12/1/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 12/1Tis the Season
It is hard to believe that we celebrated Thanksgiving last week. As we transitioned back to school on Monday, the Lake Erie snow machine turned on blanketing the area through the night and into Tuesday providing a snow day this week. Huge shoutout to our maintenance and custodial teams for clearing all the snow for school on Wednesday.
Just as preparing for a snowstorm is important, preparing for the end of the quarter is very important as we close out the semester. Over the last two weeks, I have met with each grade level to best prepare our students for their educational success planning. Oftentimes, the holiday season can deploy so many emotions as the weather changes, and the end of the semester comes along: the excitement, the beauty, the new beginnings, and the stress. Our response to the season often can act as an amalgamation of all of these feelings all at one time. So, how can you take time this December to prepare and calibrate for the season? Excitement: Recall the emotions that you had as a child. You were filled with wonder and awe. Life was very simple in your eyes and everything was pure. These feelings remind us that this time of year is about spending time in the comfort of family and friends while celebrating traditions. Recreate these traditions with your family and celebrate each other. Your time together is so precious. As a child, we cherished these moments. Our children need traditions and memories to pass on these celebrations with their families someday. Stop for a moment to reflect on how quickly your time has come and gone with your children. These moments can never be replicated. We all need to pause and be reminded that certain things at work can wait in order for us to celebrate our children. Beauty: This season is filled with beauty in Ohio. Yes, not all of us love snow. Yet, we cannot ignore its glory around us throughout this season. We know that our lives do not surround the obvious plot twists on the Hallmark channel, but we can pause to see the beauty in the simple things of life. I preach all of the time that we all have a story and together our stories make our community. Take time this month to create new habits for yourself, or even break some tough ones. One of the hardest tasks that dwell deep inside of humanity is being at peace with yourself. As hard as it can be---reduce the noise around you to see the beauty in you. Your life is a gift to be shared and nourished. Take time for yourself to breathe, slow down, and live in the moment. New Beginnings: Celebrate your relationships. This is nothing new to your vocabulary. Many people are uncomfortable this time of year because of failed relationships, mourning, and hardships. Many of us have a hard time letting go of the past, feelings, and tough memories. How will you ever grow? Will you run from it or learn becomes of it? Seize every positive moment as an opportunity to expand your humility and every difficult moment as an opportunity to expand your territory and influence. Life is too short to hold on to the past as an ornament. Rather, seize the moment and polish your choices from it. Stress: Without a doubt, this time of year can cause stress. A simple example is to look at our mothers and spouses this time of year. They are stressed because they want everything to be perfect. That's all fine, but if you want your mother or spouse to experience fully the above stated---HELP THEM. This time of year is not to be burdened on the shoulders of one. It is an opportunity to show our love to those that care for us. Besides the stress that our families have during this season, we have our own personal stress. Students have the stress of exams, finals, and projects on top of their job and athletics. Of course, our children love to schedule (without telling us) social gatherings with their friends. Students, take time to check your phone in at the door and converse with your family. The latest post on Snapchat or Tik Tok is certainly not as important as talking to a human face-to-face. Likewise, this time of year is a stressful time for staff as they attempt to do all of the above: preserving the excitement with their families, seeing the beauty in themselves, creating new beginnings, and grading all of their exams and projects. I am grateful to each of them as they work together to create new routines in new places while serving our mission. With the time constraints of my job, it is so important that I practice what I preach. The students and staff know that they are an extension of my family...but my faith, family, and friends are mission-critical to the daily energy and tasks asked of me as one of the building leaders. Be the best version of yourself to those that matter most and live today with a focus on tomorrow. Screen Time: Recalibrating with Intention![]()
I may not be an eye expert, but I've realized that spending too much time in front of screens can affect my eyes. We've been in the Chromebook Era for over 9 years now, and it's hard to imagine the time Before Chromebooks (BCE) when it comes to academics. These devices have completely transformed education, allowing students and staff to do everything needed for teaching and learning. They're incredible tools that support the learning process, especially since we use Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets, making school more synchronous with instant feedback. Being a 1:1 school has many benefits, but it also comes with the responsibility of teaching digital citizenship and promoting appropriate screen time. Monitoring screen time is crucial.
During the snow day, I checked to see how many students were active online. Throughout the day, we had a peak of 605 users on their Chromebooks. Most students were in Google Classroom, Google Docs, textbooks, and using school resources. It was great to see so many students staying actively engaged on that day. However, it's equally important to slow down screen time when it's not necessary. In our classrooms, we have phone holders, and almost every teacher uses them every period. This has increased attention, dialogue, and engagement. We all need technology throughout our day, but this message is a good reminder for both us and our children to take a break, decompress from screen time, and let our eyes relax. Closing Message : A message for our students![]()
This is an email that I sent to all students yesterday.
We are rounding another milestone of the school year. We just have a few regular school weeks left before we head into the midterm schedule. I have spent much of the last two days working with students. One of the experiences that I enjoy is counseling and advising students. With all of the emotions that we face as students (and staff) outside of the hours of the school day, we often see you and greet you when you are most tired, and lethargic at 7:15 am. Let's be real, mornings are tough for most of us and we are all feeling stressed. Even for the adults that get to school really early--we all need our internal engines to start...and we all have a story that we are bringing to school. This time of year can impact us differently without us even knowing it. The hustle of school, activities, and the holidays can catch us when we are not ready. What is really important is prioritizing the little things, writing things down, and doing what we can with the time we are given--in school, in class, and with the responsibilities that we all face. Always know that you are surrounded by people who care for you and want you to be the most successful that you can be at CHS. It is important to seek out help from your teachers for anything: missing assignments, absences, struggle with understanding, not having the energy, or just having someone to listen to you. Your counselors, coaches, staff, and administrators will make the time to be present for your needs. You just need to ask, or have someone ask for you. We care for you more than you can understand. Take a few moments to reflect on these words, do a little self-reflection internally, and take a deep breath. One step at a time, one moment at a time, and one day at a time. Together, and that's the key word--TOGETHER--we will transcend as Hilltoppers. Oftentimes, I feel that I write to just my internal self since I never know who is reading these emails. It only takes one person to make another feel better in the present moment. With that mantra in my head, I wish you a good night and an even better tomorrow. You are loved! -Murray

