in the various subjects. Congratulations! Hard work does pay off. ICYMI: The Circuit of Success Goes National | Next week, Al Herner, Jill Carpenter, Holly Mihalek, and Rob Mizen will join me and Mr. Higham to attend and present at a National Conference. We will be taking (4) 8th-grade students to attend and co-facilitate the presentation over two days: Maysen and Alexis Jahnke, Faith Kilfoyle, and Sydney Murray. We will also visit High Tech High. This school was featured in the film, Most Likely to Succeed. We have been planning our presentation over the last few weeks and will be meeting after school twice a week until our presentation. We are planning on presenting a dry run rehearsal on Sunday, February 10 at 1:00 PM at Chardon High School that is open to our school community. All are welcome. Just a warning, it is going to be an active presentation with guest involvement to experience our circuits. We will keep posted from San Diego. Night at the Races: THANK YOU
The Chardon Athletic Boosters supports all Chardon Middle School and Chardon High School interscholastic sports teams and the football and basketball cheerleaders; helps improve sports equipment and facilities; works cooperatively with other extracurricular support groups, and strives to become a community forum to encourage cooperation, good ideas, and constructive contributions for the general improvement of athletics.
