5/15/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection 5/19Final Reflection of 2023![]()
Reflection is an important act that regardless of your profession or role, is something that we all need to take part in regularly. On a daily basis, the interactions we have, the actions we take, and the decisions we make, likely have an impact on someone else, ourselves, or others that we may never be aware of. Personally, reflecting was not something that I had always done. Nowadays it is all that I do. Lucky for you [eye-roll intended] my thoughts come once a week in this newsletter. However, as a student in high school and growing up, the only time that I felt like reflecting was on Sunday mornings. Little did I know that reflecting once a week would begin a journey for me.
As a teacher, for many of my beginning years, colleagues would ask for my thoughts on a lesson that I had taught, or my principal would discuss an observation with me and ask me to reflect on my lesson. But other than those experiences, reflecting was not something that I could say I did on a regular basis. I was not intentional about it and did not fully realize the importance of doing so for many years. No single event transformed me into a reflective learner--but a culmination of many things: teaching, coaching, working, and children. My eyes began to open to a much bigger world and my place within it. In 2003, I began to write more and I modeled this for my students as they began to journal, I made sure that every assignment had a purpose of engagement and my students began to blossom as readers, thinkers, and writers. It was that year that I was nominated to speak to the students at Commencement. From that point forward, almost everything that I did was reflective. I became very involved in community engagement while reflecting on each experience as an opportunity to grow as a person. It just became my thing. In order to bring our personal best into our classrooms each day, we (students and staff) must evaluate our own practice and use a reflective process to grow as people. We also need to help each other develop these skills. It is important that we model reflection and provide different ways for our children to reflect as well. Not only will we help them build their skills, become self-aware and develop a greater understanding of their interests and needs, but we will also provide them with learning experiences that will benefit them in the future regardless of where their education takes them or which careers they pursue later on in life. Looking back at this year, it is hard to reflect upon the tens of thousands of printed pages from the Week in Reflection this year. It is a daunting novel, with a true beginning, a flood in the middle, and the 150th finish line next week. This first finish line doesn't have an ending for the Class of 2023. A perfect reminder was a phone call that I took this week while talking to a member of the Class of 1973. This call reminded me how connections, community, and traditions never graduate. This first finish line allows for new stories to develop from the class of 2023 while the rest of the student body writes their story. I really love and appreciate all of our students for who they are, where they are, and where they are going. Reflecting is important for all of us because it’s how we evaluate our actions. We can explore who we are, whether looking at the qualities and traits that we convey to others, our behaviors, and how we interact with other people. It’s important that we continue to understand ourselves and work on bringing our best selves to our families every day and to those with whom we work. When we work on this together, we will have it become a regular part of our daily practice and will continue to grow. I believe in all of you and my hope is that you take time after exams to regroup, re-energize, and renew your purpose! With love, -Murray Prom Success
Thank You from Chardon After Prom
Thank you to ALL of the parent & student volunteers who helped to make After Prom 2023: Game Night a success! Whether you worked the concession stand to help raise funds, helped with event planning, set-up, tear-down, or working a station at After Prom on Saturday, your contributions are greatly appreciated. Thank you to Mr. Murray, Mr. Higham and the CHS custodial staff for accommodating us in so many ways. Thanks to Dave Jevnikar of G-TV for capturing the night, and event emcee, Greg Jahnke. Thanks to our event committee chairs: Cori Bruce, Lisa DeMore, Beth Felger, Heather Kilfoyle, Maureen Liechty, Jen Murray, Tiffanie Petty, Gina Piotrkowski, Debi Robie, Tonia Seese, and Kathi Tierney. Also, a big thanks to our many sponsors and donors for their generosity! We appreciate your time, energy, and hard work! Marijana Benjamin & Michelle Fisher Want to get involved? Many of our After Prom volunteers are "retiring" this May as their youngest child will be graduating from CHS. We are looking for the next round of parents to bring new energy and ideas to our organization. In addition to hosting After Prom, our committee funds scholarships and other student engagement activities that benefit all CHS students. You don't have to wait until your student is a junior or senior to start volunteering for After Prom. The money that we raise this school year will be earmarked for the next 4-5 years of After Prom events. We have some key roles to fill for the upcoming school year. All of these roles (except treasurer) can be split between two co-chairs
Visit our website for more details about each of these positions Don’t wait until your student is a senior or junior to start volunteering with Chardon After Prom. Many of our volunteers are parents of sophomores, freshmen, or even alumni! Money raised through next year’s concessions will be earmarked for future events. One of the most moving moments of my week was chaperoning 130 seniors watch the sunset at Chardon Memorial Field one last night. I cannot express how moving this was for me. These kids are so amazing, so kind, and so inspirational. They have truly left their legacy!

