It is hard to believe that we are in Homecoming Week. The amount of time, effort, and creativity that celebrates such an important time in the life of a high school student is coming together this week. We are so grateful to the Student Council Moderators, Mrs. Carrie Korenke and Mr. Chenoweth along with their remarkable student leaders for collaborating on the themes for each day! For months, the students have been planning and creating the backdrop effects for this evening. Walking the halls this week, it was great to see the students engaged in class, collaborative experiences, facilitation, working through various labs, and engaged in school spirit!
The culmination of Homecoming week is reaching the apex. Who will win from the Homecoming Court? Students will find out who is Homecoming Queen at 6:40 PM the night of the game. The king will be crowned at the Homecoming Dance.
Our Homecoming Dance provides the opportunity for students to come together as a community to celebrate our school. This dance, which is moderately formal, creates an inclusive evening for all of our students to socialize, dance, and celebrate our new king and queen of CHS.
Years of collaborative leadership between the students and staff have created norms for the evening. The core value that will be our focal point surrounds Community and Respect.
We have a treasured community at Chardon. We pride ourselves on our inclusive values and respecting self and others. Staff, Administration, and local officers will be present to provide a safe, and secure school environment. The dance is from 7-11 pm. Students will receive wristbands to indicate their recorded attendance and to work as a reminder to the students of our dance contract that they signed prior to purchasing the tickets. Likewise, our adult chaperones will be proactively visible throughout the evening for the students.
Homecoming tickets went on sale ONLINE on Monday. This determination was made by the Student Council as a way to secure the nearly $15,000 that was collected during lunches. The price of a homecoming ticket is $23.50. Mrs. Korenke and Mr. Chenoweth are very appreciative of your patience an understanding in moving into this model. They will continue to refine how this procedure can become less cumbersome for future transactions. This was a decision made collaboratively by the students and moderators. As stated earlier, students will need to sign to the terms of the dance contract at the time of purchase and anyone bringing a guest that does not attend Chardon High School will need to pick up a guest form and dance contract in student services. The dance is Saturday, September 29, from 7:00 p.m to 11:00 p.m. The homecoming king will be crowned at 10:00 p.m.
The homecoming assembly will take place in the CHS gymnasium on Friday, September 28, at 8:44 AM in the morning. Parents and families of court members may attend the assembly.
The homecoming parade is Friday, September 28th. Grades 9-12 will be creating a float and the 8th-grade student council will march in the parade. The parade starts at 6:00 p.m. and will head west on Chardon Ave., South on North St., East on Allynd Blvd. and north on Maple. The homecoming queen will be crowned at 6:40 during the football pre-game. Please join us for this exciting evening!

National Merit Scholarship Program: Commended Students
Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.
In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. In early September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To ensure that academically talented young people from all parts of the United States are included in this talent pool, Semifinalists are designated on a state-representational basis. They are the highest scoring entrants in each state. NMSC provides scholarship application materials to Semifinalists through their high schools. To be considered for a National Merit® Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements explained in the information provided to each Semifinalist. Important Message: PSAT/PreACT--October 10, 2018
To Parents/Guardians of Sophomore and Junior students:
Chardon High School will be offering a unique College and Career Readiness morning this fall. On Wednesday, October 10th, all Junior and Sophomore students will be taking a practice version of a college entrance exam with the intent of giving your son or daughter the opportunity to experience these timed test, with the pacing and the question formatting, in order to provide you with information on areas to improve prior to taking the actual test. Testing will begin promptly at 7:20 AM (which results in no late-start on this morning for these students). Students need to plan to arrive at least 10 minutes early to locate their testing location and to be prepared to take the test.
Juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT. This is a practice test for the SAT, an entrance exam that many colleges utilize to assess a potential student’s academic strengths and readiness for college. This test also has a scholarship component through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Juniors who score in the highest percentiles may be given the opportunity to advance in this scholarship program. Historically a test that we required students to register for, we chose to administer the test this year to all Juniors in an effort to enhance their opportunity to perform well in the spring on another nationally standardized test (the ACT, which will be given to all Juniors on February 26, 2019). This will also give all test-takers the opportunity to participate in the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Students were assessed the typical registration fee at the beginning of the school year for this test ($16.00- the base price), in lieu of requiring a registration process. The results from the test can be used to determine if students are currently on track for college-level coursework and offers an interest inventory that gives students some additional tools to use when determining a future career.
Sophomores will be taking the PreACT. Another practice test, the PreACT simulates the ACT testing experience within a shorter test window on all four ACT test subjects: English, math, reading and science. This test, geared toward 10th grade students, can be used to predict future success on the ACT and offers an interest inventory that also provides students with a personalized view of interests and college and career alignment. Students were assessed $12.00- the fee that is charged by ACT to score their results, at the beginning of this school year.
Guidance will be visiting with Juniors in Government in the next couple weeks to complete pre-registration materials and will be given a packet that includes a practice test with information for test day. Sophomores will be notified of what to expect and bring on test day, as well. Both tests also give students the opportunity to opt in to college and scholarship search programs by providing their address and email address, so students should come prepared with an email address where they would like to receive notifications (if they would like to opt in to this service), as well as #2 pencils and a calculator for test day. Fall: Obladi, Oblada...
The Beatles classic song, Obladi-Oblada...is quite catchy and either loved or hated by those who listen. Some say it has meaning, while others struggle to find it...yet for all, life goes on. This week we entered the Autumnal season. Just as the meteorological season has quite a story...so do we.
Life is full of opportunities. These moments come and go and do we even seize the moments? Does life go on? Autumn is an opportunity to pause and reflect on all of our blessings that surround us. It an opportunity to give thanks, and it an opportunity to prepare for the "Long and Winding Road."
How has the first month been for you? Are you still on track for your goals? Have you built the capacity for success? Questions like this are meant to make you pause. Whether you are a parent, student, or teacher reading this---you might have to reflect on your purpose and your place in the story.
In school, we have bells to create start and end times--but the fluidity of life constantly flows for parents, teachers, and students. I have lived inside of bells my whole life- but, what matters most to my story is how I spend my time between the bells; more importantly, how I spend my time with the priorities that I have established.
Students, many of you are on point. You have adapted and created new habits along the way. Take this Autumn to refine, re-fuel and re-set timelines and priorities toward those areas in your life that are not only strengths but also your weaknesses. Make the time to refine one area of your life that you want to be more successful in...the quarter ends in one month. Look in the mirror and see your beauty and share your gifts in and out of the classroom. Live your Purpose!
Parents, you sacrifice so much for your children. As they grow older, many of them develop both a natural and unnatural independence. Take this Autumn to remind your children of their self-worth, and your unconditional love for them. They need you more than ever in this everchanging world.
Teachers, you are the extensions of the family. You spend so much time with students helping them along their journey. Take this Autumn to build your self-efficacy. Many times more than not, you are the catalyst that can change a child's world. Keep up your great work and take time for yourself! WE APPRECIATE YOU!