We Give Thanks![]()
The last three months have gone by like a whirlwind. The older we get the faster time seems to go by. One of the great things at school is watching kids grow and mature. It is a joy to watch our kids grow up even when we all want the time to slow down.
Time is inevitable. Time can feel like an endless hand moving over each second and time can go before us in an instant. Time is really about how we use it. I can reflect upon the whirlwind of emotions we all have felt during the time we have spent over the last three months. However, today's edition of the Week in Reflection is an opportunity for my team to reflect on our gratitude to our entire Chardon community. There are so many extraordinary athletic and academic accolades that our students have accomplished over the short time that we have been together since August. I am so grateful for the collective efforts our students and staff have embarked upon at this moment in time. Allow this short time away to express gratitude to all those that you love. As principal, I am grateful and love you for who you are, where you are, and where you are going. Keep striving for greatness in all that you do! Ms. Pavicic, Assistant Principal
One of my favorite parts of living in Northeast Ohio are our four seasons. The visible progression of fall, as the leaves change and fall, as nature transitions into winter, seems to pass so quickly, and as much as we would love to cling on to each beautiful fall moment, we have to accept that these moments are temporal and fleeting, with each passing season signifying the beauty of change and its pertinence for balance, growth, and renewal in our lives. Although there is no pause and time is constantly passing us by, we can do our best to enjoy each moment with gratitude knowing that we can hold onto the memories of those moments, and that there is always a beautiful new season to look forward to.
I particularly love this time of year, with Thanksgiving being my favorite holiday, and am grateful to have a day dedicated to spending time with my family and to reflecting on the many gifts in my life. School in particular has been such a gift, as a student, athlete, educator, coach, and now as an educational leader, filled with influential people and lessons learned that I still carry with me to this day. I am grateful to now serve in a role to that allows me to witness the many learning experiences of our students, in the classroom, on the field, and on the stage, and their persistence, diligence, and optimism as they encounter all the joys and challenges those experiences bring, alongside the hard work, dedication, and commitment from our staff and families as they support our students through their journeys. It truly takes a village, nothing is ever achieved alone, and I am so grateful to a part of the Chardon village! I wish all a wonderful, restful, and feastful Thanksgiving! Enjoy the moment! ~Ms. Pavicic Mr. Higham , Assistant Principal
When the smell of the turkey and all the fixings first wafts through the kitchen, your senses perk up with excitement. These simple scents cause a surge of nostalgia. A strong rush of memories of past years fill the room.
At times, these memories make our hearts swell, and they may even produce a feeling of sorrow. Good or bad, this is a driving force of what holidays are about– Thanksgiving specifically. It is universally considered a time of reflection, where we often focus on our blessings and determine how we can support others. As any educator knows, finding the perfect words can be a challenge, especially for a former mathematics teacher. But with the help of the internet , I was able to find this meaningful Thanksgiving quote from Lionel Hampton.. "Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind." Quotes such as this, remind everyone at this time of year that there’s so much more to the holiday than football, turkey, and all the fixins’. However, that last sentence is not completely true because it is that time of year when our mighty Buckeyes beat TTUN! Happy Thanksgiving! ~Mr. Higham Mr. Murray, Principal
Thanksgiving gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the simple things of life. It is important to take the time to reflect on all of the beauty of the semester. Every single day provides for us an opportunity to give, to learn, and to serve. I am forever grateful to the friends that I have as I walk down each hallway. It is easy to call the staff at CHS my friends. The teachers and staff members energize me with their passion for learning and love of our students. I love my staff, and I am forever grateful for their gifts that they provide our students.
One of the best parts of my day is interacting with students. It is hard to believe that we are almost at the halfway point of the school year. We have such wonderful students! I truly love their kindness, energy, creativity, and leadership. I am so grateful for the beauty they give to the Chardon community. I am a better man just by working beside each of them. From sitting with our eighth graders to meeting with our seniors-- I love spending my time with each of them--even with a little more space between us. I am grateful for the support, encouragement, and assistance that our parents have provided not only me, but to our teachers, coaches, and community. This year has aged all of us, but is through your energy that gives me fuel to get through the events we experience every new day. You continue to model servant leadership to each of us! Most importantly, I am grateful to my beautiful family that sacrifice so much to be with me. They haven't seen me a ton, but they know how much I love them. My wife is truly my best friend. She is beside me at many events, and she knows how to keep me balanced in all that I do in/out of school. I am blessed to have a Chardon graduate, and another daughter at Chardon, and I look forward to sharing many memories with them as they grow and continue to bless our family. Thanksgiving is an opportunity to give thanks to the simple things in life: family, friends and familiar fellowship. Let this day be a reminder of how the simple things in life are the strongest reminders of why we work, why we give, and why we serve. Have a beautiful week with your family! -Mr. Murray Topper Club Awards![]()
Our core values recognize Achievement as an essential benchmark of the learning that transpires every day at Chardon High School. We have extraordinary educators that prepare our students for college, career, and life readiness. Our students refine their learning in the classroom and demonstrate their abilities in so many skill sets in extra-curriculars, service, and clubs.
It is our goal that every single person at Chardon High School will graduate finding their purpose. The programs and experiences that you experience at Chardon from grades 8-12 expose you to opportunities to achieve this purpose. More importantly, the relationships that you develop are paramount in your development. Every student matters to us. Taking the time to celebrate achievement collectively provides us the motivation and encouragement to push and strive for success ---so that every student will find their outcome after walking across the stage to further education, immediate employment, enlistment into our armed forces, and even delving into becoming a young entrepreneur. Today, we will celebrate many moments of achievement. Being a part of the Topper Club is an extraordinary accomplishment. Our students being recognized this morning have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. Each day, we are educating the future leaders of our ever-changing world. Together, we are witnessing the development of engineers, doctors, lawyers, educators, chemists, advanced manufacturers, cosmetologists, medics, leaders, and philanthropists who see the good in others and respond to the needs of others. We are grateful for their leadership and look forward to the many ways that they will serve our school in the present and the future. The Principal's Award is one of the highest honors for a student to achieve. Being recognized as a student who embodies the core values is an honor that has no classroom or state assessment connected to it. A committee nominated students throughout the year for modeling our values. This year, we are recognizing the following students who model the character and commitment to serve others and use their gifts to embrace Community, Humility, Achievement, Respect, Dignity, Optimism, and Nurture as they live these values in and out of school.
The following students have earned the Principal's Award this year:

Over the past three weeks, I have been connected to our students in providing communications, counseling, and service to our mission. Mr. Higham, Ms. Pavicic, and I have taken time to meet with numerous students to discuss academics, relationships, messages, and behaviors.
Many of the tasks that the administration works on are unnoticed by many, but they are done out of a commitment to you, our students, and our school. We do this while balancing our own family life. While we work behind the scenes, our CHS staff are the extraordinary men and women who are serving students between the lines. They have been assisting me, our assistant principals, and teachers while we manage and lead through teaching and covering classes, lending a hand with supervision, and assisting students with their needs. At our core, community driven values and relationships carry the beacon that drives our success. The phrase that breathes energy in our building is Chardon Strong. This mantra is best understood in the following ways: We are Chardon. To live our values means that we are defined by our response to any outcome. We have modeled this for generations of students and parents towards how we respond to difficulty. We are a community in good and bad times who will live with integrity. We have been consistently humbled in our response to moments of success, doubt, and difficulty. We are a district that demonstrates achievement in our outcomes to the state, and outreach to our community and nation. We model respect in our success and failures and how we respond to each other. We recognize the value of seeing the dignity and honor of all of the students and staff members that we encounter. Most importantly, we are optimistic for tomorrow by living our purpose today as we nurture each other. More than ever, we need to nurture each other. ![]()
We are Chardon...you cannot be built much tougher-but, it doesn't make us superheroes that are invincible to emotion. We all feel, we are hurt, and we all share the same passion for our kids. This week, our friends at Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools are in mourning after the tragic bus accident that occurred on Tuesday. That evening, I sent the principal a message on behalf of our staff sharing that we would keep his community in our intentions. No words can express how sad this is for their district.
As we transition into a short two day week next week, take the time to give thanks to someone who has made a difference in your life this school year. Hug them, thank them, encourage them, and embrace moments when you can make another person feel better because of your presence. The Schedule for Next Week