Graduation Rehearsal
Because commencement exercises are conducted in a formal, ceremonial fashion, it is mandatory that all seniors be in attendance for rehearsal. *Seniors who do not attend rehearsal will not be permitted to participate in the graduation ceremony. Rehearsal is scheduled on Friday, May 26, 2023, at Chardon Memorial Field beginning at 10:00 am. If it rains, we will be inside the gym for rehearsal. Let's hope the forecast stays as predicted for next week! Because there is so much organizing to be done to make the ceremony a positive experience, we need to have the cooperation of all students involved. Graduation Exercises Graduation exercises will be held at Chardon Memorial Field on Saturday May 27, at 1:00 p.m. Each graduating senior will receive (8) eight tickets to be issued at commencement practice on Friday, May 26, 2023. School Fees
As we transition to the last full week of the school year, it is important that parents/guardians review any outstanding school fees prior to the end of the year. I appreciate you going through Infinite Campus and administering payments throughout the year. Every year that fees are not addressed they can add up to a fee total that can be overbearing. By the end of the senior year, the district must close out all fees that are remaining. Please review any outstanding fees and make payment by the end of the school year for grades 8-12.
Chardon High School can hold transcripts upon graduation to a post secondary institution for non-payment of fees,. Please review the statement and continue to use Infinite Campus to review and pay fees. If you need access to Infinite Campus, please go to the Chardon Schools website under the resources section to learn more about access information to Infinite Campus and paying fees online. If you have questions about your invoice, please contact Erin Koehler, Chardon High School Clerk at 440-285-4057 X. 1441 or email her at erin.koehler@chardonschools.org 150th Commencement

Class of 2023: Parting Words![]()
During the last year or so, after your parents first realized that the rest of your life had inexplicably sped past, they tried not to be obvious. But maybe you noticed. In spite of all that you were going through in school, sports, and even at work, your family tried to slow the calendar, stop the clock. They were trying, of course, to hang on to you.
The very thing that they committed to year’s ago- rearing, raising, training you for independence- your parents now began to fear. I’m sure some may have been emotional; they may have been firm, or even built walls between you. Every sign that indicated you had learned and matured and were ready to face the world only reminded them how young you seemed. But your parents couldn’t run from the truth. You were leaving and the day was coming soon. Some of your parents may have been so desperate to hang on that they couldn’t even exult in your growth and progress. Why, you ask, a lot of it was due to your maddening independence, that I-can-do-it-myself attitude that reminded both of them so much of their own adolescence, or even that look that asked, “Why do you have to know everything?” or “What does it matter to you?” may have cemented in their aching heart the truth: You had become your own person. It’s what they had wanted. But, your time together this year went by too quickly. There may have been days when they didn’t want it at all. Yet, throughout all the fights over applications, and deadlines, your parents knew that this was for the best. It’s time. And maybe from their perspective, there will never be a good time. Your parents have realized that the longer they hang on to you, the more they protect you from the real world. If you don’t jump in, you’ll never find yourself. And so they must nudge you from the nest. Seeing you leave for college or your career may remind them of the first time they let you go in the water. Only this time they are not going to be at arm’s length, ready to grab as you panic. They will not stand by with reassuring words that say, “I’m just seeing if you can float alone.” For this is the real thing. Your parents will let you go; you will be on your own, and they will back away. The other metaphor that may come to mind is your first time on two wheels. Mom or dad ran along beside, reaching, adjusting, holding the seat, helping you gain momentum and speed. Soon you were on your wobbly way, unable to turn, riding through puddles, over curbs, slowing to painful, tumbling stops before leaping up to try again. Now they will give your two-wheeler one last shove and watch. No more running alongside. You had enough of that. You won’t admit it, but there will be times when you whirl around expecting your parents to be there. They won't be, and you will think twice about calling, about asking to be bailed out of a jam. There will be bumps and bruises and as much as they would like to protect you from them, your parents will walk away to see you grow. You may be swindled, maybe even endangered because of your own innocence. Your parents could intervene, could warn you, or could slow you on a headlong path to believing someone because “he seemed like a great guy, or she seemed like a great girl.” They could urge you to let time be the test of relationships, to think twice, even three times, before investing in anything. But you must learn from your own mistakes. Your parents and teachers know because they have been there. We all have gone against our own better judgment, so why shouldn’t you? Even I knew better, or should have. I have been told enough times by my own parents. But some things you must learn on your own. You may fail, and you will kick yourself and wonder why you forged ahead. There will come a time that you will know that your life was shaped by the lessons you could learn only from your own mistakes. Graduates of 2023, I am at an age, where I finally can realize the wisdom, encouragement, and love that a parent gives to a child. As a parent of two beautiful daughters--the love shared between parents to their children is never a superficial root that may drive you away from their love, but a permanent foundation that grants you the opportunity to blossom into an adult. You must realize that as you transition into a new chapter of your life, your parents, brothers, sisters, and even your friends are going through the same transition. I know that your parents are so proud of you. Even through the good and bad times of this year, you have grown in such a way that radiates the beauty of every one of you. Graduates, look around. You are so gifted and talented. Your class emulates success. Academically, athletically, socially, and within the community, Your parents, and teachers have watched you grow daily and we are so proud to honor you today in your accomplishments. Many people state that you are the future. You are more than that. You Are The Strength Of Today. Forever in my heart, Mr. Murray
As we close out a successful year and transition into final exams, please know how much I appreciate you and wish for you a restful and relaxing time with your family and friends. All communications next week with come in direct communications to parents and grade levels. The Week in Reflection will return in August. If you need anything after we close out the year, I will be in the office all summer.

