The Week in Reflection: 5/12

I think I can. I think I can

Picture
The Little Engine That Could is an American folktale that became widely known in the United States after publication in 1930 by Platt & Munk. The story is used to teach children the value of optimism and hard work.

One of the key lines from the book is I think I can, I think I can.

Throughout the week, this mantra crossed many of our minds at CHS. With the beautiful weather surrounding this week, the last round of AP testing, Spirit Week, Prom, After Prom, Playoffs, Senior Awards, and literally 87 make-up tests--it was a marathon. A good marathon for adults certainly has benefits, but many students and staff alike are longing for the finish line.  We will get there, but the mantra needs to change from I think I can to I know I will.

There are so many events that have either happened this week, this weekend or leading into next week that is important to read these details carefully. Make today great!

Chardon High School Students Earn National Awards For Community Service Impact

201 Unique Awards Earned

91 UNA-USA National Community Service Awards
14 Zero Hunger Awards
96 ServeOhio Community Impact Award
Chardon High School is excited to announce 96 students are being recognized by the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA), ServeOhio, and InnerView in the sixth Annual Community Service Awards.  This program, open to all U.S. students, has been designed to connect student community service activities, skill development, and commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to transform our world. The Kroger Co. is presenting the fourth annual Zero Hero Awards to students for taking action to help create communities free of hunger and waste. ServeOhio is recognizing outstanding youth volunteers addressing community needs.

“The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been a directional beacon not only for UN member states, but also for their citizens, including, and perhaps especially—their young people.  As a movement that empowers and engages Americans to support the United Nations and the SDGs, UNA-USA is thrilled to partner with InnerView once again,” says Rachel Bowen Pittman, Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the USA.  “We are thrilled to be involved with a platform that not only helps to capture the impact that young people are having, but to recognize and to celebrate their achievements.  Kudos to all those who have committed to staying the course and doing their part to help actualize the SDGs!”

"Youth voices, engagement, and insight are crucial ingredients for Ohio’s prosperous future,” said William Hall, Executive Director of ServeOhio. "We are honored to celebrate outstanding youth who reach beyond themselves to help their neighbors and communities – transforming themselves and others – which shapes who we are and who we will become as a state. Congratulations to the award recipients and thank you for your service!"

Students from Chardon High School delivered the most impact for SDG 4-Quality Education. With a collective impact of 3859 community service hours this school year, Chardon High School earned the Sapphire Award.

Graduation Rehearsal

Because commencement exercises are conducted in a formal, ceremonial fashion, it is mandatory that all seniors be in attendance for rehearsal.  *Seniors who do not attend rehearsal will not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony.  Rehearsal is scheduled on Friday, May 26, 2023, at Chardon Memorial Field beginning at 10:00 am. If it rains, we will be inside the gym for rehearsal.

Because there is so much organizing to be done to make the ceremony a positive experience, we need to have the cooperation of all students involved.

Graduation Exercises

Graduation exercises will be held at Chardon Memorial Field on Saturday May 27, at 1:00 p.m.  Each graduating senior will receive (8)eight tickets to be issued at commencement practice on Friday, May 26, 2023.

SNHS: A Message From Morghan Kuzma

Picture
I’m happy to announce that CHS now offers a new organization for science minded students who want to explore careers in science, get hands-on in-person experience, mentor underclassmen, and to give to our school community.  Chardon is starting a Chapter of Science National Honors Society.  Similar to NHS, SNHS will launch in school year 2023-2024 for current sophomores going into their junior year, and juniors going into their senior year.  SNHS candidates must have a 3.0 GPA or higher with a B average currently enrolled in an Honors or AP science class.  As a member of SNHS, we will participate in the planning of the CMS science fair, research interesting scientific current events, and learn about careers in science from guest speakers from such as a physicists, biochemists or soil ecologists. All SNHS members will be required to complete one hour of tutoring each quarter, which can also go toward NHS hour requirements.  This is an incredible opportunity to join Ohio’s second SNHS right here at CHS!  Not only will this be impressive on college applications but SNHS is a scholarship granting body, and can connect students to research opportunities in the area.  Interested in learning more?  Contact Morghan Kuzma to learn about our informational meeting!