Design for Student Success
Students, the next three weeks are go to move very quickly. The second quarter ends on December 20th. In order to navigate the last three weeks of the quarter successfully, it's crucial to implement a student-centered organizational plan that prioritizes effective time management.
Here is Murray's Simple 7 ---I guarantee that it will create habits to dominate the quarter:
By adhering to this student-centered approach, you'll be well-prepared for the culmination of the semester and can approach finals with confidence and ease. Have a beautiful weekend with family and friends! Douglas Murray, Principal 11/10/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 11/10/23Duty and Honor
At the end of World War 1, the armistice between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, became the official day to celebrate all our nation’s veterans. Originally called Armistice Day, it became Veteran’s Day after World War II.
In his speech before assembled West Point cadets, General MacArthur, who reminisced of his 30 plus years of military service, said, " Duty, Honor, Country...those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying points: to build courage when courage seems to fail; to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith; to create hope when hope becomes forlorn." As the general further states in his speech about those three words, "these are some of the things they do. They build your basic character. They mold you for your future roles as the custodians of the nation's defense. They make you strong enough to know when you are weak, and brave enough to face yourself when you are afraid. They teach you to be proud and unbending in honest failure, but humble and gentle in success; not to substitute words for actions, not to seek the path of comfort, but to face the stress and spur of difficulty and challenge." These words resonate today more than ever. Building character, being brave, being humble, and serving others are pillars of humanity. Veterans Day is more than a recognition by athletic teams, going to parades, or services. Veteran's Day is an opportunity to show gratitude and model respect, show honor, and dignity to not only veterans but to each other. Language Arts LIVE
About Language Arts Live!
Language Arts Live! is a speaker and resource program which provides students with examples of how the knowledge they acquire in the classroom translates to the professional world and life beyond high school. The objectives are for students to better understand the various reading, writing, and communication skills, as well as 21st century skills such as the 4Cs (critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity) they are currently learning and to then be able to apply these skills meaningfully to their lives.