5/8/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 5/12I think I can. I think I can
The Little Engine That Could is an American folktale that became widely known in the United States after publication in 1930 by Platt & Munk. The story is used to teach children the value of optimism and hard work.
One of the key lines from the book is I think I can, I think I can. Throughout the week, this mantra crossed many of our minds at CHS. With the beautiful weather surrounding this week, the last round of AP testing, Spirit Week, Prom, After Prom, Playoffs, Senior Awards, and literally 87 make-up tests--it was a marathon. A good marathon for adults certainly has benefits, but many students and staff alike are longing for the finish line. We will get there, but the mantra needs to change from I think I can to I know I will. There are so many events that have either happened this week, this weekend or leading into next week that is important to read these details carefully. Make today great! 2023 Commencement Speaker: Chief Scott Niehus

Chief Scott Niehus is the epitome of what is means to be selfless leader. He was born, raised and educated in Chardon. A man that takes pride in the simple things in life: duty, honor, pride, integrity, and service. A man that understands the values instilled in this community. A man who shows empathy and humility in all of his actions. He is a true friend, and supporter of the school which help raise him.
Chief Niehus is a Chardon High School graduate, a life-long community member, husband, father, and our city’s eighth police chief. In addition to his work with the police department, Chief Niehus is involved in various community organizations, including the Chardon Rotary Club and the Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce. We are very excited to welcome Chief Scott Niehus during our 2023 Commencement Address.

Key Resources to Review
SNHS: A Message From Morghan Kuzma
I’m happy to announce that CHS now offers a new organization for science minded students who want to explore careers in science, get hands-on in-person experience, mentor underclassmen, and to give to our school community. Chardon is starting a Chapter of Science National Honors Society. Similar to NHS, SNHS will launch in school year 2023-2024 for current sophomores going into their junior year, and juniors going into their senior year. SNHS candidates must have a 3.0 GPA or higher with a B average currently enrolled in an Honors or AP science class. As a member of SNHS, we will participate in the planning of the CMS science fair, research interesting scientific current events, and learn about careers in science from guest speakers from such as a physicists, biochemists or soil ecologists. All SNHS members will be required to complete one hour of tutoring each quarter, which can also go toward NHS hour requirements. This is an incredible opportunity to join Ohio’s second SNHS right here at CHS! Not only will this be impressive on college applications but SNHS is a scholarship granting body, and can connect students to research opportunities in the area. Interested in learning more? Contact Morghan Kuzma to learn about our informational meeting!

The Week in Reflection: 4/28
The Work of our Hands

It is impossible to know from external appearances what kinds of interior burdens people carry with them throughout life. In fact, if we knew the inside story of most people’s lives, we would gain a deep reverence for them and a respect for their perseverance through the difficulties that only they have experienced and that only they know.
Our hands tell a story. Our hands are more than just functional tools that help us perform daily tasks; they are a physical manifestation of our experiences, our journeys, and our stories. Every wrinkle, scar, and callus on our hands tells a tale of hard work, perseverance, and resilience. From the delicate hands of an artist to the rough, weathered hands of a farmer or mechanic, our hands reveal the unique paths we have taken in life, and the challenges we have overcome along the way.
The last few weeks of school will provide an opportunity to use our hands to demonstrate so many accomplishments. The hands of hard work will determine the outcomes that we desire. Embrace these moments, even through the discomfort. The hard work and sacrifice that you put in today will provide endless opportunities tomorrow. Make today a work of your hands.

The Schedule For Next Week: (Special Schedule for Testing)
Chardon High School began to administer the end-of-course assessments to measure the academic progress of students. We will be having a unique schedule to accommodate for these tests as noted above. Please take the time to review the schedule. The teachers and students have prepared for these tests throughout the standards, lesson, assessments, and state benchmarks this year.
These state achievement tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. These tests help guide and strengthen future teaching so we can be sure that we are preparing our students for long-term success in school, college, careers and life.
I was able to go into every single course that is testing this week to remind the students of the things that we can control: Our attitude, effort, and approach to these tests. I was so impressed with their attention and left feeling great about the work our students and teachers put in to getting the students to this point. We have great students!
Transportation will run at regular times throughout testing. All Auburn Students will take their tests during the time we have scheduled at Chardon High School. All grade levels not testing will have a late start; Seniors must complete their capstone projects. Please watch the video below for additional details.
Which tests will be given for what grade level? (See the schedule online)

