1/23/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 1/27Opening: Action Changes Things
As Principal, one of the most essential responsibilities is to be a leader throughout all walks of school life. Managing my time is essential. Each day, I have a list of mission-driven tasks and goals to accomplish. There is always the plan, and then there is the reality of the undocumented needs that arrive in my office any given day. We all know that this is all part of the master plan of leadership. Finding the time to multi/multi-task becomes an essential skill in the life of a building administrator. This week we spent much of our time working with students, families, and staff to drive home our mission driven values and expectations. We spent time talking about the choices that we make and how they can determine the person that we become.
Our choices are one thing that we can control. Our actions emulate our choices, and our character defines our lives. This mantra helps define our purpose. I am a big advocate of empowering students, and adults all of the time. I am also an advocate for being thorough, compassionate, and firm. We all share important roles in guiding ourselves, and others within choices. As parents, the world that we are raising our children in has changed significantly since we grew up as teenagers. The countless hustle, schedules, along with personal devices has shifted much of the time that we are able to spend with our children. The noise in the world forced us to learn evolving technology, means of communication, and new trends. One thing that doesn't change in this world, is our response to the noise. Raising a child today is challenging. Our job as parents is the key to the relationships that we form with our children. They need us more than ever--even when they put about barriers, and tell us that we don't understand. At some point, our children will mature to see that we too were in their shoes. From the students perspective, their world was born with with movement, technology, snapchat, Tik Tok, and Instagram. Students can hang out with a group of friends in the same room and snap each other without even opening their mouth. Student live by spontaneous schedules driving most parents nuts. Whereas we as adults were raised in a personable, face to face, along with having a 36ft long phone cord to talk to friends--- we (parents and educators) have to teach these skills to communicate, stand confident, share and collaborate. As educators, we often find ourselves filling shoes not only being an educator but also as a role model and guide to our students. Educators are constantly running throughout the day to teach, provide intervention, and run extra-curricular activities while often being a parent taking for their families. All of this circles us to a larger community that we are all connected to. We are better connected when we share in our similarities, and shared responsibilities guiding our students and children to make the best decisions, coral them when they don't, and work together to raise our children in our world filled with noise. We are proud of all of our children and students that continue to lead the way with their work in the classroom and hallways. Likewise we are grateful for all of our students that are showing integrity in and out of school. The students Action Changes Things for the better each day. Schedule for Next Week

#27BeTheChange
It is hard to believe that we have manufactured school for almost a month after the flood damage. In less than a week, February 1st marks the calendar.
February provides us time to really focus on our core values in specific ways. The month of February surrounds the theme of kindness. There are so many ways that we can demonstrate kindness throughout the month as a school, in classes, and as person. Faith Kilfoyle, Sydney Murray, and the HMM group are organizing the context of the month for our school to surround ourselves with themes to better take care of ourselves, others, our community, and to live this change as a learned behavior. Take some time to reflect on ways that you can better prepare for #27BeTheChange
The 27 Days of Be the Change will begin February 1 and well beyond February 27.
It is the continued hope of the established core values at CHS that these actions will inspire and change lives. By actively caring for others each day, a habit of kindness can develop and continue well past this month. Weekly Themes 1-February 5: SELF-Be the Best Version of Yourself; Be Positive and Kind to YOU
February 6-12: OTHERS- Demonstrate Kindness to not only yourself, but to others- family, friends, staff
February 13-19: COMMUNITY- Find yourself in the service of others
February 20-28: LIVE THE CHANGE- 21 Days create new habits. Model this leadership each day
Purpose Chardon is our home. It is our community. We love our families and those who have surrounded us with love for generations. Like most homes, we too have faced difficulties and times when we felt lost. There are so many moments that transformed us through these challenging times. Our community, the resilience and love of students, staff, and alumni have built the bridges of compassion, outreach, and our core values. Each day allows us to grow stronger, love more, and give ourselves. We have great days, good days, and tough days. What is most important is that we keep sight of our purpose. From the moments after our darkest day, leaders in our school and community vowed to stimulate change in laws, behaviors, and awareness. At Chardon High School, we stand firm in our conviction to be an instrument of change. The school is challenging all people to spread and share kindness and to be an instrument of change every day, specifically in the month of February. Opportunities for Outreach