Students in Dr. Schneider's AP Environmental Science class maximized on this weather by continuing with their stream survey assessing and evaluating the stream ecosystem (beyond the Tennis Courts) to understand its ecological health and the impact of human activities on it. The goal of any stream survey is to assess the environmental health of a stream ecosystem, identify potential issues, and propose solutions to mitigate or address those issues. It provides a practical application of ecological concepts on the AP test and helps students understand the real-world implications of environmental science.

In Senora Tekavec's Spanish III class, students embarked on a unique and engaging lesson that seamlessly connected practical life skills with the standards set in the Spanish III curriculum. This innovative approach to language learning saw students spending time in the kitchen during block days, working together to complete the "Receta de las Tortilla," a traditional Spanish omelet recipe.
This hands-on experience not only applied some culinary skills but also served as a platform to reinforce and apply their understanding of the Spanish language and culture. I was blessed to be the Gordon Ramsey throughout the day as kids brought their dishes for me to try. |

Closing Message
Time is a gift. How you use it is the lifelong question.
The most important thing we must all do is cherish the time we spend by taking moments each day to celebrate the beauty of the silence and to reflect on our surroundings.
We all make countless decisions all day long and our brain is constantly firing. Some people think that certain people are superhuman with their ability to maximize upon the time that we are all given. After each day, we all share the same quantified minutes, but is the quality of the minutes that defines who we are. We all can be consumed with tasks--I am not shy to that. However, scheduling moments for ourselves to rejuvenate-along with scheduling moments to celebrate are so important. For our parents that have seniors graduating in May, we have exhausted one quarter of our time with our children. Take these moments throughout each season to celebrate family. Our time is the one thing that we can control. Schedule it, preserve it, and pause while embracing today.
Have a beautiful weekend with your family and friends!

The Week in Reflection: 10/20
Opening Message
Including others, saying hello, calling, facetime, a simple snapchat message may make someone's day. Being present is even more important. When we are actively present we seek to understand a friend's needs and we listen. Being physically present is the start---being emotionally present can change your relationships.
The time that we have shared this quarter together is a gift, and an opportunity to give of ourselves. It is so important to spend your time wisely in the classroom and manage the time that you have outside of school or the workplace.
When we take the time to add beauty to someone's day we are actually mirroring that beauty in us. The more that we do it, the more that it becomes a habit. Kindness becomes the transferable agent that we want to be passed on within the building. It reflects our true self and our core values.
Spread kindness everywhere and let it become the change that you want to see in your world and others. It is free, simple, and changes more than you can know!

- No weapons may be used with the costume.
- Do not cover your face or head with any character coverings of any kind.
- Halloween make-up/ should be kept to a minimum. We must be able to identify our students for safety reasons.
- There will be no bare midriffs, or risqué costumes.

- The best costumes are coordinated in groups

From your perspective, how did your son(s) or daughter(s) succeed and make strides in their performance this quarter? What worked? What struggles did you notice? How was their time used?
Chances are if you are still reading this...you truly care about the performance of your children. We all do.
So as you reflect on the closure of one quarter, let's reflect on a few essential questions.
Describe your goals for the quarter, how you made them visible, and how they were communicated to others?
Articulate the steps that you managed your time for school, sports, work, family and family time.
Reflect on how you communicated to your teachers when you were stuck, confused, or needed help.
How did you celebrate success?
In closing to the Week in Reflection, the significance of setting goals cannot be overstated. Goals serve as a crucial compass that directs our focus toward what truly matters, enabling us to maximize the value of each day. When approached thoughtfully, they compel us to step out of our comfort zones, fostering personal growth that would otherwise remain untapped. By simply establishing a goal, we actively engage in the pursuit of enhanced outcomes in our lives, a pursuit of paramount importance. Teaching our children the art of effective goal-setting can be a transformative experience. However, it is imperative that we guide them in harnessing the full potential of goals, ensuring that these objectives yield the most profound positive impact on their lives. We can encourage and guide them each day, but the choice and response has to be desired. Together, we can continue to model this for our children and students that we care so deeply for.