2023 New York City Latino-Themed Trip - April 20-22, 2023
The 2023 CHS World Language Department NYC Adventure was a success! Over 3 exciting days, 47 Spanish language students, parents, and teachers explored the amazing sites and sounds of ¨La Manzana Grande¨(The Big Apple¨).
¨The Spanish NYC trip was a highlight of my high school years and something I'll always remember. In just three days, we toured the Statue of LIberty, had an amazing view atop the Freedom Tower, took the Roosevelt Island cable car up into the sky and through the skyscrapers, laughed while learning Spanish dances, put our Spanish knowledge to use while exploring Spanish Harlem with a native tour guide, experienced Times Square, and much more! I loved traveling with all grades from CHS and talking with students I've never met before. Thank you Senora Niedzwiecki, Senora Tekavec, Madame, and the many chaperones for taking us on this trip and giving CHS students this opportunity.¨ - Julianne Sweet, CHS Senior & Spanish 5 student

Senior Capstone Projects
As we are in full swing of Senior Capstone season, I will be sharing opportunities for our Chardon Community to participate in ways to give back to our community. The enclosed senior capstone project has been in the works for the last few months. Sarah Sutton is a senior who participates in many school activities. One of her passions is softball. At the end of the month, Sarah has a project that includes collecting used softball equipment that will benefit kids in need of equipment in our community and beyond. Consider joining her cause and take a swing at this awesome cause.
A group of seniors organized by Noah Paller will be collecting used and unwanted clothing in a bin within the cafeteria from Wednesday April 26 to Friday April 28. All clothing will be donated to the non-profit organization Thriving Threads. This groups goal is to collect 100 pieces of clothing.
A large group of seniors (with team leads- Anna Landies and Sidney Nagaj) are putting together their capstone project for a good cause. Consider coming to Chardon Memorial Stadium on May 7th at 5:00pm to watch some of the most athletic players in our school battle for the notoriety and bragging rights of Queens of the Gridiron. Admission to the game is a canned good item.

The Week in Reflection 4/21
The Final Push
Time. This is one thing that is always inevitable. Yet, this one thing can be experienced differently by each of us. It is hard to believe how quickly our time has passed. Every second inside of every minute can pass how we choose to use it. If we chose to stare at a clock, time would feel like forever. The more we are all actively involved with tasks, events, and enjoyment--the faster time is experienced by each of us. The old adage, "Time flies when you are having fun" rings a persistent tone this time of year. Why? Mostly due to the constant movement, experiences, events, and activities that happen inside of the time that we are given. The last three months have been packed with events each week, and it feels like days turn into weeks this time of the year. It is hard to stop the clock, but we must embrace the moments of the time we are given. Our time is too precious and short to let these pass by with our children. I have learned from many adult "sages" about our time with our children. Many of them remind me and our parents that these moments are like gold. We need to cherish the deposits we have before they pass by. Most recently, I spoke to the senior class about all of the memories that they are making and how these moments should be cherished and remembered. These are great days for our class of 2023! To think that the seniors just picked up their cap and gown is a beautiful and scary sight! Cherish these days!
Seniors:
After today, you have 20 class days and 36 calendar days before graduation. It can seem like a lifetime or can be a flash in front of you. The choice is yours. Seniors, it seems like the finish line has already come and gone...but there is still essential time left. Time for yourself, time for each other, time for learning, and memories to be made. You only graduate high school once, Embrace it, live each moment, be active in your choices. The choices that you make today can determine the person that you become. Be true to who you are and keep your eyes on the goal--you are too close to let go of your dreams.
Juniors
Your 25 school days are going to be relentless. Focus on managing your time on what you can control. Your job is your academics. Your job is transitioning into the leaders of our school. Your job remains clear; YOU matter, YOUR grades matter; YOUR decisions matter. Learn from those that have gone before you and seize little opportunities that arise. We believe in you.
Sophomores
Your 25 school days linger with a reminder that you are about to transition into a challenging year. Many of you are learning the difference between dependence versus independence. The time is now to walk the talk. You are just coming out of your shell, and wondering what is up, down, and around you. You have seen so many challenging moments with relationships, coursework, and leadership but you are wondering if anyone notices you. We do, but we are not going to hold your hand through this--it is time to choose. We will always be there for you.
Freshman
Your 25 school days are determined by the habits that you have made. So many people have walked beside you, guided you, and assisted you. You recognize that you are a part of a bigger family but sometimes feel like the little sibling. You have an essential role. You are the key to the transition of our 8th graders. What you say---they believe. What you do---younger students follow. In reality, your task is enormous in living our core values not only for yourself but for your classmates. Believe in YOU!
8th Graders
Your 25 school days are so imperative to your maturation and growth. SO many of you are ending this year with high school credit along with a graduation seal through the Circuit of Success--and that is very exciting! At times, it has felt like you were the only ones in the building this year. Our staff have spent so much time and energy in guiding you and investing in you because you are essential part of our story. Your story is just beginning and the time is NOW to be the leader that we prepared you for. Seize these days to look in the mirror and reflect on your growth along the way---all the while finishing your work and making those marks!
Staff
You are the conductor of the music that we hear each day. Sure, the sound may resonate well from a distance, but only you see what needs to be refined. Continue to coordinate the sound with the beauty that sets the tempo of our pulse as a whole. After most performances, the conductor bows while the orchestra receives the accolades. WE see your influence. WE appreciate your countless preparation. WE see your impact- especially after a long tour. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!

