9/26/2022 The Week in Reflection: 9/30
Opening: Choose Your Response![]()
This week was another opportunity to grow at Chardon High School. It is hard to believe that we are rounding third and heading home at the end of a quarter. We have accomplished many tasks since the start of school and we are just three weeks away from the end of the quarter.
We have experienced such a change in the weather since Fall entered! We went from 90 degrees to 50 degrees with torrential downpours over 5 days! I hope that this is not a preview of what's to come! As much as we wish we could push a remote control to change the weather, there is no such device. Our friends impacted by Hurricane Ian are certainly in our thoughts during this devastating change in the weather. There are times where we all wish we could control the weather. The one thing that we learn over time is to prepare for, and choose our response to the weather. Choosing our response to the events that we face in life is even more important that choosing our response to the weather. Our choices are one thing that we can control. Our actions emulate our choices, and our character defines our lives. This mantra helps define our purpose. I am a big advocate of empowering students, and adults all of the time. One of the biggest questions that our children asked at an early age was "why!?" Why does this happen, Why does this do that, or Why are we going here...to a simple-- why does why, why! Asking probing questions enhances our curiosity throughout life. Many years ago, you chose Chardon as a place to live. You valued the beauty, community, safety, opportunity, and education. There are many other factors that played a role in your decision to choose Chardon Schools, and you entrust us in preparing your children for college, career, and life readiness. We are at the dawn of the first finish line. Take the time to discuss where your son(s)/daughter(s) are during the first quarter, and the ways that we can continue to support their learning. Our teachers are committed to serve, assist, and guide your children in any way possible. Make sure to reach out to them if you ever need anything. The more they know--the better that they can respond. Chardon High School Profile
Each year our district works on an addendum to the district report card. This profile tells the story of our school narrative that the report card doesn't go into. Check out some of the key details noted inside of this document.
College Success Award![]()
We are proud to announce that Chardon High School has received GreatSchools.org’s 2022 College Success Award!
Chardon High School is one of 1,742 public high schools in 25 states to be honored with an annual College Success Award, which recognizes and celebrates high schools like ours that demonstrate excellence in ensuring students are prepared to succeed in college. Now in its fifth year, the College Success Award is based on data that show how our school prepares students to succeed after high school, including whether they enroll in college, are ready for college-level coursework, and persist into their second year. We applaud the hard work of the entire Chardon community — including students, parents, teachers, and others that aspire to help our students succeed in college and beyond. The Schedule for Next Week

AP Test Information
AP Exam Information:
AP Exam Registration for students taking AP Courses will begin in October. These fees and deadlines are set by CollegeBoard. In order for an exam to be ordered for your child, the $97 AP Exam fee MUST be paid prior to the registration deadline. (Nov 11th) Your child will be notified when fees have been added to your Infinite Campus account. Information will also be sent out via email and the Week in Reflection to parents. Any student that cancels or orders an exam after Nov. 15 will be charged a $40/exam fee. AP Exam testing will occur during the first 2 weeks of May. 2023 AP Exam Fees and Fee Reduction
Any student that qualifies for Free or Reduced Lunch will have their AP Exam fees waived. If you have not completed the FRL application to see if you qualify, please do so within your Infinite Campus account. https://www.chardonschools.org/FoodService.aspx PSAT/Pre-ACT: October 12
On Wednesday, October 12th, all Sophomore and Junior students will be taking a practice version of a college entrance exam with the intent of giving your son or daughter the opportunity to experience a timed, national test. The results of these assessments will provide you with content-specific information on areas to improve prior to taking the actual test.
Testing will begin promptly at 7:35 AM (which results in no late-start on this morning for these students). Students need to plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to locate their testing location and to be prepared to take the test. All Juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT. This is a practice test for the SAT, an entrance exam that many colleges utilize to assess a potential student’s academic strengths and readiness for college. This test also has a scholarship component through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Juniors who score in the highest percentiles may be given the opportunity to advance in this scholarship program. The results from the test can be used to determine if students are currently on track for college-level coursework and offer an interest inventory that gives students some additional tools to use when determining a future career. *11th grade students attending Auburn Career Center or who have in-person classes through CCP are excused from the exam and should plan on attending their career program. All Sophomores will be taking the PreACT. Another practice assessment, the PreACT simulates the ACT testing experience within a shorter test window on all four ACT test subjects: English, Math, Reading, and Science. This test, geared toward 10th-grade students, can be used to predict future success on the ACT and offers an interest inventory that also provides students with a personalized view of interests and college and career alignment. Both tests give students the opportunity to opt into college and scholarship search programs by providing their address and email address during registration. Students should come prepared with an email address where they would like to receive notifications (if they would like to opt into this service), as well as #2 pencils and a calculator for test day. Any questions or concerns about the test can be directed to Timothy Hurlbut (timothy.hurlbut@chardonschools.org). PSAT Practice Test Preparing for the Pre-ACT October 12: PSAT/Pre-ACT Schedule Testing 7:20 AM-11:25 AM; Classes commence 12:05 PM-2:25 PM (adjusted schedule)