Chardon Goes to the Musicals
Closing: Winter Wonderland
Growing up in Chardon, I can remember year after year facing the battles of winter weather beginning around November and living in our region through the Maple Festival. The last few weeks were the opening acts to what we all experienced last Sunday and throughout the week leaving a wintry mess of ice, sleet, snow, and cold rain.
I shared with our staff earlier in the week my gratitude for our maintenance staff and custodians that spent much of their time getting our lots cleared and sidewalks cleaned. Their work seemed to be endless lately in and out of the building. This shoutout not only goes for the work accomplished on our campus, but the entire district. The department was shorthanded and created a clear entry for all of our students, staff, and families on throughout the week. Likewise, with all of the moving parts inside of the building--it was wonderful to be able to continue the rivalry school day competition that started in 2019 with hosting the Battle at the Barn. Although, we had to move the event to the middle school, the baby barn was packed with 'Toppers. Special thanks to Doug Snyder who was able to coordinate this event while we managed the high school routines throughout all of the already adjusted parts with classrooms. Check out the awesome posts from @Toppernation from January 25!
Have a warm weekend with your family and friends!

1/16/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 1/20Opening: Weathering the Storms In Our Lives
This time of year can create a sense of passiveness or lethargy in energy, creativity, and health. Living in Northeast Ohio and walking outside to cloudiness and unpredictable weather only adds to the feeling of waiting and wishing for a change. No human is immune to these feelings...especially after the last several months. Taking care of yourself will best equip you for emotions that can arise this time of year. Over the last couple of weeks, we certainly had to weather some literal storms in and out of our building.
Weathering the storm When a storm is predicted you prepare the best that you can as a homeowner, motorist, or tourist. Your experiences, along with trusting others who have been in similar conditions, best equip you with the knowledge that you need to get through these situations. Likewise, in your life, there are many people that you encounter that have experienced the trials of good and bad times. Listening to the wisdom of family members and trusted adults can provide insight into the best ways to get through difficult times. Knowing that there are others who are experiencing these feelings, or passiveness is an important reality to remember. You are not in this alone. In order to equip yourself fully, it is important to talk to others and share how you are feeling instead of letting the "storm" grow inside of your life. The third quarter of a school year can be compared to the 7th inning stretch in baseball: the time of year where students can become very restless and lethargic. Every student can fall into this restless period- it is important that parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators work collaboratively to guide students through this seasonal experience. Creating new habits The best way to get out of the third quarter blues is to create new habits and routines. This is easier said than done. Students need to choose this response to create the new outcomes that they desire. Light energizes each of us. During the winter, the days seem shorter due to the change in season and the tilt of the earth. Our bodies adjust to this change and we need to create new routines to increase our energy. In the same way, the third quarter can create a "tilt" in our energy to stay on top of our work, exercise, and past routines. Many students may fall into this trap of the third quarter and wonder what happened when the quarter ends in early March. Instead of wondering where the time went---reestablish the routines that you set forth in the first and second quarters and plowshare the noise of the third quarter. Preparing for tomorrow by living today In the book, Above the Line: Lessons in Leadership and Life from a Championship Program, the authors discuss the success formula that can catapult our responses to any event in our lives. This formula is simple: E + R = O (Event + Response = Outcome) We don’t control the events in life and we don’t directly control the outcomes. However, we always have control over how we choose to respond. The author's approach to athletes can align perfectly with our response to events in our life. The key indicator is leadership. This leadership is not only what I can control as a principal. It is what WE can lead as parents, teachers, and coaches to our children--along with how we can support each other in the process. We all need to ask the question--exactly what is it that I am after each day? Having this clarity of purpose will allow us to keep our responses "above the line" of being intentional, purposeful, and skillful whereas living "below the line" of being impulsive, and on autopilot. Under pressure, we do not rise to the occasion. We rise or fall to the level of our training. Therefore, train far beyond the finish line of the third quarter and the outcomes will catapult the goals that you set for yourself. CHS Building Update

