12/15/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 12/15Opening Message
One of the most important parts of any day are the decisions that each of us make. Every choice can impact our lives either in a good or in a bad way, it helps shapes us to identify who we are to ourselves and to other people. This week was filled decisions. I was able to observe eight lessons this week! I might have written 300,000 words this week, so bare with me.
What was most enjoyable this week was watching the students share what they learned in class during the various breakout sessions of the lessons. In the middle of the week we had a an adjusted schedule for testing. We are very grateful for the students and staff members who worked to prepare for this huge day, and how serious our students were throughout the testing time. The attention to detail was noted and appreciated! Even in the last hour before we closed out the regular schedule prior to midterms, students were actively involved in classes. This culture was built by other devoted teachers. I am grateful, and impressed with their focus on relationships while teaching the essential goals of the lessons. Next week, we are entering our midterm schedule to end the semester. The choices that we make to prepare for these assessments will give us the confidence for next week. Allow every detail today to help you shape your attitude, effort, and approach to your life. Make the choice this weekend to express gratitude, appreciation, love, and take time to review for the upcoming midterms and finals. Schedule for Next Week

CHS Principal Podcast: STAY TUNED
Stay tuned for an awesome announcement and communication regarding Mr. Hauber's Animation submission for Pink Floyd’s '50th Anniversary of Dark Side of the Moon Animation Competition.' The animation was crafted by approximately twenty of our art students, including Mr. Hauber. They chose the song "Eclipse" to develop a frame-by-frame, hand-drawn music video. The animation comprises 721 pencil drawings, employing rotoscoping techniques derived from reference footage of one of our students playing "Eclipse" on the bass guitar. Mr. Hauber and I recorded a podcast today, the video for the animation is ready to go, but we have to wait for Pink Floyd to post it on their YouTube channel before we promote it. Stay tuned, because this one is going to be viral once it hit the Pink Floyd page.

Mrs. Yeager's STEM students spent part of the class time building earthquake-resistant towers. These towers will be placed on a shake table and will be put to the test. Not only will the towers have to endure the shake table, but they will also have to hold weight on each floor of the tower. What a very cool project!

Closing Reflection
Looking back at the myriad of words that have been recorded this semester in this weekly blog- it is easy to see the volume of amazing students that have walked the halls, fields, and unique learning environments this semester. Coming into this school year, we had so many opportunities to build off the legacy here at CHS. The students and staff have responded with dignity, and perseverance throughout a semester filled with extraordinary accomplishments. This is a perfect time of year for everyone at CHS to recharge and refocus on the simple things in life. As we transition into 2024, remind yourself of how precious time is and the people that are in your inner circle. Take time for you...and spend time with your families.
As I have shared before, Robert Frost has played a significant role in authoring the numerous decisions that I have made in my life. His writings, along with other writers- fictional, philosophical, and sacred have inspired me to find my purpose. As we close a new year, consider the hills and valleys that you have faced along with your decisions along the way. The Road Not Taken Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference As I have shared with every student, staff, and parent that I have talked to over the years---we all have a story. It is through this story that we find ourselves and live with a defined purpose. Finding our call in life has no timeline or playbook. The more we open our eyes to the beauty in us, around us, and beyond us- the more we define who we are. Parents: Cherish these moments that you have with your children. The days come and passed so quickly as you have watched your children grow. These years of high school are pivotal in the maturation of your children. Often, you may wonder, do they hear me? Do they know that I care? The answer is complicated and simple...yes. Your children hear you, need you, and love you...even when they make decisions that ask the question if they ever have heard a word that you have shared. Remember, you were in their shoes. The lines of communication are always open- and when you dial them with your love--they will hear. Students: The last four months have gone by so quickly. It doesn't matter what grade level that you are in---you have faced a lot of choices. What I love about high school is the diversity of experiences that you face throughout your years. Whether you are an eighth grader walking the halls for the first time, or you just were accepted into college--these years draw into deep memories. Cherish today, for tomorrow is never granted. Live for the simple moments in life. Unplug from data and plug into real communication with your friends and family. A snapchat message will always be there waiting; never bypass a simple embrace, hello, or opportunity to give of yourself. Staff: One of the most overlook careers in the world is the one that creates careers. Being a teacher is a sacrifice, a gift, and often a thankless job. We appreciate the gifts that our teachers provide each day at Chardon High School. We have tremendous educators that not only live their content--they teach about living. Thank you for all that you do to train the future leaders--today. As we transition into a new year, my wish for you is that of continued, hope, joy, and happiness. Enjoy this time with family and friends. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and have a joyous New Year! The Week in Reflection returns after the New Year. ~Douglas Murray, Principal