The Week in Reflection: 9/23
The Beauty of Fall
The Autumnal Equinox fell on September 22. Fall is a time that generates so much beauty in Northeast Ohio. We had such a beautiful summer, and we are longing for a wonderful fall. We have officially entered fall, and soon the wind will change and leaves will boom with color. Just as the meteorological season has quite a story...so do we.
Life is full of opportunities. These moments come and go and we have to ask ourselves --do we ever seize the opportunities? More than ever, we have to take the time to seize opportunities before they are taken away. Autumn is an opportunity to pause and reflect on all of our blessings that surround us. It an opportunity to give thanks, and it an opportunity to prepare for the "weather" whether we want to or not.
How has the first full month been for you? Are you still on track for your goals? Have you built the capacity for success? Questions like this are meant to make you pause. Whether you are a parent, student, or teacher reading this---you might have to reflect on your purpose and your place in the story. Without a doubt, the last three weeks have been an adjustment for all of us with the new routines.
In school, we have bells to create start and end times--but the fluidity of life constantly flows for parents, teachers, and students. I have lived inside of bells my whole life- but, what matters most to my story is how I spend my time between the bells; more importantly, how I spend my time with the priorities that I have established. Time is inevitable- how we use it matters so much in every quarter--especially the first quarter.
Students, many of you are on point. You have adapted and created new habits along the way. Take this Autumn to refine, re-fuel and re-set timelines and priorities toward those areas in your life that are not only strengths but also your weaknesses. Make the time to refine one area of your life that you want to be more successful in...the quarter ends next month. Look in the mirror and see your beauty and share your gifts in and out of the classroom. Live your Purpose!
Parents, you sacrifice so much for your children. As they grow older, many of them develop both a natural and unnatural independence. Take this Autumn to remind your children of their self-worth, and your unconditional love for them. They need you more than ever in this everchanging world.
Teachers, you are the extensions of the family. You spend so much time with students helping them along their journey. Take this Autumn to build your self-efficacy. Many times more than not, you are the catalyst that can change a child's world. Keep up your great work and take time for yourself! WE APPRECIATE YOU!

Homecoming Success!
I wanted to take a moment to thank our Executive Student Council, Members at Large, Mrs. Korenke, and Dan Chenoweth for all of their leadership, planning, and flawless execution of Homecoming week. Major shoutout to the Senior Executives who modeled leadership all week, and demonstrated to all grade levels what it takes from start to finish. The school was decorated beautifully and many hands came back this morning to prepare school for normal operation.
We had 730 students at our school on Saturday. From 7:00 to nearly 11:00 PM, our students had a blast on the dance floor, playing corn hole, drinking nearly 300 gallons of water, and enjoying King Kone!

National Merit Scholarship Program: Commended Students
Program Recognition
Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.
Commended Students
In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Congratulations to Mackenzie Shuman and Charlotte Herbruck for being recognized as commended students!

The Week in Reflection: 9/16
What's our Why?
For the past ten years, I have served on the administrative team in Chardon. I love every second of what I do at Chardon High School and I am deeply humbled at the direction we are moving. Every day is a new experience for us with 1,175 students and 80 staff members in the building and a new day to get better and be better. The focus on our mission is the heart of our daily decisions through a lens of our core values. We have accomplished so many extraordinary tasks that build upon and refine the treasured traditions and outcomes of being a graduate of Chardon High School. The image above is a reference to our why, our how, and what we do to accomplish our goals to assist every student to their individual purpose.
Working each day with a compass and a purpose drives the standards that we teach and the climate that we create at Chardon. We have something special here...and it didn't happen by chance nor are we going to lose it. We are a family, and a community of learners. Leadership is organic. Leadership is intentional, shared, and reciprocal. The teachers work so well together and the students share in the construction of their learning. It is hard work that truly prepares students for the 4E's that we preach: Employment, Enrollment, Enlistment, and Entrepreneurship.
Teaching is my passion. My purpose is to serve and inspire others to find theirs in any capacity that I can encounter students and staff. Our teachers encapsulate so many roles each day. They are not only licensed educators--they are counselors, caretakers, facilitators, leaders, guides, planners, collaborators, statisticians, mothers, fathers, sons, and daughters; a vessel of knowledge and experiences who serve and are often underappreciated.
As Walt Whitman wrote, "Happiness, not in another place but this place...not for another hour, but this hour." Living for today and preparing for tomorrow allows us to seize today's goals and plan for tomorrow's outcomes. It takes many hands to make this work every single day.
In the noisy world that we live in, it is important to listen, prepare, and accomplish the goals that we set forth without being swayed by the noise. When we collectively work together on our mission, values, and vision--we create the outcomes we all desire. Let's continue to stay focused on our purpose and the outcomes will be many to our shared goals.