Closing Reflection
Looking back at the myriad of words that have been recorded this semester in this weekly blog- it is easy to see the volume of amazing students that have walked the halls, fields, and unique learning environments this semester. Coming into this school year, we had so many opportunities to build off the legacy here at CHS. The students and staff have responded with dignity, and perseverance throughout a semester filled with extraordinary accomplishments. This is a perfect time of year for everyone at CHS to recharge and refocus on the simple things in life. As we transition into 2023, remind yourself of how precious time is and the people that are in your inner circle. Take time for you...and spend time with your families.
As I have shared before, Robert Frost has played a significant role in authoring the numerous decisions that I have made in my life. His writings, along with other writers- fictional, philosophical, and sacred have inspired me to find my purpose. As we close a new year, consider the hills and valleys that you have faced along with your decisions along the way.
The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference
As I have shared with every student, staff, and parent that I have talked to over the years---we all have a story. It is through this story that we find ourselves and live with a defined purpose. Finding our call in life has no timeline or playbook. The more we open our eyes to the beauty in us, around us, and beyond us- the more we define who we are.
Parents:
Cherish these moments that you have with your children. The days come and passed so quickly as you have watched your children grow. These years of high school are pivotal in the maturation of your children. Often, you may wonder, do they hear me? Do they know that I care? The answer is complicated and simple...yes. Your children hear you, need you, and love you...even when they make decisions that ask the question if they ever have heard a word that you have shared. Remember, you were in their shoes. The lines of communication are always open- and when you dial them with your love--they will hear.
Students:
The last four months have gone by so quickly. It doesn't matter what grade level that you are in---you have faced a lot of choices. What I love about high school is the diversity of experiences that you face throughout your years. Whether you are an eighth grader walking the halls for the first time, or you just were accepted into college--these years draw into deep memories. Cherish today, for tomorrow is never granted. Live for the simple moments in life. Unplug from data and plug into real communication with your friends and family. A snapchat message will always be there waiting; never bypass a simple embrace, hello, or opportunity to give of yourself.
Staff:
One of the most overlook careers in the world is the one that creates careers. Being a teacher is a sacrifice, a gift, and often a thankless job. We appreciate the gifts that our teachers provide each day at Chardon High School. We have tremendous educators that not only live their content--they teach about living. Thank you for all that you do to train the future leaders--today.
As we transition into a new year, my wish for you is that of continued, hope, joy, and happiness. Enjoy this time with family and friends. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and have a joyous New Year! The Week in Reflection returns after the New Year.

12/2/2022
The Week in Reflection: 12/2
The Season: Calibration with Purpose
It is hard to believe that we celebrated Thanksgiving last week. Preparing for the holiday season can deploy so many emotions: excitement, beauty, new beginnings, and stress. Our response to the season often can act as an amalgamation of all of these feelings all at one time. So, how can you take time this December to prepare and calibrate for the season?
Excitement: Recall the emotions that you had as a child. You were filled with wonder and awe. Life was very simple in your eyes and everything was pure. These feelings remind us that this time of year is about spending time in the comfort of family and friends while celebrating traditions. Recreate these traditions with your family and celebrate each other. Your time together is so precious. As a child, we cherished these moments. Our children need traditions and memories to pass on these celebrations with their families someday. Stop for a moment to reflect on how quickly your time has come and gone with your children. These moments can never be replicated. We all need to pause and be reminded that certain things at work can wait in order for us to celebrate our children.
Beauty: This season is filled with beauty in Ohio. Yes, not all of us love snow. Yet, we cannot ignore its glory around us throughout this season. We know that our lives do not surround the obvious plot twists on the Hallmark channel, but we can pause to see the beauty in the simple things of life. I preach all of the time that we all have a story and together our stories make our community. Take time this month to create new habits for yourself, or even break some tough ones. One of the hardest tasks that dwell deep inside of humanity is being at peace with yourself. As hard as it can be---reduce the noise around you to see the beauty in you. Your life is a gift to be shared and nourished. Take time for yourself to breathe, slow down, and live in the moment.
New Beginnings: Celebrate your relationships. This is nothing new to your vocabulary. Many people are uncomfortable this time of year because of failed relationships, mourning, and hardships. Many of us have a hard time letting go of the past, feelings, and tough memories. How will you ever grow? Will you run from it or learn becomes of it? Seize every positive moment as an opportunity to expand your humility and every difficult moment as an opportunity to expand your territory and influence. Life is too short to hold on to the past as an ornament. Rather, seize the moment and polish your choices from it.
Stress: Without a doubt, this time of year can cause stress. A simple example is to look at our mothers and spouses this time of year. They are stressed because they want everything to be perfect. That's all fine, but if you want your mother or spouse to experience fully the above stated---HELP THEM. This time of year is not to be burdened on the shoulders of one. It is an opportunity to show our love to those that care for us. Besides the stress that our families have during this season, we have our own personal stress. Students have the stress of exams, finals, and projects on top of their job and athletics. Of course, our children love to schedule (without telling us) social gatherings with their friends. Students, take time to check your phone in at the door and converse with your family. The latest post on Snapchat or Tik Tok is certainly not as important as talking to a human face-to-face. Likewise, this time of year is a stressful time for staff as they attempt to do all of the above: preserving the excitement with their families, seeing the beauty in themselves, creating new beginnings, and grading all of their exams and projects. I am grateful to each of them as they work together to create new routines in new places while serving our mission.
With the time constraints of my job, it is so important that I practice what I preach. The students and staff know that they are an extension of my family...but my faith, family, and friends are mission-critical to the daily energy and tasks asked of me as one of the building leaders. Be the best version of yourself to those that matter most and live today with a focus on tomorrow.