The Week in Reflection: 10/13
Opening: Live Simply

I appreciate all of you for who you are and what you have accomplished this quarter. We have so many things to be grateful for each day. When you stop and think about the simple things in life, you reflect on all those areas of your life that transcend us to who we are.
Live Simply
In the complex world in which we live, the noise can often surround us from all sides. Living simply can allow us to disconnect from the noise. Organizational effectiveness and proper planning is never simple. This work gives us the purpose to expand our territory in order to handle all of our responsibilities. However, inside of the planning, it is important to be mindful of how you are doing and to take the time to breathe, reflect, and rejuvenate your energy. This reminder of living simply can benefit not only students but any adult running through a tight schedule.
Dream Big
Living in the moment is a phrase that we rehearse and apply from the direction of our parents and adult mentors. This phrase is often used to ground us from daydreaming. For example, when I was younger I wanted to be a professional baseball player. Our dreams certainly can become a reality. What draws out of our creative energies is not only an appreciation of likes, talents, and desires---but, and expansion of our thoughts--hopes-- and work ethics. Instead of being a professional baseball player, I was able to play in college, became a varsity coach, win two state titles, and now I have evolved into a travel softball coach for ten years. Dreaming big is not a lost art, it is the fabric that allows us to critically think, innovate and evolve ourselves while still living our dream intentionally.
Be Grateful
If a person takes the time to express their heartfelt appreciation for something we have done, it boosts our spirit, passion, and purpose. It builds our self-confidence, self-esteem and our entire self-image. It gives us energy and motivation to work harder and do more. Find moments to share your gratitude for others and watch how contagious it can become. Be the reason that someone smiles today.
Give Love
Take the time to thank those that love you. Write them a note, call them, send a text. Likewise, as hard as it is, be mindful of those that might not be as kind to you and model kindness. When you look in the mirror, remind yourself of your own beauty. Life is so short. When we pause in the present moment, we take the time to appreciate all of the little things around us. Never take for granted your time with others.
Laugh Lots
The best medicine for a rough day is laughter! Celebrate the simple things and laugh! Humor can go a long way to refresh your energy and celebrate each other.
What we value becomes a reflection of our thoughts, deeds, and actions. So, practice kindness, appreciation, and make another person feel better by your presence. That becomes the gift that energizes others to live their purpose.
While we take time to reflect on our vision for ourselves, we also have to stop and look at where we are at the current mile markers in our life. The present moment allows our future to become more of a reality. We have ONE week to make certain that we are all squared away for the quarter. Take time this weekend to review Infinite Campus get any residual work done this weekend.

Fall Choir Concert
The 8th Grade Choir included a piece celebrating music, an uptempo spiritual, and a piece celebrating each of our individual contributions titled "Glorious". "Glorious" featured 7 student soloists and our guest strings. Treble Choir shared a powerful song titled "Does the World Say?" that speaks to the many distractions and chatter of the world around us. All of the false expectations and downplay of our potential contributions. The song then shares "I've been there too" as the group works together to overcome the "chatter" and to unite and raise up a positive spirit. The Treble Choir also shared a piece "The Rose" which feels very thematic, like a movie soundtrack. The Treble Choir finished their set with "Bring Me Little Water Silvy" a great folk-style tune featuring soloists, body percussion, and our guest bass player. Chorale opened their set with a famous lush choral work titled "Set Me As A Seal". They then shared the text of the Spice Girls song "Wannabe" featured in a madrigal style. They closed with a powerful piece titled "Measure Me Sky" which features soaring and complex vocal harmonies with supportive arpeggiated piano parts. We joined our efforts with 115 singers in our Mass Ensemble to finish the program. We shared "Wide Open Spaces" developed during our recent "Chardon Sings Day", prompting hope in our future, and ended with "Tuba" a celebratory song from South African.
Congratulations to the CHS Choirs for their hard work and the culmination of a beautiful concert! We have a wonderful year ahead!