12/8/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 12/8The Opening Reflection
When you look in the mirror--what do you see? What do you feel? What do you hear?
A reflection is a mirror image of what we see on the exterior. When we look at ourselves we often see ourselves as other people describe us. Mirrors can be tricky in reflecting the mirage of another person's words. The world can be a cold place when we look in the mirror. But, does it have to be? Should it be? A mirror should reflect the beauty of our creation, our words, and our feelings. Everyone is beautiful. Everyone has value, and everyone has worth. It is up to each of us to reflect this into our own mind's eye in order to change our world, our perspective, and our outcomes--and in doing so, we change another person's world. A little bit of kindness goes a long way. That kindness lives in each of us. This time of year can be difficult for many of our students and families. Take a moment to look in the mirror to see the beauty of YOU, the beauty of your smile, the beauty of your presence, and the beauty of your impact on so many. BeYOUtiful! Chardon High School's show choir Free Harmony are always collaborating and contributing to our school and greater community! They recently hit the road to spread holiday cheer. The ensemble kicked off its season with the traditional tree lighting on Chardon Square on Thursday, November 30th. It was the warmest tree lighting in recent memory and a large crowd showed up to see the updated lighting, and new Candy Cane Lane, and to hear the festive music as they waited for Santa and Mrs. Claus to arrive.
On Monday, December 4th, and Tuesday, December 5th, the ensemble presented its 30-minute program to 8 community organizations and groups. The students started the day on Monday presenting two programs to the 4th-7th grade students at CMS. We performed for luncheons for the Chardon Rotary and the Geauga Retired Teachers Association. We were also able to visit several senior living facilities including, Holly Hill, Heather Hill, Residence of Chardon, and NDCL Senior Living. The ensemble members did a wonderful job working as a team to transition from space to space throughout the busy two days. Their festive set included "That Christmas Morning Feelin'", "The Holiday Season", "Christmas Valentine", What Will Santa Claus Say?", "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas", "Sparklejollytwinklejingley", and our traditional pieces of "Listen to the Music" and "Harmony". Free Harmony as well as the other CHS Choirs look forward to collaborating with the band in the upcoming Holiday Concert presented at Mentor Performing Arts Center (6477 Center Street, Mentor) on Sunday, December 17th at 3:00 PM. The concert is open to all! Join us for a joyous holiday experience! We are so grateful for the leadership, creativity, and passion of Mr. Streiff each day! CHS Choirs at EJ Thomas Hall
On the evening of Tuesday, December 5th, a group of 72 CHS Choir students and chaperones attended a world-class concert at EJ Thomas Hall in Akron, OH. The concert featured the King's Singers from the UK as part of the annual Tuesday Musical Association programming. This event featured the King's Singers vocal ensemble which has been presenting concerts for around the last 45 years. The ensemble presents a refined vocal sound with a clear tone and beautiful harmonies. Each of the 6 singers is very talented in its own right, but brings together great traditions of the King's Singers sound. Many thanks to the Tuesday Musical Association for sponsoring free student tickets for such a high-caliber concert offering. We were blessed to attend at no charge to the CHS singers.
The program featured a wide variety of music from traditional Christmas Carols, to several Renaissance pieces by composer William Byrd, to contemporary Christmas arrangements including the familiar Charlie Brown Christmas Tune "Christmas Time is Here". The second half of the program featured several Disney selections as they celebrate the 100th anniversary of Disney. They closed their program with Billy Joel's "And So It Goes". This was a wonderful evening for our CHS singers as they grew from hearing world-famous vocalists. Images of the Week