Screen Time: Recalibrating with Intention

I am not an ophthalmologist, but I know that too much screen time can impact my eyes. For over 8 years, we have lived in a (CE) Chromebook Era. It is academically hard to think of the (BCE) Before Chromebook Era. These devices have revolutionized every corner of education. Students and staff can literally do everything to deliver teaching and learning with them. These devices are extraordinary tools and help assist in the learning process. Since we utilize Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets--so much of school is synchronous to instant feedback. There are so many positives to being a 1:1 school, and there is a huge responsibility to teach digital citizenship and how to buffer appropriate screen time. Monitoring screen time is important, and this week, I was immersed in 5 full observations--four of them were during block days. The best part of the lessons was that Chromebooks and cell phones were not anywhere near the students during the lessons. I observed highly engaging lessons that surrounded discussion, participation, conversation, and problem-solving. I literally was the only one on a device. This got me really thinking. I know that our kids are actively using their devices for learning, and as I write this WIR- we have 91 students currently online using their Chromebooks. The top 5 sites that are used this week are Google Classroom, Google Drive, Google Docs, MyHMHEducation, and ALEKS. This is the data that I see.
However, a lesson that impressed me to write this portion of the Week in Reflection was something observed in AP Spanish. [I must add that I had to translate what the heck was going on as they actively engaged in dialogue preparing for the AP Test.] The Spanish dialogue and conjugation of language surrounded a discussion between peers on the topic of screen time. In this room, it was interesting to see that this sample size of students averaged a range of 2hrs-17hrs of active screen time on their cellular device! The was mind-blowing. After researching, I learned that the "average" screen time calculated in professional journals is that high school-age students average around 7.5 hours of calculated cell phone screen time throughout a single day. This is a crazy number to think about. Literally, a third of the day staring at a little screen. The joke in that class was that I was going to put this in the Week in Reflection. After the dare (which I will hear about from them), I took it on. I told the class that I was going to share resources for parents to learn how to monitor and set limits to screen time.
Many parents are actively involved in this process already, but there are many of us out there that don't know how to. The link above is quite clear to moderate cell phone users. For others, the old adage, "Give me your phone" may suffice. Regardless of where you are on the list, it is a good reminder for us and a great reminder for our children to slow down, decompress from screen time, and let their eyes relax.

Jeremy's Kids 2022
This year AC4P, and Interact are raising funds for the annual Jeremy's Kids Christmas fundraiser. This fundraiser is in memory of Jeremy Mizen, the 6-year-old son of teacher Rob Mizen, who died in a car crash on Christmas Eve in 1999. Instead of dwelling on their horrible loss and having this tragic event destroy their lives, Mr. Mizen and his wife decided that they would instead celebrate Jeremy’s life focusing on the positive aspects of his life.
AC4P, NHS, Interact, and the Actively Caring Leadership class will use the raised funds to support less fortunate families in the Chardon Community. Many local families are struggling financially with giving their children gifts on Christmas. Every year the students of Chardon High School have joined together with the community to make sure relief was available to these families.
As a follow up the the event that Sydney Murray and Faith Kilfoyle organized--The 2022 Holiday Craft Show was a huge success! Sydney and Faith were able to raise nearly $1,200 in donations from the show and the vendors were very successful! Thank you for all those who participated and came to the day. We will make this an annual event at Chardon High School!
Thank you for your generosity.