Servant Leaders
Last Friday, students from Actively Caring for People, the Interact Club, and leadership organizations shared their learning experiences with the students from Broadmoor school. The student volunteers assisted students, talked to students, and played with children on the playground at Garfield Park.
We are so proud of the compassion, humility, and servant leadership that our students displayed during their visit. Students and staff came away with a better understanding of our their uniqueness and a greater appreciation for living life to the fullest.

"We just came from the Broadmoor Preschool picnic at Garfield Park. The Chardon student my child was paired with did an excellent job keeping my daughter occupied and safe. My daughter is 3 and she is a ball of energy. The CHS student paired with my daughter is to be commended for having a great attitude, being kind and playing with my daughter."

The U.S. Army mobile exhibit came to Chardon High School on Monday thanks to the collaboration of John Cameron Niehus and the US Army. This opportunity provided students in Physical Education, Health, and History students engaging and hands-on flight orientation simulations! Thank you to the U.S. Army for making this extraordinary event possible.

The Week in Reflection: 9/9
Love our Kids! Love our Staff! Love our Families!

I want to open this Week in Reflection with gratitude. The world in which we live in can feel disconnected, and torn at times. We can become very reactive to moments and situations each day we encounter. In a world of constant contact and pressure lives our kids who spend a third of their day with adults and peers. Our students are great, and our staff love working with your children. It is hard to reflect upon the passion, compassion, and time placed in class, and student activities...being at school from sun up to sun down allows me a comprehensive view of the lives of our students and the adults they work with. It is all about connections. It is all about trust, and it is all about generational community values and kindness.
It was awesome seeing our parents walking the halls this week during Meet the Teacher Night. It was fun to chat, and guide parents/guardians much like we do with directing students to classes. We all cherished the small moments that we had with families. Thank you for sharing your kids with us. Together, we are better. Together, we can transform today's learners into the leaders they are striving to be. This Week in Reflection is packed with tons of things our students encountered over Labor Day weekend along with preparing for the week to come.

Geauga County Fair
Earlier in the week, I asked students to share some of the awesome events, competitions, and experiences they participated in during the 200th Geauga County Fair. We have a ton of students involved in Fair Boards, 4H, and skill competitions. It was amazing walking around to see all of the great things our students participated in. Enclosed are some images that were shared with me. The recognition and awards they received were many! We are so proud of them!
Homecoming Week!
We are preparing for Homecoming at Chardon High School. Over the last two months, the Executive Student Council met and worked to plan, present, order, and create itineraries for biggest week of the school year! Why is it so big? The entire week surrounds our core value of Community. The dance is very popular and has exceptional attendance every year, but it is the purpose that matters so much more. We are quite traditional when it comes to Homecoming. We have spirit week, day to day school prizes, assemblies, homecoming court, voting, king and queen along with all of the celebrations---but, we are also celebrating the countless alumni that come home, visit the building, have reunions, head to the game, and celebrate being home! The dance is the final event to an exceptional week! The Executive Student Council worked way behind the scenes! I have to give a huge shoutout to Senior Executive President: Sydney Murray, and Senior Executive VP of Media Communications: Faith Kilfoyle, who spent every one of their free periods calling, organizing, and being so detail oriented with making this event run smoothly. We are looking forward to a week of memories! Be sure to follow the direction below for purchasing tickets.

Graduation Seals and Topper Time Manual
This manual is to best prepare all students with the use of Topper Time. It was shared with staff and students.
Topper Time is necessary part of the infrastructure of our bell schedule. With the eighth graders eating lunch during 5A, ninth graders in Freshman Mentoring, our students in grades 10-12 need a place to call home in their day. Rather than just making this place for twenty minutes to be with students, Topper Time is an opportunity for students to have a brain break, receive intervention, and to develop relationships with their teacher and other students in a small “home”. The pandemic pushed paused to deploy the Senior Capstone Projects within this time period. As we transition in 2022-2023, the redeployment of these locally defined graduation seals are essential with the Class of 2023. Below are the talking points we shared with students yesterday in Topper Time. We will continue to cover all of the Topper Times next week.

Vision

The mighty eagle is quite striking to see soaring. Their presence, eyes, and awareness makes them an indelible part of our country.
Sunday is a day where we pause and reflect on patriotism. The last several years have been very trying for all of us. Through good and difficult times we must look to the sky and see the eagle soaring and be reminded of its vision, courage, and perseverance.
It is hard to even fathom that over a generation of learners have crossed the halls across of our nation never fully experiencing our response as a country to the events of September 11, 2001. Most of us can recall where we were, and who was around us that day. As you come together this weekend with your family and friends-remember, recall, and embrace the little things in front of you...for they matter the most- family.