The Schedule For Next Week (Regular)
End of Course Assessments
Chardon High School began to administer the end-of-course assessments this week to measure the academic progress of students. Earlier in the week, the administration went into each ELA 8 and ELA II course to add another layer of motivation for our students. The teacher and students have prepared for these tests throughout the standards, lesson, assessments, and state benchmarks this year.
These state achievement tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. These tests help guide and strengthen future teaching so we can be sure that we are preparing our students for long-term success in school, college, careers and life. Transportation will run at regular times throughout testing. All Auburn Students will take their tests during the time we have scheduled at Chardon High School. All grade levels not testing will have a late start; Seniors must complete their capstone projects. Please watch the video below for additional details.

Dear Senior Parents/Guardians,
My name is Marijana Benjamin, and I am the mom of a CHS senior. I am also the chair of After Prom. Time is going so fast in our kids’ senior year! I am inviting you to be a part of this year and get involved in their After Prom event. Join me and some other wonderful parents to plan a fun and special After Prom event just for our seniors and their guests. We will be decorating the school, planning casino and other games, and organizing refreshments.
We need a lot of help! Here is a sign up genius where you can choose how you are willing and able to sign up. This is only for the planning, and a sign up genius for the actual event will be coming out in April.
We will begin our planning and decorating workshops on March 13th. We will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the school cafeteria up to the event. I welcome any time you are able to give to help!
It has been my privilege to be chair of After Prom for the past 6 years! This year is extra special. I sincerely hope that you join me in making our kids' final high school days memorable!

Closing Message: A reflection from a senior parent's perspective during the next 4 weeks
It is hard to fathom how fast our time has come and gone this year. Where did our time go? Did I do enough, say enough, or even prepare you enough for this moment? I look at you and see me. I look at my own struggles, joys, and moments of excitement (when I was your age) and wonder how quickly our time has come and gone.
Do you I am your biggest fan? Do you know that I will always be there during good times and bad? Do you know how much my love is unconditional for you?
I am so proud of you, and I know that these last days of high school are going to be tough for you. I know that you are spent, exhausted, and ready to move on...but, never forget how you got to this moment. Never forget the failures and success that refined you. Never forget the support that each of us provided for you and always will.
So, in these last school days live every moment in the present. Love every celebration, and know that journey only begins when you cross the finish line. You are almost there! Hang on, push forward, dig deeper, and know that my embrace is a door away. We believe in you--BELIEVE IN YOUR ABILITY-- your journey is a moment away!
Have a beautiful weekend with family and friends!

The Week in Reflection: 4/14
The fourth quarter of school always seems to pass by in the blink of an eye. After a long and often challenging academic year, students and teachers alike look forward to the final stretch before summer break. Even with the change in weather we have to be laser focused on the finish line. The next several weeks are the "master's tournament" of education. It is the time that we refine our approach, focus on every moment, and seize opportunities to demonstrate mastery.
I always say that as soon as the fourth quarter begins, time seems to accelerate, and before we know it, graduation day will arrive. Life in the Fastlane is both exhilarating and stressful, as students try to balance the demands of finishing the school year strong and balancing the demands of work, athletics, and making memories.
As educators, we do this every year. As students, the time to experience these days are short. Take a moment to look around and embrace these days. Celebrate little victories, and make lasting memories!

It was a picture perfect week outside and it allowed us to not only accomplish many victories on the court, track, turf, and field---we accomplished a ton during this short week including meeting with our seniors for a class meeting, classroom observations, staff meetings, planning for the master schedule, and covering many evening events. It was certainly a beautiful week to be a Hilltopper. Since this was a short week, there are many reoccurring themes this week with several key details that are new to plan for. The next couple editions will be filled with details. Make sure to refer to them often as we close out the year.

End of Course Assessments
Chardon High School will administer end-of-course assessments beginning next few weeks to measure the academic progress of students. State achievement tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards.

Congratulations to the Class of 2023. In a few short months your son/daughter will be an Alumni of Chardon High School. Staff members are diligently preparing for the 150th Commencement Exercise on May 27, 2023.