ICYMI:Topper Club Awards

Our core values recognize Achievement as an essential benchmark of the learning that transpires every day at Chardon High School. We have extraordinary educators that prepare our students for college, career, and life readiness. Our students refine their learning in the classroom and demonstrate their abilities in so many skill sets in extra-curriculars, service, and clubs.
It is our goal that every single person at Chardon High School will graduate finding their purpose. The programs and experiences that you experience at Chardon from grades 8-12 expose you to opportunities to achieve this purpose. More importantly, the relationships that you develop are paramount in your development. Every student matters to us. Taking the time to celebrate achievement collectively provides us the motivation and encouragement to push and strive for success ---so that every student will find their outcome after walking across the stage to further education, immediate employment, enlistment into our armed forces, and even delving into becoming a young entrepreneur.
Being a part of the Topper Club is an extraordinary accomplishment. Our students being recognized this morning have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. Each day, we are educating the future leaders of our ever-changing world. Together, we are witnessing the development of engineers, doctors, lawyers, educators, chemists, advanced manufacturers, cosmetologists, medics, leaders, and philanthropists who see the good in others and respond to the needs of others. We are grateful for their leadership and look forward to the many ways that they will serve our school in the present and the future.

Core Value Awards

The Principal's Award is one of the highest honors for a student to achieve. Being recognized as a student who embodies the core values is an honor that has no classroom or state assessment connected to it. A committee nominated students throughout the year for modeling our values. This year, we are recognizing the following students who model the character and commitment to serve others and use their gifts to embrace Community, Humility, Achievement, Respect, Dignity, Optimism, and Nurture as they live these values in and out of school.

Closing Message : A message for our students

This is an email that I sent to all students this week.
We are rounding another milestone of the school year. We just have a few regular school weeks left before we head into the midterm schedule. I have spent much of the last two days working with students. One of the experiences that I enjoy is counseling and giving advice to students. More recently, it has been all that I have been doing. Rightfully so, we have all needed some words of encouragement over the last 14 days.
With all of the emotions that we face as students (and staff) outside of the hours of the school day, we often see you and greet you when you are most tired, and lethargic at 7:15 am. Let's be real, mornings are tough for most of us and we are all feeling stressed. Even for the adults that get to school really early--we all need are internal engines to start...and we all have a story that we are bringing to school.
This time of year can impact us differently without us even knowing it. The hustle of school, activities and the holidays can catch us when we are not ready. What is really important is prioritizing the little things, writing things down, and doing what we can with the time we are given--in school, in class, and with the responsibilities that we all face.
Always know that you are surrounded by people who care for you and want you to be the most successful that you can be at CHS. It is important to seek out help from your teachers for anything: missing assignments, absences, struggle with understanding, not having the energy, or just having someone to listen to you. Your counselors, coaches, staff, and administrators will make the time to be present for your needs. You just need to ask, or have someone ask for you.
We care for you more than you can understand. Take a few moments to reflect on these words, do a little self-reflection internally, and take a deep breath.
One step at a time, one moment at a time, and one day at a time. Together, and that's the key word--TOGETHER--we will transcend as Hilltoppers.
Oftentimes, I feel that I write to just my internal self since I never know who is reading these emails. It only takes one person to make another feel better in the present moment. With that mantra in my head, I wish you a good night and an even better tomorrow. You are loved!
-Murray

We Give Thanks: Special Thanksgiving Edition
We Give Thanks
The last three months have gone by like a whirlwind. The older we get the faster time seems to go by. One of the great things at school is watching kids grow and mature. It is a joy to watch our kids grow up even when we all want the time to slow down.
Time is inevitable. Time can feel like an endless hand moving over each second and time can go before us in an instant. Time is really about how we use it. I can reflect upon the whirlwind of emotions we all have felt during the time we have spent over the last three months. However, today's edition of the Week in Reflection is an opportunity for my team to reflect on our gratitude to our entire Chardon community.
There are so many extraordinary athletic and academic accolades that our students have accomplished over the short time that we have been together since August. I am so grateful for the collective efforts our students and staff have embarked upon at this moment in time. Allow this short time away to express gratitude to all those that you love.
As principal, I am grateful and love you for who you are, where you are, and where you are going. Keep striving for greatness in all that you do!