The Finish Line
The finish line for the semester is quickly approaching. It is quite amazing to reflect on how fast the second quarter came to closure. December 20th marks the midpoint of the year...how have you used the time that you were given? We had such a strong start to the year across each grade level! Take the proper time that you need to talk to your children about where they are socially, emotionally, and academically. This time of year is experienced differently by all students and families. As much as academic achievement is important--so is the well-being of all of our children. Our students know that they have excellent educators that care for their every need, but the extension of school is secondary to the root of the needs that children need at home. As much as we ask our children to be present at school while at school...it is just as important for each of us as parents to be present while our children are present. The one variable that we cannot change is time. Take the time this weekend to be present to your children and remind them how much you support and love them.
Have a beautiful weekend with your family and friends! Douglas Murray, Principal 12/1/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 12/1Tis the Season
It is hard to believe that we celebrated Thanksgiving last week. As we transitioned back to school on Monday, the Lake Erie snow machine turned on blanketing the area through the night and into Tuesday providing a snow day this week. Huge shoutout to our maintenance and custodial teams for clearing all the snow for school on Wednesday.
Just as preparing for a snowstorm is important, preparing for the end of the quarter is very important as we close out the semester. Over the last two weeks, I have met with each grade level to best prepare our students for their educational success planning. Oftentimes, the holiday season can deploy so many emotions as the weather changes, and the end of the semester comes along: the excitement, the beauty, the new beginnings, and the stress. Our response to the season often can act as an amalgamation of all of these feelings all at one time. So, how can you take time this December to prepare and calibrate for the season? Excitement: Recall the emotions that you had as a child. You were filled with wonder and awe. Life was very simple in your eyes and everything was pure. These feelings remind us that this time of year is about spending time in the comfort of family and friends while celebrating traditions. Recreate these traditions with your family and celebrate each other. Your time together is so precious. As a child, we cherished these moments. Our children need traditions and memories to pass on these celebrations with their families someday. Stop for a moment to reflect on how quickly your time has come and gone with your children. These moments can never be replicated. We all need to pause and be reminded that certain things at work can wait in order for us to celebrate our children. Beauty: This season is filled with beauty in Ohio. Yes, not all of us love snow. Yet, we cannot ignore its glory around us throughout this season. We know that our lives do not surround the obvious plot twists on the Hallmark channel, but we can pause to see the beauty in the simple things of life. I preach all of the time that we all have a story and together our stories make our community. Take time this month to create new habits for yourself, or even break some tough ones. One of the hardest tasks that dwell deep inside of humanity is being at peace with yourself. As hard as it can be---reduce the noise around you to see the beauty in you. Your life is a gift to be shared and nourished. Take time for yourself to breathe, slow down, and live in the moment. New Beginnings: Celebrate your relationships. This is nothing new to your vocabulary. Many people are uncomfortable this time of year because of failed relationships, mourning, and hardships. Many of us have a hard time letting go of the past, feelings, and tough memories. How will you ever grow? Will you run from it or learn becomes of it? Seize every positive moment as an opportunity to expand your humility and every difficult moment as an opportunity to expand your territory and influence. Life is too short to hold on to the past as an ornament. Rather, seize the moment and polish your choices from it. Stress: Without a doubt, this time of year can cause stress. A simple example is to look at our mothers and spouses this time of year. They are stressed because they want everything to be perfect. That's all fine, but if you want your mother or spouse to experience fully the above stated---HELP THEM. This time of year is not to be burdened on the shoulders of one. It is an opportunity to show our love to those that care for us. Besides the stress that our families have during this season, we have our own personal stress. Students have the stress of exams, finals, and projects on top of their job and athletics. Of course, our children love to schedule (without telling us) social gatherings with their friends. Students, take time to check your phone in at the door and converse with your family. The latest post on Snapchat or Tik Tok is certainly not as important as talking to a human face-to-face. Likewise, this time of year is a stressful time for staff as they attempt to do all of the above: preserving the excitement with their families, seeing the beauty in themselves, creating new beginnings, and grading all of their exams and projects. I am grateful to each of them as they work together to create new routines in new places while serving our mission. With the time constraints of my job, it is so important that I practice what I preach. The students and staff know that they are an extension of my family...but my faith, family, and friends are mission-critical to the daily energy and tasks asked of me as one of the building leaders. Be the best version of yourself to those that matter most and live today with a focus on tomorrow. Screen Time: Recalibrating with Intention
I may not be an eye expert, but I've realized that spending too much time in front of screens can affect my eyes. We've been in the Chromebook Era for over 9 years now, and it's hard to imagine the time Before Chromebooks (BCE) when it comes to academics. These devices have completely transformed education, allowing students and staff to do everything needed for teaching and learning. They're incredible tools that support the learning process, especially since we use Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets, making school more synchronous with instant feedback. Being a 1:1 school has many benefits, but it also comes with the responsibility of teaching digital citizenship and promoting appropriate screen time. Monitoring screen time is crucial.
During the snow day, I checked to see how many students were active online. Throughout the day, we had a peak of 605 users on their Chromebooks. Most students were in Google Classroom, Google Docs, textbooks, and using school resources. It was great to see so many students staying actively engaged on that day. However, it's equally important to slow down screen time when it's not necessary. In our classrooms, we have phone holders, and almost every teacher uses them every period. This has increased attention, dialogue, and engagement. We all need technology throughout our day, but this message is a good reminder for both us and our children to take a break, decompress from screen time, and let our eyes relax. Closing Message : A message for our students
This is an email that I sent to all students yesterday.
We are rounding another milestone of the school year. We just have a few regular school weeks left before we head into the midterm schedule. I have spent much of the last two days working with students. One of the experiences that I enjoy is counseling and advising students. With all of the emotions that we face as students (and staff) outside of the hours of the school day, we often see you and greet you when you are most tired, and lethargic at 7:15 am. Let's be real, mornings are tough for most of us and we are all feeling stressed. Even for the adults that get to school really early--we all need our internal engines to start...and we all have a story that we are bringing to school. This time of year can impact us differently without us even knowing it. The hustle of school, activities, and the holidays can catch us when we are not ready. What is really important is prioritizing the little things, writing things down, and doing what we can with the time we are given--in school, in class, and with the responsibilities that we all face. Always know that you are surrounded by people who care for you and want you to be the most successful that you can be at CHS. It is important to seek out help from your teachers for anything: missing assignments, absences, struggle with understanding, not having the energy, or just having someone to listen to you. Your counselors, coaches, staff, and administrators will make the time to be present for your needs. You just need to ask, or have someone ask for you. We care for you more than you can understand. Take a few moments to reflect on these words, do a little self-reflection internally, and take a deep breath. One step at a time, one moment at a time, and one day at a time. Together, and that's the key word--TOGETHER--we will transcend as Hilltoppers. Oftentimes, I feel that I write to just my internal self since I never know who is reading these emails. It only takes one person to make another feel better in the present moment. With that mantra in my head, I wish you a good night and an even better tomorrow. You are loved! -Murray |
