The Week in Reflection: 3/17

Picture
Happy Friday! Happy St. Patrick's Day! As we enter the 4th quarter of the school year, let us remember the words of the great Irish poet, W.B. Yeats: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." The options are easy for students, choose to light your own fire with your academic routines, or allow parents, teachers, counselors, and admin light it on our terms. At this point in high school, students choosing the right response plays a significant role in the their growth and maturity. We have seen a ton of growth from our students this year, and closing out the last quarter is mission critical. There are not only the in-class standards, but great opportunities to make significant strides in the Ohio State Tests, while making great memories as a class! You don't need the luck of the Irish, just some good old hard work and focus. We know that we all can finish strong!

2023 Senior Handbook

Dear Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2023,

Congratulations to the Class of 2023. In a few short months your son/daughter will be an Alumni of Chardon High School.  Staff members are diligently preparing for the 150th Commencement Exercise on May 27, 2023.

In an effort to communicate the responsibilities of this solemn event, we have enclosed the necessary information for every graduating senior and their families in this booklet.

The graduation booklet contains all instructions, deadlines and expectations that our students must follow in order to meet the requirements of graduation.  It is essential that the senior class maintain the level of maturity and responsibility they have shown this past school year.

Please review this information with your child and help us emphasize the importance of setting a positive legacy for the Class of 2023. Please know how much we appreciate your flexibility, and patience as we plan and create meaningful experiences for your children.

The Addams Family

I had the opportunity to see the Addams Family on opening night. I was so impressed along with countless in the crowd seeing our students shine on the stage. We have such a talented group of students who have been challenged and enriched by generations of Hilltopper musical directors. All parts of our cast, and crew worked as a team to put on a show for the Chardon community. I am so proud of their work and attention to detail. Check out the details below for more information regarding the show.

"They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're all together ooky... the Addams Family!"  Adapted from Charles Addams' cartoons, The Addams Family features the Addams, a rather eccentric family with a taste for all things gothic, as they receive some very shocking news; their daughter is in love... with someone NORMAL!  The play kicks off with the Addams inviting the Beinekes over for dinner after Wednesday Addams, a gothic and odd young teen, and Lucas Beineke, a young teen crazy about Wednesday, fall in love. The families are certainly in for an interesting night, complete with a seemingly fun little game after dinner. What could go wrong?  Will the Addams be angry when they find out a member of the Beinekes, the normal and bland family from Ohio, has proposed to a member of their family?  What hidden secrets will be revealed?  Come join the Chardon High School Drama Program for a night of fun, music, and laughter to find out!

Free Harmony performs at Mentor Show Choir Festival:

On Saturday, March 11th, 2023, Free Harmony, Chardon High School's show choir performed at the Mentor Show Choir Festival.  The event presented ensembles from Mayfield, Madison, Mentor, and Chardon.  It was great to be back at the Mentor festival for the first time since the outset of COVID.  Free Harmony presented pieces from their Broadway spring set, inspired by our trip to NYC.  We opened with the theme from the show "Hair", sang "Magic to Do" from Pippin, "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from Mary Poppins, and closed with uplifting songs Raise You Up and Just Be from the Cindy Lauper musical Kinky Boots.  Free Harmony presented an energetic and inspiring performance!

Matt Gittins - Class of 2015 - Choir Guest Speaker

Picture
On Tuesday, March 14th, Chorale and Treble Choir welcomed 2015 CHS alumni Matt Gittins to speak about perspectives of working as an actor and life in NYC.  After graduation, Matt attended Otterbein University where he study Musical Theater.  While at Otterbein, Matt composed an original musical titled "You Go On", reflecting on the friendships and trauma after the Chardon HS shooting.  After completing his degree at Otterbein, Matt moved to NYC until COVID.  Matt is a member of the Actors Equity Union and works actively as an actor, musician, composer, conductor, and teacher.  Matt is currently serving on our CHS Drama staff as the pit director for our spring musical "The Addams Family".

The CHS Choirs will be traveling to NYC March 23rd-26th.  Matt's visit and discussion laid the groundwork for our time together in NYC and can serve as a source of inspiration for career options or to broaden one's understanding of life in the performing arts.  The students asked great questions which stimulated a relevant discussion about NYC and the career of an actor.  A huge thank you to Matt for his willingness to share with our CHS students!

Model UN - Spring Conference

Picture
Great job goes to Skylar Duval-Lewis and Teagan Sprague for finishing off the Model United Nations Season strong at the 2023 Cleveland Council on World Affairs Model United Nations Conference on March 8-9 at Case Western Reserve University.  Skylar and Teagan were delegates negotiating in the COP27 (Climate Change) Committee representing Belgium.  Congratulations on all of your dedication this year!

Chardon Boys Volleyball Win!

It took 5 sets and nearly three hours for the first ever victory in team history! Congratulations to the coaches, players, and families who packed the McGarry Gym in Munson Township for the first ever victory. If you want to watch some boys in action, come to game. The atmosphere is something else.