Ms. Pavicic, Assistant Principal
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love the simplicity of the day: quality time with family, good food, a Turkey Trot, and an opportunity to pause and reflect with gratitude on all that is good in life. This year, I am grateful for so much: my parents who I’m fortunate to have remain as active parts of my life as they reach old age, my nine nieces and nephews who energize me and serve as lights in my life, and for the beautiful community of Chardon who I have been so fortunate to serve as Assistant Principal of CHS this school year.
I knew coming to Chardon I was coming to a special place. Upon asking Mr. Murray, “What are your Core Values?” and listening to him state those values, reciting without hesitation what each value exemplifies, all while wearing a “Core Value” bracelet proudly on his wrist, I was moved by his sincere passion to serve students, staff, and the Chardon community. I soon learned that this is not an isolated passion, but one collectively shared by the administration team, teachers, counselors, paraprofessionals, secretaries, custodians, bus drivers, coaches, board members, families, and the entire student body. The love and care that the people of Chardon have for this community and each other is truly moving. It is unshakable, authentic, and deeply rooted. Upon taking on this role of leadership, I was amazed by all who did not just want to merely shake my hand and say hello when meeting me, but truly wanted to get to know who I was and where I come from, and were so open and welcoming to having me as a part of their school community. One of the most outstanding moments of welcome came on a Saturday afternoon while I was at a neighboring community football event with my family, when Chardon elementary age students and their parents enthusiastically approached me, “Aren’t you the new principal at the high school?!” With my “Yes!” I was given a heart-felt, bright smile and kind words in response. My family was in awe, and asked, “Wow, how do they know you?” And my response was swift: “That’s Chardon!”
Committed to tradition yet progressive in promoting high achievement and unique opportunities to reach all learners, Chardon is so much more than just an institution for academics. The CHS Core Values, Community, Humility, Achievement, Respect, Dignity, Optimism, and Nurture, are incorporated into every part of our students’ experiences, in the classroom, in clubs and activities, on the stage, at job sites, and on the athletic field. With this Core Value focus, students learn to face challenges in the face of adversity, to collaborate with others rather than hide in isolation, to communicate and have honest discussions that move people forward, to work hard to develop into the best versions of themselves, and to serve as active, goodwill contributors in our rapidly evolving complex world.
Chardon is no stranger to hardship, and there is much I have learned about resilience, togetherness, and faith from what I have witnessed in these short few months here. Chardon is tough. Chardon is kind. Chardon is real. Chardon is beautiful. And to all lucky enough to make their way into this community, Chardon is home. I am immensely grateful for the honor and privilege of being able to serve as an educational leader at CHS. To all the Chardon students, staff, families, and community members for making me feel welcomed and a part of the Hilltopper family, I thank you from the bottom of my heart, and wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving.

Mr. Higham , Assistant Principal
It can be difficult to figure out what to write when you want to tell your staff and students how much you appreciate them, but I won’t let that keep me from saying thank you. Every year at this time, I remind my family and friends how much I truly enjoy Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is family and friends, something near and dear to all Americans. Most recently, this time of year also means The Ohio State Buckeyes will be playing TTUN on the gridiron. So, what is better than family, friends, food, and football in Ohio?
For various reasons, “thank you” isn’t said enough. It is easy to get tangled up in daily obstacles, work dynamics, or an overloaded email box. As a result, many people find themselves obsessing over what they could have more of: more time off, more money, or more time in a day. Because of this, we often forget to be grateful for what we do have and to reach out to others who we really are thankful for.
Thanksgiving always causes me to hit the pause button and recalibrate myself and be thankful for what I have. As our community continues to grow, we will have opportunities to come together and work in a focused way to make certain that our students have the best experiences possible.
Every moment of the day is a blessing, including moments working with you! Happy Thanksgiving!
~Mr. Higham

~Mr. Higham
Mr. Murray, Principal
Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the simple things of life. It is important to take the time to reflect on all of the beauty of the semester. Every single day provides for us an opportunity to give, to learn, and to serve. I am forever grateful to the friends that I have as I walk down each hallway. It is easy to call the staff at CHS my friends. The teachers and staff members energize me with their passion for learning and love of our students. I love my staff, and I am forever grateful for their gifts that they provide our students.
One of the best parts of my day is interacting with students. It is hard to believe that we are almost at the halfway point of the school year. We have such wonderful students! I truly love their kindness, energy, creativity, and leadership. I am so grateful for the beauty they give to the Chardon community. I am a better man just by working beside each of them. From sitting with our eighth graders to meeting with our seniors-- I love spending my time with each of them--even with a little more space between us.
I am grateful for the support, encouragement, and assistance that our parents have provided not only me, but to our teachers, coaches, and community. This year has aged all of us, but is through your energy that gives me fuel to get through the events we experience every new day. You continue to model servant leadership to each of us!
Most importantly, I am grateful to my beautiful family that sacrifice so much to be with me. They haven't seen me a ton, but they know how much I love them. My wife is truly my best friend. She is beside me at many events, and she knows how to keep me balanced in all that I do in/out of school. I am blessed to have our daughters at Chardon, and I look forward to sharing many memories with them through their years in our district.
Thanksgiving is an opportunity to give thanks to the simple things in life: family, friends and familiar fellowship. Let this day be a reminder of how the simple things in life are the strongest reminders of why we work, why we give, and why we serve. Have a beautiful week with your family!