Class of 2024 Parents: A Message from Chardon After Prom
Chardon After Prom has been busy raising money through concessions to fully fund the 2024 After Prom for CHS seniors and their guests on Saturday, May 11 from 11:00 pm to 2:00 am at the high school. For those not familiar with After Prom, it is a long-standing tradition at Chardon featuring games, prizes, music, and refreshments that provides students with a safe alternative following the Prom dance.
Chardon After Prom is in need of senior parent volunteers to begin planning this event. Please consider attending our next After Prom Meeting on Wednesday, October 11 at 7:00 pm in the CHS Media Center so we can get the ball rolling.
We will need a senior parent (or group of senior parents) to chair the event this year, which mainly involves:
- Finding parent volunteers to run the various subcommittees,
- Scheduling decorating workshops, as needed, in the spring,
- Communicating event details to students and administration, and
- Overseeing the set-up, event, and tear-down the weekend of May 10-12.
To make planning much easier, we have:
- Past After Prom volunteers willing to take on various subcommittees if not filled by a senior parent.
- Saved decorations in line with the Game Night theme that can easily be reused for this year's After Prom.
- Last year's event chair who has offered to come back and guide the 2024 senior parent chair(s) through the planning process.

Finish What you Start
Time constantly moves. Time is inevitable. How we use it is our choice. When life is broken down into small parts, it really is measured in how we use our time to accomplish what we want to accomplish. Many people ask how I can manage the many things that I am involved in and still accomplish things. It boils down to time management and prioritizing people and moments, over things. We have two weeks to refine ourselves this quarter- academically. Maximize on prioritizing on the little things and big things will happen by the nature of how we use our time.
Being present is mission-critical to how we use our time. Sure, I can accomplish all of these things in a day but if my wife and I miss out on our kids activities or experiences, we would place things over people. In the world that we live in, it it through people that we feel connected and part of something bigger. Be present in the little things and great things will happen in your relationships. Life moves very quickly and nothing is guaranteed so seize every moment in front of you and be the person that you are called to be: BE YOU!
Have a wonderful weekend!

The Week in Reflection:10/6
The words that I wrote years ago (on that board) have not changed. However, the actions between the words have evolved during my time as an educator. I truly believe in the power of a life filled with purpose and intentionality.
The last line on the chalkboard is "finish what I start."
Students and staff know that I preach the "finish line." More recently, students have been hearing me asked them how they are striving for high achievement. As an educator and coach, I believe that the standard is the standard, and we must model and refine ourselves throughout the process to the finish line.
We must maintain our focus through the finish line with being mindful of our personal well-being. Our students need to believe that failure is not an option.
We are nearing the first mile marker of the year. On Friday, October 20, the end of the quarter completes. It is essential that students reach out to their teachers during this upcoming week to maximize on their educational goals for the quarter. Take the time this weekend to touch base with your son(s) and daughter(s) regarding assessments and checkpoints inside of Infinite Campus.
Chardon Community Cares

Our school district is fortunate to have a number of professionals trained to help with the needs of students and families during difficult times like this. In addition, our local community has numerous agencies and emergency services available to provide support. We encourage you, as parents, to feel free to use these resources.

This week in Physics, under the guidance of Dr. Schneider, students engage in an exciting lesson on projectile motion and 1-D motion using Nerf rockets. This hands-on study explores the principles of physics as students launch Nerf rockets and analyze their velocity, trajectory, and one-dimensional motion. Through practical experiments and data collection, students gain a deeper understanding of fundamental physics concepts, honing their analytical skills and scientific reasoning. This engaging and interactive approach to learning not only fosters a passion for STEM but also equips students with valuable problem-solving abilities that will serve them well in their academic and future endeavors.

Together, along with several of their teachers, they played games, shared positive personal stories, and began planning how they will spread messages of Hope, Help, and Strength to the whole school throughout the year.
Stay tuned to hear more from this awesome group of leaders as we head into the 2nd Quarter! |

Please reach out to me with questions at chardonafterprom@gmail.com.
We hope to see you at the After Prom meeting on October 11!

