The Week in Reflection: 5/21

Picture
It is so exciting to be a Hilltopper! This week was filled with so many events academically, athletically, and within the many extra-curricular experiences that we offer. The senior class has finally finished all of their exams and now they are waiting for their special day.  The weather has been beautiful and our students have been actively involved in outdoor labs, presentations, and ceremonies.  This Week in Reflection is filled with important dates, events, and details for each grade level to understand as we begin to close out the rest of the year. Pay close attention to the details that apply to you.

Senior Awards: May 20, 2021

On Thursday, May 20th, we were able to celebrate the seniors during our annual awards ceremony. Last year, we celebrated this event online. We are so grateful to be able to share this night with our families in person. Many thanks to our counselors, and secretaries who worked to arrange this day with our community members, staff, students, and families. The night was filled with warmth and gratitude!

May 18, 2021: Chardon High School Military and Athletic Signings

* All students and guest wore masks until the picture
Chardon High School recognized several athletic and military signings this week in person. Throughout the year, many families took the banners home and created signings in their houses. With some of the recent adjustments to health orders from April, we have been able to create more in-person ceremonies.

Big Ideas for the Week

A Guide to Senior Events

Picture
Senior Handbook
Key ideas noted below. It is very important to read the senior handbook, we receive calls daily that are inside of this document. We will review key parts of this with seniors at graduation practice.

Baccalaureate
Baccalaureate services are by definition religious in nature.  Designed by graduates, this ceremony is a non-denominational religious service at a local Chardon church.  This voluntary activity will be held Thursday, May 27, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. at the Chardon United Methodist Church, 515 North Street, Chardon, Ohio.

Graduation Rehearsal

Because commencement exercises are conducted in a formal, ceremonial fashion, it is mandatory that all seniors be in attendance for rehearsal.
*Seniors who do not attend rehearsal will not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony.  Rehearsal is scheduled on Friday, May 28, 2021, at Chardon Memorial Field beginning at 10:00 am.

Senior Picnic at Munson Township Park on Friday, May 28 from 12:30-3:00.

Graduation Exercises

Graduation exercises will be held at Chardon Memorial Field on Saturday May 29, at 7:30 p.m.  Each graduating senior will receive eight tickets to be issued at commencement practice on Friday, May 28, 2021.  It will be up to you or your senior to reach out to other students/parents if you are in need of extra tickets beyond the original eight tickets.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Credit

Seniors are reminded that it is necessary to pass the last nine weeks and/or the final exam plus have a passing average in a course to receive credit.  Failure to meet these requirements in courses required for graduation will result in being ineligible for a diploma in May.  Students will not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony.  Further clarification is found on page 109 of the Student Handbook

Delinquent Obligations
Because all students are expected to meet their responsibilities and obligations as members of our school, seniors are reminded that all deficiencies and/or delinquent obligations (i.e. required credits, class work, fees, library fines, activity fees, textbooks, detentions, suspensions, etc.) are to be taken care of prior to the commencement practice.  Students will not be permitted to participate in commencement unless all obligations have been met.

Reminder of Fee Letter

Seniors and Transcripts

If you are planning on attending a college or trade school please do not forget to request your final transcript on Naviance. This will notify CHS where to send your Final Transcript that is needed to enroll in the secondary school you plan to attend in the fall. To do this follow these steps:

1. Go to https://www.naviance.com/ and log in
2. Click the tab "Colleges I'm Applying to"
3. Scroll to the bottom of the page to "College that I'm Attending"
4. Click the arrow and find the college you are attending and click it
5. Press the update button once your college is listed as the college you are attending.
6. We will send your Transcript to your college once they are finalized, and we review that all fees have been paid for.

School Fees for all Grade Levels

As we transition to the last few weeks of the school year, it is important that parents/guardians review any outstanding school fees prior to the end of the year. I appreciate you going through Infinite Campus and administering payments throughout the year.  Every year that fees are not addressed they can add up to a fee total that can be overbearing. By the end of the senior year,  the district must close out all fees that are remaining. Please review any outstanding fees and make payment by the end of the school year for grades 8-11. Senior parents will receive a personalized communication to close out the year prior to graduation practice.

Chardon High School can hold transcripts upon graduation to a post secondary institution for non-payment of fees, and will begin to do so in the 2021 school year.

Please review the statement and continue to use Infinite Campus to review and pay fees. If you need access to Infinite Campus, please go to the Chardon Schools website under the resources section to learn more about access information to Infinite Campus and paying fees online.

If you have questions about your invoice, please contact Erin Koehler, Chardon High School Clerk at 440-285-4057 X. 1441 or email her at erin.koehler@chardonschools.org

The Biden administration recently announced more than 30 million children will get nutrition assistance over the summer as a result of the American Rescue Plan. Under the Universal School Meals Program Act, nutrition assistance over the summer would be made permanent for all children regardless of income.

Underclass Finals Schedule

Picture
Read this schedule online
We have been meeting with teachers in post conferences along with having discussions with department chairs pertaining to final exams. We appreciate the creativity, and flexibility each department has determined for the exam process. Enclosed are the expectations for exams this June.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT EACH STUDENT DISCUSSES THEIR FINAL COURSE EXPECTATIONS WITH THEIR TEACHERS AND PARENTS REGARDING THEIR QUARTER GRADES AND EXAM SCHEDULE.

For the 2020-2021 year, teachers in each PLC must agree/collaborate upon what could/should be the final exam.

  • Each PLC in each department may follow the model of ⅕ of the grade if a midterm was administered. The test should be collaborated upon and mirror the standards delivered. Each PLC should follow the same practice.
  • Teachers that did not administer a midterm, but have supplemented projects/assessments, should collaborate and determine what the final summative assessment should be:
    • Those assessments can be either added to 4th quarter grade, OR applied to an adjusted percentage of a final grade, OR used as a traditional ⅕ of the final.
  • Teachers may choose to not have a final assessment and apply a summative assessment to the 4th quarter and divide grades by 4 quarters.
  • Students who have earned 4 “A’s” during the four quarters will be exempt from the final for the 2020-2021 school year.
    • Departments may expand this offering to other students based upon PLC determination; ie-Students will all “B’s”, etc.
    • Students may choose to opt-in to take the exam.
  • Students who are not taking the final exam need not attend the allotted time period assigned for the exam.

Having the students from Chardon High School take such an active role in spreading awareness and fundraising for the Parkinson’s Boxing Class meant so much to the senior citizens in this class and all of us at the Geauga Department on Aging. Their enthusiasm in making a video and interviewing so many of the boxers really showed how much they cared.  Haydn, Tate, and Liam did a tremendous job putting the boxing video together, and you as their teachers & Chardon Schools should be very proud of the fine young men that they are! Being diagnosed with this progressive and degenerative disease of Parkinson’s is overwhelming.  We are so excited to offer hope through our boxing/fitness class where our seniors can fight back physically & psychologically. Having the students be a part of this boxing class was a true joy for me and I’m extremely grateful to them for their hard work and fundraising efforts.  Having them present us with two checks today in the respective amounts $1500, and $500 was an amazing surprise.  Please know how extremely grateful we all are and thank you for the wonderful life lessons you have taught through your Service Learning Class.

Gratefully,

Sandy McLeod
Senior Center Supervisor