Topper Club Awards

Today, we will celebrate many moments of achievement.
The following slideshow presents all of the students who are being recognized for their academic achievement.

The Week in Reflection: 11/18

Over the past three weeks, I have been extremely connected to our students in providing communications, counseling, and service to our mission. Mr. Higham, Ms. Pavicic, and I have taken time to meet with numerous students to discuss academics, relationships, messages, and behaviors.
Countless hours have been spent with families, outside agencies, and local advocates to document, plan, and articulate ways to provide and ensure that all of the situations that have come to our offices are comprehensively attended to with precision.
In between proactively talking with groups, guiding young students with their words, and situations outside of the school--- we have worked tirelessly to not interrupt learning and targeted outcomes in the classroom.
Many of the tasks that the administration works on are unnoticed by many, but they are done out of a commitment to you, our students, and our school. We do this while balancing our own family life.
The CHS staff are extraordinary people. They have been assisting me, our assistant principals, and teachers while we manage and lead through covering classes, lending a hand with supervision, and assisting students with their needs. At our core, community driven values and relationships carry the beacon that drives our success. The phrase that breathes energy in our building is Chardon Strong. This mantra is best understood in the following ways:
We are Chardon. To live our values means that we are defined by our response to any outcome. We have modeled this for generations of students and parents towards how we respond to difficulty. We are a community in good and bad times who will live with integrity. We have been consistently humbled in our response to moments of success, doubt, and difficulty. We are a district that demonstrates achievement in our outcomes to the state, and outreach to our community and nation. We model respect in our success and failures and how we respond to each other. We recognize the value of seeing the dignity and honor of all of the students and staff members that we encounter. Most importantly, we are optimistic for tomorrow by living our purpose today as we nurture each other. More than ever, we need to nurture each other.
We are Chardon...you cannot be built much tougher--but, it doesn't make us superheroes that are invincible to emotion. We all feel, we are hurt, and we all share the same passion for our kids. As we transition into a short two day week next week, take the time to give thanks to someone who has made a difference in your life this school year. Hug them, thank them, encourage them, and embrace moments when you can make another person feel better because of your presence.

It was with deep sadness that we informed you on Thursday about a loss to our school community. On November 16, Zachary Maas, a very gifted sophomore at Chardon High School, lost his life by suicide. This loss is sure to raise many emotions, feelings, and questions. Thursday was a calamity day due to inclement weather, however, today we have many adults available to support our students and staff. This is an indescribable time for Zachary’s family and they are grateful for our thoughts and intentions. The Week in Reflection: 11/11
Duty and Honor
At the end of World War 1, the armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, became the official day to celebrate all our nation’s veterans. Originally called Armistice Day, it became Veteran’s Day after World War II.
In his speech before assembled West Point cadets, General MacArthur, who reminisced of his 30 plus years of military service, said, " Duty, Honor, Country...those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn." As the general further states in his speech about those three words, "these are some of the things they do. They build your basic character. They mold you for your future roles as the custodians of the nation's defense. They make you strong enough to know when you are weak, and brave enough to face yourself when you are afraid. They teach you to be proud and unbending in honest failure, but humble and gentle in success; not to substitute words for actions, not to seek the path of comfort, but to face the stress and spur of difficulty and challenge."
These words resonate today more than ever. Building character, being brave, being humble, and serving others are pillars of humanity. Veterans Day is more than a recognition by athletic teams, going to parades, or services. Veteran's Day is an opportunity to show gratitude and model respect, show honor, and dignity to not only veterans but to each other.

