The Week in Reflection: 11/12

Duty and Honor

Picture
At the end of World War 1, the armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, became the official day to celebrate all our nation’s veterans.  Originally called Armistice Day, it became Veteran’s Day after World War II.

In his speech before assembled West Point cadets, General MacArthur, who reminisced of his 30 plus years of military service, said, " Duty, Honor, Country...those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn." As the general further states in his speech about those three words, "these are some of the things they do. They build your basic character. They mold you for your future roles as the custodians of the nation's defense. They make you strong enough to know when you are weak, and brave enough to face yourself when you are afraid. They teach you to be proud and unbending in honest failure, but humble and gentle in success; not to substitute words for actions, not to seek the path of comfort, but to face the stress and spur of difficulty and challenge."

These words resonate today more than ever. Building character, being brave, being humble, and serving others are pillars of humanity. Veterans Day is more than a recognition by athletic teams, going to parades, or services. Veteran's Day is an opportunity to show gratitude and model respect, show honor, and dignity to not only veterans but to each other.

Language Arts LIVE!

Originally conceived by Language Arts teacher Dawn Weaver, Language Arts Live! is a speaker and resource program which provides students with examples of how the knowledge they acquire in the classroom translates to the professional world and life beyond high school.  The objectives are for students to better understand the various reading, writing and communication skills, including 21st century skills such as the 4Cs (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) they are currently learning and to then be able to apply these skills meaningfully to their lives.

The key to the success of this series is parental and community involvement which reinforces our CHARDON core values. Parents and community professionals come into our classrooms and participate in a panel discussion regarding the use of language and communication skills in various settings. Our seniors, in preparation for college and career readiness, will be exploring technical and career writing with the help of mentors currently in the professions to which the seniors aspire. The variety of professionals explain to the students the importance of effective communication skills, ideally motivating them to be effective communicators themselves. On November 9, Allen Herner, Lynn Monaco, and Joy Tersigni welcomed Michael Daniel, Michael McGreevy, Laura Snyder, Jason Soncrant and Allison Zeiger into their senior ELA courses for this year’s speaker panel. We are appreciative of their time and commitment to our seniors.

Panel Credentials:

Michael Daniel
Regional Vice President of Trader Joe’s Company for the Midwest

Michael McGreevy, P.E.
Mechanical Application Engineer
Parker Hose Products Division

Laura Snyder
Bachelor’s degree in journalism; worked as a reporter at a radio station and a daily newspaper, as well as a writer and editor for several trade magazines. Current freelance writer for the trade magazine Candy & Snack Today.

Jason Soncrant, DPT, SCS, CSCS, FAAOMPT
Doctor of Physical Therapy
Center Manager of Chardon Novacare
Orthopedic Manual Therapy Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Physical Therapy
Doctorate of Science in Physical Therapy Graduate Student
Adjunct Faculty for the Doctorate of Physical Therapy Programs at South College (TN) and Baylor University

Allison Zeiger
Pediatric nurse practitioner in the pediatric intensive care unit at the Cleveland Clinic main campus

We are grateful for our panelists, and the collaboration of our ELA teachers for providing this opportunity for our students. Special thanks to Lynn Monaco for writing this edition to the Week in Reflection!

Girl Scout Gold Award: Makenna Ricketts

Picture
My name is Makenna Ricketts and I am a sophomore here at CHS. I am currently working on my Girl Scout Gold Award, which is equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award in Boy Scouts. I have played lacrosse for more than six years, so I wanted to choose a lacrosse-related topic that I could make into a sustainable project within my community. My Gold Award is an adaptive lacrosse initiative, open to 10-21 year olds with various special needs. As of right now, I am trying to collect equipment donations. I have picked two dates for a donation drive - Wednesday, Nov. 10: 6-8 PM and Wednesday, Nov. 17: 6-8 PM, here at CHS. If you have any retired, and in good condition, lacrosse equipment, please consider donating and putting them to use for a good cause. If you are unable to donate, please share with anyone and everyone you know who may have lacrosse equipment in storage. The equipment can range from boys/girls/goalie sticks, helmets, goggles, elbow pads, shoulder pads to lacrosse balls. Anything helps!

You can follow my journey on Twitter @laxabled. Thank you!

Chardon Schools Foundation

Picture
Chardon Schools Foundation has been the district's Academic Boosters since 1989, awarding nearly $500,000 in grants since its establishment and $14,000 in grants to Chardon Schools this year alone! The non-profit organization, which serves grade levels PreK - 12, has not hosted its usual fundraising events during the pandemic. To help the Foundation continue its mission of bringing new and enriching learning experiences to Chardon Schools students, they have just launched an ONLINE Fall 2021 Fundraiser with a goal of reaching $20,000 by 11:59PM Tuesday, November 30, 2021. Individual and business donations are welcome and appreciated. With permission, donors will be acknowledged with gratitude on CSF's social media pages.

BONUS:

Each Fall 2021 Fundraiser donor will be entered into their random drawing to be held on December 1, 2021.

ONE lucky Fall 2021 Fundraiser donor will receive:
  • One (1) 2022-23 Hilltopper Family Athletics Pass
  • One (1) $50 Home Depot Gift Card
  • One (1) $50 Bass Lake Taverne Gift Card

The Foundation THANKS YOU for supporting its mission of enriching learning experiences for Pre-K through Grade 12 Hilltopper students.
