The Week in Reflection: 3/11

Spring is Coming

Picture
I am often inspired by moments. A simple smile. A picturesque view. A simple song. A good laugh with family...and seeing a community coming together to celebrate.

All of the above are moments that made me pause this week.

This time of year can create such a mad rush of closing bells towards the end of the quarter, intermittent weather patterns, busy family schedules, and the Ides of March in our own lives. It is so important to pause and reflect so that life doesn't pass us by without each of us recognizing a genuine smile, the beauty of a blue sky or slow motion snow, laughing about silly things with your loved ones, or hearing a song that causes you to slow down.

I do not need to riddle you with metaphors and analogies this week. Just reflect upon the little things that pass before you that allows you a moment to pause and be grateful.

Be our Guest!

Curtain Call

Our students move me. Our staff encapsulate the passion for extending learning outside of the classroom. My wife and I were moved by the design, sound, set, lighting, make-up, costume, music, presentation, performance and execution of the spring musical, Beauty and the Beast. Every member of the cast, crews, and directors have to be so proud of the sheer joy and exuberance of being back on the stage---singing---smiling--and being present in the moment. I love these kids, and I highly recommend taking the time to see them in the spotlight this weekend!

In case you passed over anything that I just wrote...the enchanted tale of
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is starting to grace the stage at Park Auditorium starting on March 10, 2022, when the student cast of this year’s Chardon High School spring show present the Broadway stage version of the classic story.

Beauty and the Beast involves the telling of Belle’s journey as she becomes exposed to life beyond her provincial town. She meets her father’s captor, the Beast—a cruel and terrifying creature, physically cursed by a wise enchantress. Belle feels condemned to spend her life imprisoned within the walls of the Beast’s castle—until she recognizes goodness within the monster and becomes more of an enraptured guest than a prisoner.

As this love story unfolds, audiences may enjoy all the classic, rousing, musical numbers including the selections, “Be Our Guest,” “Gaston,” and, of course, “Beauty and the Beast.” Check out the podcast that we recorded earlier in the week to highlight the show!

Chardon High School Academic Challenge Team

Picture
Picture
Chardon junior Jake Schneider and seniors Josie Aitken and Morgan Fisher traveled to downtown Cleveland and the News Channel 5 studios this week for a taping of the long-running high school quiz show Academic Challenge! CHS took on teams from Riverside and Avon Lake. We can't divulge the outcome but suffice it to say it was a fast-paced, competitive show. These three CHS students seemed to feel right at home on set engaging in lively banter between segments. Jake Schneider felt so comfortable that during one break, he asked the host if Rob Powers was his "real" name! (it is!) Both the studio audience and Mr. Powers got a kick out of Jake's quip! The show will air on May 21st on News Channel 5, so you'll have to tune in then find out who won. Adviser Mr. Allen Herner said he couldn't be more proud of the way this team represented CHS.

National Merit Finalist: Charlotte Bennett

Picture
Congratulations to senior, Charlotte Bennett, for being named a National Merit Finalist! Charlotte is interested in studying Biochemistry/ Medical Research in college. She has applied to several schools. Several of her top schools are the University of Maine, University of Vermont, Penn State University, and Lehigh University. Congratulations, Charlotte! We are so proud of you.

Program Recognition

Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.

Finalists

In February, some 15,000 Semifinalists are notified by mail at their home addresses that they have advanced to Finalist standing. High school principals are notified and provided with a certificate to present to each Finalist.

Winner Selection

All winners of Merit Scholarship® awards (Merit Scholar® designees) are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments—without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: the Finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the Finalist's own essay.

Chardon's Trailblazer: Charlotte Jons

We are extremely proud of Chardon's own pioneer, Charlotte Jons. Charlotte paved the way by herself and created this opportunity! With her family by her side, and one extremely great supporter of another brilliant mind, her mom---Charlotte made history!

Chardon Goes to the Musicals

Chardon Goes to the Musicals is excited to announce ticket sales for Disney's Frozen.   All money is due to CMS Hilltoppers PTO by Tuesday, March 15.

We are proud to promote the arts at Cleveland's own Playhouse Square, the second largest theater district outside of Broadway.  Over the years, Chardon Goes to the Musicals has sold hundreds of tickets. A reminder this is not a fundraiser, but simply a way for community members to obtain tickets at discounted prices.

AHLI Service Project

#27BeThe Change carries on into March with our AHLI students working on the annual service project! Consider ways in which you can help carry on their servant leadership!