Language Arts Live! is a speaker and resource program which provides students with examples of how the knowledge they acquire in the classroom translates to the professional world and life beyond high school. The objectives are for students to better understand the various reading, writing, and communication skills, as well as 21st century skills such as the 4Cs (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) they are currently learning and to then be able to apply these skills meaningfully to their lives.
The key to the success of this series is parental and community involvement which reinforces our CHARDON core values. Parents and community professionals come into our classrooms and participate in a panel discussion regarding the use of language and communication skills in various settings. Our seniors, in preparation for college and career readiness, will be exploring technical and career writing with the help of mentors currently in the professions to which the seniors aspire. The variety of professionals explain to the students the importance of effective communication skills, ideally motivating them to be effective communicators themselves. On November 7, Lynn Monaco, David Massucci, and Dawn Weaver welcomed Keith Brewster, Jessica Henderson, Tod McCloskey, and Katy Nagaj into their senior ELA courses for this year’s speaker panel. We are appreciative of their time and commitment to our seniors.

Fall Play: Puffs
CHS Principal Podcast: Puffs

You might be familiar with the story of a certain boy wizard who went off to wizarding school and ultimately saved the entire wizarding world. Well, this isn't a story about him. Instead, it is about the Puffs who are a house of very loyal and very extraordinarily ordinary wizards.
Puffs, or: Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic is a Potter-inspired comedy exploring the world of these oftentimes forgotten supporting characters. We get to meet three new heroes, their fellow Puffs, some familiar faces, and some new ones. We follow their epic journey to both familiar and unfamiliar places, and discover something about ourselves along the way. Ultimately, we all have a little bit of Puff in us, whether it is our awkwardness, our forgetfulness, our desire to work hard, our love of our friends and family, or the fact that we have a minor obsession with badgers.
Please come join us for a journey through the wizarding world of the Puffs. We promise you'll laugh, cry, and find some truly awesome, badger-loving friends along the way!

For the first time since 2019, the Topper Club Awards (certificate/letter/pin for 3.75 cumulative GPA and higher, in addition to recognizing the National Merit students, etc) will occur at Chardon High School during the day in an effort to properly recognize these students while demonstrating to all students what can be achieved through hard work and dedication to their academics. Jeremy's Kids
|
Chardon High School working collaboratively with Interact, Actively Caring for People will have a virtual fundraiser for Jeremy's Kids. Last year we raised almost $10,000.00. We helped 13 families totaling 77 people. The mission of Jeremy's kids is to provide holiday gifts for at need families in Geauga County. In 20 years of giving back to the community, we have raised over $120,000. With the money raised, Chardon High School students are given the opportunity to go to local stores and shop for these families.
For more information visit Jeremey's Kids. Please consider donating to this excellent cause and help make a child have an amazing Christmas. |
CHS Holiday Craft Show

Sydney Murray and Faith Kilfoyle are seniors at Chardon High School taking an independent study focusing on Leadership. Each quarter they have worked on projects to develop and refine their leadership skills. They continue to amaze me with the ideas and plans they develop.
On November 26 (From 10:00 am-3:00 pm) they are hosting a Holiday Craft Fair and Vendor Show at CHS.
The purpose of this holiday craft fair is to highlight the creativity and talent of our students, staff, and community. This Holiday Craft Fair is FREE for CHS students and Staff members that would like to sell a product that they create: knitting, jewelry, painting, handmade cards, crafts, and CHS apparel.
All Chardon-based local vendors will pay $25/per table and all guests will have the opportunity to make a small donation to Jeremy's kids to enter. The proceeds will go to Jeremy's Kids.
Saturday, November 26th is Small Business Saturday. This entrepreneurial spirit not only embodies the learning outcomes we are learning as seniors but provides our community the opportunity to purchase wholesome crafts by Chardon students and staff and our community.
Any student or staff member in all of CLSD can fill out this form in order for us to gauge the number of cafeteria tables that we will need to set up. Likewise, any vendor can use the same form. Mr. Murray will be in contact with you.
This is an exciting opportunity that can become an annual event. We realize that this is just weeks away but we are really excited about what this could turn into!
Please contact Mr. Douglas Murray at douglas.murray@chardonschools.org with any additional questions.
The deadline for reserving a vendor table is Wednesday, November 16. A $25 fee will be charged to vendors outside of Chardon Local School District. (All proceeds go to Jeremy's Kids)
This is open to ALL community members! Anyone who is interested in being a vendor can sell baked goods, apparel, jewelry, art, stationary, etc!