Closing: A message for our students

Why is it so invigorating? Maybe it is because we spent so much time preparing for this year and now we are able to see everything come to fruition. Maybe it is related to all of the activities that we have designed for students. What strikes me the most is the number of students that we are able to assist in the journey.
I really love working with students and helping them find their purpose in life. Every single one of you will eventually graduate and I hope that through the courses and experiences at CHS-- your journey will help you find your purpose in life.
I believe in each of you and I know that everyone has a story along the way. We are closing out the first quarter...this is a time to assess your goals and outcomes. Finish strong all the way through the finish line!
I will be the first to tell you that grades are not the "tell-all" to school. Learning is what matters the most. Yet, our country places so much emphasis on the mark in a grade book. Certainly, having a positive mark in the grade book helps out in many ways. It helps your motivation, relationships, and may even keep you from being grounded. Grades can get you places...but learning takes you places where grades can't take you.
For me, I was just your average 3.0 Chardon High Student...but, I was involved in so many activities in school. I also had a story. Life wasn't perfect for me. I have faced many situations in my life that were difficult. Yet, I dug deep to focus on finding my purpose.
I didn't have a principal that wrote me emails or reflections. I have felt just about every emotion that you have. Look at me now--several college degrees later and numerous experiences brought me back as principal of CHS. Anything is possible if you put the time in.
We all find ourselves at various plots on the graph of life.
The purpose of this closing message is to remind you that we care deeply for your success and we hope that you have taken the time to see the goodness in you; in others.
We are nearing the first stage of a four-part race. If you are satisfied with the pending outcome of the first quarter--keep striving for greatness. If you have experienced some victories and losses this quarter--keep striving. If you have more losses than victories--keep striving.
You got this! Your teachers, counselors, and principals will always be one of your biggest fans!
Your teachers will always be there for you--take the time to continue building your relationships with them. They care so deeply for you! If you ever need them to assist you--just ask. Use this weekend to get caught up!
Reflect on this quarter and continue to strive for where you want to be. We will always guide you with your courses, time management skills, and social-emotional needs.
Make today count, and finish what you start!

The Week in Reflection 9/29
Opening: Choose Your Response

As we spent most of our time indoors this week, we all felt the change in the air at the book ends of the day with the transition to Fall. When you reflect on our area in northeast Ohio, it can be easy to reactive to the change in seasons. Some love this time of year, some want summer to stay, and some are ready for winter. There are times where we all wish we could control the weather. The one thing that we learn over time is to prepare for, and choose our response to the weather. This transitions to my main point to the opening of the Week in Reflection---Choosing our response to the events that we face in life determines the outcomes that we face in life.
Our choices are one thing that we can control. Our actions emulate our choices, and our character defines our lives. This mantra helps define our purpose. I am a big advocate of empowering students, and adults all of the time.
One of the biggest questions that our children asked at an early age was "why!?" Why does this happen, Why does this do that, or Why are we going here...to a simple-- why does why, why!
Asking probing questions enhances our curiosity throughout life. Many years ago, you chose Chardon as a place to live. You valued the beauty, community, safety, opportunity, and education. There are many other factors that played a role in your decision to choose Chardon Schools, and you entrust us in preparing your children for college, career, and life readiness.
We are at the dawn of the first finish line. Take the time to discuss where your son(s)/daughter(s) are during the first quarter, and the ways that we can continue to support their learning. Our teachers are committed to serve, assist, and guide your children in any way possible. Make sure to reach out to them if you ever need anything. The more they know--the better that they can respond.
Homecoming Success
Their attention to detail from July through yesterday morning was so well planned. We welcomed over 700 students to CHS for an incredible evening and the work they put in to make our school polished for this morning took a crew hours after they danced the night away.
Extraordinary planning, and leadership!

National Merit Scholarship Program: Commended Students
Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT® Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit® Scholarship Program. In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.
Commended Students
In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semifinalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Congratulations to Timothy Meleski and Thomas Wilkinson for being recognized as commended students!
