The Week in Reflection: 3/12

Finish Strong!

Picture
“Are we there yet? Are we there yet?” We’re all familiar with those plaintive cries from the kids in the backseat of a car. The end of the third quarter (during an entire year of this pandemic) makes each of us ask these questions.  We aren't there yet...but, things are getting better with the state of the pandemic AND the proximity of the end of the quarter...AND the recent change in the weather.

With the ebb and flow of March weather and relentless fluctuation with temperatures, some students feel that it is time to sit in the back seat and wait until they have idled through the finish line. Regardless of what grade that your son/daughter is in, the end of the third quarter on March 26th, and the beginning of the fourth quarter is the moment to finish...the moment to refine….and the moment to define who they are.

Two decades of teaching and coaching have cemented in my mind the sheer purpose of preparing for beyond the finish line. Many students and athletes look at the endpoint of a year or season as the goal. The reality is that goals are defined well before the year, and season. I wouldn’t prepare for a state title without establishing the backward design model of off-season/pre-season/in-season preparedness. Likewise, school provides us with many finish lines to pause and reflect which culminates towards the ultimate finish line at commencement.

Wherever you are plotted on the sixteen ‘quarter-markers’ along the high school experience, every stopping point is an opportunity to refine your purpose along the path. Seize this moment and make your mark this quarter!

Buckeye State

The following students were selected, by the American Legion, to participate in Buckeye State this summer: Tyler Edwards, Quentin Fedak, Sebastian Marker, Morgan Fisher, Paige Yamamoto,  and Melanie Yoger were selected by the Chardon American Legion

What is Buckeye Girls State?

Buckeye Girls State is the name given to Ohio's Girls State program, which was designed to educate Ohio's young women in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of good citizenship. By getting involved in the process, Delegates can learn more about City, County and State Government in one week than they will learn in an entire semester of high school.

The Ohio American Legion Auxiliary has been a proud sponsor of Buckeye Girls State for the past sixty-four years. The program has been honored by such organizations as Freedom's Foundation at Valley Forge and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

What is Buckeye Boys State?

American Legion Buckeye Boys State is an eight-day hands-on experience in the operation of the democratic form of government, the organization of political parties, and the relationship of one to the other in shaping Ohio government.

Founded in 1936, Buckeye Boys State is the largest Boys State program in the nation with an attendance of over 1,200 young men annually, representing nearly 600 Ohio High Schools, several on-line High Schools, and the Home Schooled Community.

The American Legion Buckeye Boys State program is sponsored by the Ohio American Legion, the largest veterans organization in the State of Ohio.

At Boys State, young men learn about city, county, and state government through a non-partisan objective education approach. The young men also form friendships which will last a lifetime! Congratulations!

Yearbook: Student Communication

Picture
Hi! Our names are Owen, Steve & Jacob; we are members of the 22-person yearbook staff headed by our adviser, Mr. Chenoweth.  You probably receive lots of school emails these days, but this one is special because it’s from us – the students who are working hard to make our school’s yearbook. We know this has been an unusual year, but we are sending you this message to let you know how excited we are about this year’s book! The 2021 yearbook will be unlike any other book, ever. It’s going to be different, but it’s going to be ours, together. We are including so many of the unique memories and stories from this year:

Going to State in multiple sports and winning the State Title in football
Filming the production Phoneheads under the direction of Mr. Streiff & Mr. Lichtinger
Virtual Homecoming Court

Imagine in 20 years, your student pulling their 2021 yearbook off the shelf and showing their kids what an unusual time in history we lived through. For everyone that has purchased a yearbook, thank you! It’s going to be the best book yet! If you haven’t purchased, it’s not too late. You can still order the book athttp://jostensyearbooks.com/?REF=A06316400. Order your student’s yearbook today to guarantee a copy.

Thank you!

Senior Tributes

The 2020-2021 yearbook staff is once again offering parents of seniors the opportunity to express congratulations to their graduate by purchasing an advertisement in the 2021 edition of the yearbook. This has become a very popular tradition in the yearbook. Over the years, the support of parents like you helps us to keep the price of the yearbook constant despite the demand to meet rising production costs.

Enclosed here you will find a form indicating the size options of congratulatory advertisements that are available. Start searching for your son’s or daughter’s most memorable baby pictures to preserve in the yearbook forever. You can put a poem, a message, and/or photos (old or new) in your salute. All you have to do is submit the information you would like included. Then we take care of the rest and design the advertisement for you.

If you are interested, fill out the next page of this order form and return it to the main office at the high school with your check payable to Chardon Board of Education. Please submit your order no later than Friday, March 19th, 2021 so that we can meet our printing deadlines. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the yearbook adviser, Daniel, at daniel.chenoweth@chardonschools.org

Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Daniel Chenoweth