Senior Capstone Project
As we are in full swing of Senior Capstone season, I will be sharing opportunities for our Chardon Community to participate in ways to give back to our community. The enclosed senior capstone project has been in the works for the last few months. Sarah Sutton is a senior who participates in many school activities. One of her passions is softball. At the end of the month, Sarah has a project that includes collecting used softball equipment that will benefit kids in need of equipment in our community and beyond. Consider joining her cause and take a swing at this awesome cause.
Closing Message: Finishing what we started
The graphic above reminds us that it is not enough to begin a task, project, course, game or event in our lives with enthusiasm and energy, but to maintain that momentum until the very end. As students/ staff / or parents-- it is essential to seize every opportunity that comes our way and give our best effort to achieve our goals...even we are feeling overwhelmed. We have all prepared for these moments and our practice has prepared us. This discomfort refines us and makes us the person we choose to become.
At times, we may feel overwhelmed or discouraged by the obstacles we face along the way on any given day. However, it is crucial to remember that perseverance and determination are key to finishing strong. It is during the final stretch that our efforts matter the most and can make a significant difference in our outcomes.
We must remain focused, stay motivated, and keep pushing forward towards our goals even through this discomfort. Whether it is completing a project, preparing for exams, or finishing the race, we must give our best effort (knowing that we have prepared for these moments) until the very end. It is not enough to start fast and then lose momentum. It is just as important (and everyone remembers) how we finish. Choose your response to this adversity and finish strong in order to achieve the success we worked so hard for.
As we push through this quarter, let us remember the importance of seizing every opportunity and giving our best effort until the very end. We have the potential to achieve great things, and with perseverance and determination, we can finish strong and accomplish our goals. Stay motivated, stay focused, and finish this academic/ athletic year with a sense of purpose and achievement--Together.

The Week in Reflection: 4/7
Welcome Back!
We are literally going to fly through these last weeks so hold on. As I have shared over the last several weeks of communications, the upcoming long term schedule demonstrates the volume of tasks and events going on at CHS. As we march through the transition to this new season, we are longing for a stretch of dry and sunny days.
With or without the unknown weather, this year has taught us the importance of patience and perseverance. Being patient creates opportunities for growth inside of us which will help us nurture our response to difficult moments. The next two months are going to pass us by in a blink of an eye. It is so important to pause and reflect on each opportunity in front of us. Likewise, demonstrating patience will expand our ability to persevere through moments in our lives that impact us at school, sports, our jobs, and even relationships.

Spring Break Trips
The Baseball and Softball teams were overjoyed to begin their season in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina over the break. Both teams represented Chardon very well on and off the field! The fields were absolutely beautiful and the competition was strong. The relationships and memories built on the field, spending time with teammates, and bonding was extraordinary. The teams would like to thank all of the coaches who sacrificed their time, the families, countless hands, and our board of education for allowing this trip to occur. The teams are looking forward to seeing you in person this season!

On Thursday, March 23rd through Sunday, March 26th, the Chardon High School Choir Department traveled to New York City. It was a wonderful time with lots of music making, sights, memories, and friendships. We had a busy few days in the city.
Students saw Broadway shows Wicked, Hadestown, and Six. We toured Radio City Music Hall. We participated in two workshops. One with a renowned choral conductor from NYC and one learning song and dance with original cast members from the show Six. We heard the St. Thomas Boys Choir in the St. Thomas Cathedral. The group went on a boat ride of the harbor and visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
We had a Q&A time with 5 CHS Alumni that live in NYC. We were joined by Rebecca Moser, Jill Allenby, Ian Taylor, Natalie Clark, and Stephen Blaugh. They shared with the students about living and working in NYC. They range in careers from design engineering, finance, advertising, musical theater, and IT.
Thank you to everyone that participated in this special adventure. It was a pleasure traveling with you!

PBIS Behavior Expectations

In an effort to promote the types of behaviors we would like to see in our school, during Topper Times, Freshman Mentoring, and Circuit periods over the past three weeks, students were engaged in lessons regarding the CHS Behavior Expectations. The expectations were created through the collaboration of the CHS PBIS team, staff, and students this school year. Below are the expectations as they align with our CHS Core Values, design courtesy of CHS students Cassie Bright, Jordan Cvelbar, Estefany Vazquez, Sadie Kuhnle, William Brooker, and Teagan Koehler: Special thanks to Ms. Mary Pat Pavicic and the entire PBIS team for their exceptional work this year.

End of Course Assessments
Chardon High School will administer end-of-course assessments beginning next few weeks to measure the academic progress of students. State achievement tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards.

