The Week in Reflection: 4/16

Life in the Fastlane

Picture
Life in the Fastlane.

This is probably the best phrase, song, and way to describe the past week.

Beginning with last weekend, Bob Francis and I were asked to fill in for coach to run JV Baseball. It was invigorating for Bob and I to work with the boys. They were able to see us in a different lens and we swept Aurora at Munson.

A graduate reached out to me regarding filling in last weekend and it really made me pause. Coach Goshe wrote, "see a need, fill a need." As I reflected, it reminded me of ALL of the countless ways that each of us have stepped in so support one another. Pandemic year, or not, our staff have worked intentionally to support and guide our students throughout so many unknowns this year.

Another principal (in our league) noted to me last week that we have such amazing students who are so kind and giving of themselves.

A guest to our district stated to me that our families are so thoughtful, committed, supportive, and welcoming.

Our core values have not been communicated in so many words this year, but the actions of those clear words have. It is those simple examples (from this week alone) that reminds me that taking a moment to get out of the fastlane can help each of us pause and be reminded of our purpose.

Ferris Bueller,  in the classic film,  said it best- "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” There are so many moments that have passed by, and so many moments upcoming. With all of the moving parts that connect to the end the school year-- and with the countless decisions being made on a moments notice--pause, show gratitude, and celebrate the little things inside of each moment. Don't allow your life in the fastlane --make you lose your mind.

Senior Events Update

Sent to Seniors and Families on Wednesday

I have never experienced a year that was so malleable and filled with adjustments, restrictions, and change. The amount of pivoting and flexibility has been extraordinary by our teachers, students, and families. Has it been perfect, no. What has been perfect this year? Have we been intentional, yes.

Every decision that we have made has been scrutinized and reviewed countless times by internal and external administrators at school and in our county. Throughout every decision, the focus has and always will be what is in the safest interest of the students, and follows every expectation set forth by our district and current health orders.

As I write to you today, I can now share that our prom, after prom, and graduation plans have been approved by the health commissioner and superintendent. There are so many more details that we need to plan for now that the first plan has been approved. These details will be communicated in our senior class handbook that we will publish as soon as we complete those details.

Key Dates:

Prom: Saturday, May 15, 2021 (6:00-11:00 pm) at La Vera Party Center
  • Attendees: Senior student and guest only (More details forthcoming)

After Prom: Saturday, May 15, 2021 (11:30 pm-2:30 am) at Chardon High School
  • Attendees: Senior student and guest/ or Senior student not attending prom (More details forthcoming)

Graduation: (APPROVED DATE) Saturday, May 29, 2021 (7:30 pm) at Chardon Memorial Field
  • Rain Date: (if needed) Sunday, May 30, 2021 (1:00 pm) at Chardon Memorial Field
  • Please note: Each graduate will receive (8) tickets (More details forthcoming)

We appreciate your patience, support, and thoughtfulness as we continue to work collaboratively with our students to create a meaningful closure to their high school experience. Please note that the Week in Reflection is the predominant communication sent out each Friday that is filled with weekly highlights. As we transition closer to these events, separate communications will be sent out via ConnectED.

Enclosed are the safety plans that were approved by Geauga Public Health today:

Prom                        After Prom                        Graduation

*Chardon High School will follow the most current health order and recommendations at each event.

Thank you for all that you do to support your children,

Douglas Murray, Principal

Students in Chardon High School's Forensic Science and Literary Crime Drama class are learning more than just 'whodunit' — they are learning the how, the why, and the ways technology and science are put to use in the pursuit of catching violent criminals.
Jill Carpenter, a Chardon High science teacher with a specialized interest in forensics, joined forces with her fellow teacher and friend Holly Mihalek, who teaches English and theater classes, to create a course that merged both of their disciplines. (Read More)

SOAR: (SENIORS) Student Opportunities in Aviation Repair

CRT is hosting a Co-Op for graduating seniors in the month of June. The program is titled “SOAR” – Student Opportunities in Aviation Repair. We first ran the program in June of 2019. We had planned on running the program again this past year but had to scale back based on the environment caused by Covid19. We are back on track for this year and excited to get this started again. The application process is open through next Friday, April 16th and we have room for a couple more graduates.

Here is the link for students to apply:
https://jobs.lever.co/componentrepairtechnologies/de2e9bd8-9c19-4a96-8be9-a296a5648929

This program is designed for graduates that are looking for opportunities and exposure to technical career fields. This is not designed as an alternative to college. The career paths these participants will gain exposure to are highly technical, well paid career fields and many of the folks in these career fields do obtain industry recognized credentials, Associate and Bachelor degrees while working full time.

What to Expect:
  • Four-week immersive Co-Op experience in June 2021.
  • The opportunity to earn income while exploring several manufacturing career paths such as         Machining, Non-Destructive Testing, Inspection, Welding and Industrial Maintenance.
  • An opportunity for a full-time job offer following the successful completion of the Co-Op experience.

Each week the Co-Op will spend a portion of their experience working in entry level positions on our shop floor, while also having the opportunity to shadow and learn about the four career paths listed above. In addition, we will have extra-curricular activities provided for the group where the Co-Op’s will connect with their peers and share their experiences in a fun and structured setting.

Throughout the four weeks we will provide formal, intentional soft skill training designed to help prepare the co-op for whatever career path they may choose. We will have representatives from local Community and State Colleges on hand as well to discuss blended learning programs with the group such as certificate or degree programs that can be obtained part-time while working in a full-time capacity. CRT supports a culture of continuous learning and employees who have been with the company for more than one year will be eligible for tuition reimbursement in their chosen fields.
