On Monday, February 3rd, CHS Choir students attended a concert at Severance Hall featuring the choir of St. Olaf College (Northfield, Minnesota).  The St. Olaf Choir is the finest collegiate choir in the US and has a long history of excellence in choral singing.  Among their ten concert stops during the tour, they will be performing at Carnegie Hall (NYC).  The concert was beautiful and profound.  Our students were inspired by the beautiful voices and messages of hope and peace.

ELA

Great Lakes Theater actors came into ELA classes this week. Above are pictures from Ms. Biernacki's  Satire class. The actors are connecting themes of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  This week, the students have learned about relationships, Shakespeare, and how to make stage fighting look convincing!  They had a blast!

Business

Picture
Susan Kosakowski, from the Bowling Green State University College of Business, traveled to Chardon High School on Thursday, February 6th to deliver a surprise to senior Victor Rosace. She brought with her the news that Victor had been accepted into the College of Business and that he will receive a $1000 scholarship. The scholarship, one of only ten of its kind, is part of Bowling Green's faculty ambassador program. Mr. Herner, CHS business teacher, acts as a liaison to the BGSU College of Business and Chardon students who are accepted into the program are eligible for the scholarship. A special thank you to Mr. Brown who gave up time in his Multivariable Calculus class to make this special event happen.

ICYMI: CHS Core Values and PBIS: Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports

Picture
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an approach schools can use to improve school safety and promote positive behavior. It also helps schools decide how to respond to a child who misbehaves.  Over the last two decades at Chardon High School, we have created programs such as Freshman Mentoring, AC4P, Core Values Teams, #UTopper Club, Intentional Acts of Kindness, School Spirit, and positive relationship building and soft skills focus to help build up our school culture.

At its heart, PBIS calls on schools to teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about any other subject—like reading or math. PBIS recognizes that kids can only meet behavior expectations if they know what the expectations are. A hallmark of a school using PBIS is that everyone knows what’s appropriate behavior.

We are building off our focus on the PBIS Matrix of behaviors that align with our core values and targeted outcomes that we worked on last school year.  This week students and staff had the opportunity to recognize the positive behaviors and acts of kindness in a Google Form.

We have been blessed to work with local businesses that have been extremely kind to us. Here is the form that students and staff (within the Chardon domain) can fill out. Keep recognizing the good around you!

DC Trip: Second payment February 7th (TODAY) ($100)

Picture
Dear Eighth Graders and Eighth Grade Parents,

We are so excited about our trip to Washington, D.C.!  There is so much to look forward to, and spring is a beautiful time of year to be in our nation’s capital.  School-sponsored tours are essential elements of our academic programs at Chardon High School. Our eighth-graders will have the opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. on a curriculum-based overnight field trip from May 4-6, 2020.

The following are the guidelines for this trip.  The cost of the trip is $445. This includes all meals (except lunch Monday), lodging, and guided experiences.   Payment plan: first payment November 15th ($245), second payment February 7th ($100), and third payment March 13th ($100) or full payment on November 15th.  Payments can be made on Infinite Campus or a check (made out to Chardon Board of Education) through the CHS business office.  All school fees (including athletic fees) must be paid prior to the second trip payment date February 7, 2020.

While every effort will be made to honor room requests, CHS reserves the right to assign hotel rooms and bus assignments.  Violation of our core values may eliminate eligibility for the trip. If a student’s eligibility is removed, any payments made to the tour company will not be refunded.  Students and parents understand that all school rules and Chardon Local School District Board of Education Policies and Procedures are in effect. If there are any disciplinary issues on the trip, the administration reserves the right to require your child to be picked up at the parents’ or guardians’ expense.

Please direct all questions to douglas.higham@chardonschools.org

Coming Up: News You Can Use

Picture
Photo credit: Grant Segall, The Plain Dealer
On Friday, February 21st, Actively Caring for People, Chardon Service Learning, and Teen Leadership students from Chardon High School will be hosting our 8th annual Heart to Heart Senior Citizen Valentines dance.  This event is a celebration of healthy aging.  With the help of the Geauga Department of Aging and University Hospitals, the students of Chardon want to break down the generation gap and demonstrate to senior citizens that high school students have a lot more in common with them than either realizes.  This is achieved by sharing a meal and dancing.  Park elementary school second graders will also participate by singing to the seniors and reading their poetry that they developed in class.  At the end of the event. the seniors win amazing gifts in a raffle donated by the students and local businesses.