The Week in Reflection: 3/24
Spring Break is Here
The beauty of Spring is on the horizon. The birds are beginning to chirp, blossoms are seeking the warmth of the sun, and the weather is dawning into a new season. Welcome to the beauty of this short season in Northeast Ohio. Embrace this time, brace for the Spring showers for the April and May flowers will bloom shortly.
Living in this region, we become accustomed to the highs and lows of the weather, but there is one weather pattern we can control...our personal weather.
Every day, we walk our routines with our words, deeds, and behaviors. We, in turn, carry our own weather. Although retired, Mr. Armelli always is a perfect example of this mantra. He stood outside in the rain, snow, and sun exclaiming to ALL: It's a beautiful day!
Now, more than ever--carrying our own feelings about our autonomy, our place in this world, and connectivity to others need to rise to the surface of those things that we can control.
We are finally in Spring! We are finally at Spring Break. Personally, I am physically and mentally exhausted and looking forward to a refresh. Take time to re-energize and focus on the long and winding road that we will face as we close out the season and press on to a rest of quarter.

National Honors Society Induction Ceremony
The Four Pillars of National Honor Society
Scholarship is characterized by a commitment to learning. A student is willing to spend the necessary time to cultivate his/ her mind in the quest for knowledge. This pillar can only be achieved through diligence and effort. Scholarship means always doing the best work possible, regardless of impending reward.
Service: The pillar of service can be reached in a variety of ways. The willingness to work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition of any kind is a quality that is essential in NHS members. As a service club, the National Honor Society is highly concerned with giving its all to the school and community at large.
Leadership: Leaders take the initiative to aid others in a wholesome manner throughout their daily activities. Leaders sacrifice their personal interests in order to yield to the needs of others. Leaders need wisdom and self-confidence to affect change in all aspects of their lives. Some examples of leadership can include, but are not limited to, leading group activities in the classroom and in the community, being an officer in a club, being a primary member of the band or choir, or being the captain of a sports team.
Character: Character is what distinguishes one individual from another. It is the product of constant striving to make the right choices day after day. Students with good character demonstrate respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, caring, and citizenship in all of their actions.

ACADEC Clinches 28 STATE Medals

(Kelly Misch- Contributor)
March 17, 2023 -- Chardon High School’s Academic Decathlon team impressed at the State tournament held at John Carroll University March 10-11, in all hauling 28 well-earned medals back to Hilltopper town. The 20-member team likewise shined in virtual regional contests earlier this year, garnering 26 regional medals, including 10 gold.
Chardon ACADEC operates under the dedicated leadership of Coach Allen Herner — advisor to the team since the 2010-11 school year, leading the team each and every year to State-level competition beginning with his first season aboard. In Hilltopper tag-teaming spirit, CHS science teacher Dr. Rebecca Schneider was at the helm for the team’s 2023 State tournament journey.
Coach Herner stated, “Dr. Schneider took on a substantial workload in getting our students to the State competition and advocating for them while there. I can’t imagine the event being such a success for our students without her.”
The Chardon Board of Education will recognize the Chardon Academic Decathlon team for its 2023 accomplishments during the student recognition segment of the March 20 regular board meeting scheduled for 6:30p.m. at 428 North Street (44024). The segment is towards the start of the meeting.
Congratulations ACADEC!

The Week in Reflection: 3/17
Happy Friday! Happy St. Patrick's Day! As we enter the 4th quarter of the school year, let us remember the words of the great Irish poet, W.B. Yeats: "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." The options are easy for students, choose to light your own fire with your academic routines, or allow parents, teachers, counselors, and admin light it on our terms. At this point in high school, students choosing the right response plays a significant role in the their growth and maturity. We have seen a ton of growth from our students this year, and closing out the last quarter is mission critical. There are not only the in-class standards, but great opportunities to make significant strides in the Ohio State Tests, while making great memories as a class! You don't need the luck of the Irish, just some good old hard work and focus. We know that we all can finish strong!

The Addams Family
I had the opportunity to see the Addams Family on opening night. I was so impressed along with countless in the crowd seeing our students shine on the stage. We have such a talented group of students who have been challenged and enriched by generations of Hilltopper musical directors. All parts of our cast, and crew worked as a team to put on a show for the Chardon community. I am so proud of their work and attention to detail. Check out the details below for more information regarding the show.

"They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, they're all together ooky... the Addams Family!" Adapted from Charles Addams' cartoons, The Addams Family features the Addams, a rather eccentric family with a taste for all things gothic, as they receive some very shocking news; their daughter is in love... with someone NORMAL! The play kicks off with the Addams inviting the Beinekes over for dinner after Wednesday Addams, a gothic and odd young teen, and Lucas Beineke, a young teen crazy about Wednesday, fall in love. The families are certainly in for an interesting night, complete with a seemingly fun little game after dinner. What could go wrong? Will the Addams be angry when they find out a member of the Beinekes, the normal and bland family from Ohio, has proposed to a member of their family? What hidden secrets will be revealed? Come join the Chardon High School Drama Program for a night of fun, music, and laughter to find out!

Free Harmony performs at Mentor Show Choir Festival:
On Saturday, March 11th, 2023, Free Harmony, Chardon High School's show choir performed at the Mentor Show Choir Festival. The event presented ensembles from Mayfield, Madison, Mentor, and Chardon. It was great to be back at the Mentor festival for the first time since the outset of COVID. Free Harmony presented pieces from their Broadway spring set, inspired by our trip to NYC. We opened with the theme from the show "Hair", sang "Magic to Do" from Pippin, "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" from Mary Poppins, and closed with uplifting songs Raise You Up and Just Be from the Cindy Lauper musical Kinky Boots. Free Harmony presented an energetic and inspiring performance!
Matt Gittins - Class of 2015 - Choir Guest Speaker

On Tuesday, March 14th, Chorale and Treble Choir welcomed 2015 CHS alumni Matt Gittins to speak about perspectives of working as an actor and life in NYC. After graduation, Matt attended Otterbein University where he study Musical Theater. While at Otterbein, Matt composed an original musical titled "You Go On", reflecting on the friendships and trauma after the Chardon HS shooting. After completing his degree at Otterbein, Matt moved to NYC until COVID. Matt is a member of the Actors Equity Union and works actively as an actor, musician, composer, conductor, and teacher. Matt is currently serving on our CHS Drama staff as the pit director for our spring musical "The Addams Family".
The CHS Choirs will be traveling to NYC March 23rd-26th. Matt's visit and discussion laid the groundwork for our time together in NYC and can serve as a source of inspiration for career options or to broaden one's understanding of life in the performing arts. The students asked great questions which stimulated a relevant discussion about NYC and the career of an actor. A huge thank you to Matt for his willingness to share with our CHS students!

The Week in Reflection: 3/10
Welcome to the 4th Quarter
I am often inspired by moments. A simple smile. A picturesque view. A simple song. A good laugh with family...and seeing a community coming together to celebrate.
All of the above are moments that made me pause this week.
This time of year can create such a mad rush of closing bells towards the end of the quarter, intermittent weather patterns, busy family schedules, and the Ides of March in our own lives. It is so important to pause and reflect so that life doesn't pass us by without each of us recognizing a genuine smile, the beauty of a blue sky or slow motion snow, laughing about silly things with your loved ones, or hearing a song that causes you to slow down.
As the fourth quarter begins, it's important to remember why you started, and how you want to finish, The closing of one quarter and beginning of the final push is an opportunity to finish strong and set yourself up for success in the future. Students, this is your chance to demonstrate all that you have learned and accomplished throughout the year, and to showcase your growth and development as a student. We have accomplished much this year, and pushing forward through the finish line is always the goal. Stay focused, stay motivated, and stay positive, and remember that every effort you put in now will pay long term! You have come this far, and you have the ability to achieve greatness - let this fourth quarter be the beginning of many memorable milestones!
All of the above are moments that made me pause this week.

4 E Exploration Day
Tuesday marked on of the busiest days of the calendar year. A ton of people made our 4E Exploration Day happen. I am very appreciate for our counselors for their work in organizing the Senior Capstone Day, The ACT, ASVAB, Auburn Career Center trip, and Lake Erie College trip. We had over 1,100 students moving and every staff member assisted along the way. I am also appreciate for our transportation staff, and all of our parents for their flexibility as we scheduled for the day to align to our mission and district success plan. We are looking forward seeing the fruits of this labor pay off! In a similar note, celebrating time with families the night before was very special with our Family Fun Night! We look forward to making this annual event twice a year during Halloween and the day before the 4E Exploration Day.
The Schedule for Next Week
2023 Senior Handbook
Dear Parents/Guardians of the Class of 2023,
Congratulations to the Class of 2023. In a few short months your son/daughter will be an Alumni of Chardon High School. Staff members are diligently preparing for the 150th Commencement Exercise on May 27, 2023.
In an effort to communicate the responsibilities of this solemn event, we have enclosed the necessary information for every graduating senior and their families in this booklet.
The graduation booklet contains all instructions, deadlines and expectations that our students must follow in order to meet the requirements of graduation. It is essential that the senior class maintain the level of maturity and responsibility they have shown this past school year.
Please review this information with your child and help us emphasize the importance of setting a positive legacy for the Class of 2023. Please know how much we appreciate your flexibility, and patience as we plan and create meaningful experiences for your children.

Will Vucetic's is heading to State!

Will Vucetic will be wrestling in the OHSAA State Wrestling Tournament for the second year in a row. His qualification came through a grueling two-day North Canton Hoover Division I District Tournament where Will placed second at 165 pounds. He opened day one of the tournament with a 49 second pin and followed that with a 6-2 decision over a returning state placer in the quarterfinals. Saturday morning's semifinal match saw Will give up the first two points, however he then went on a 9-0 run the rest of the way, securing a spot in the district finals. The semifinal win automatically qualified him for the state tournament. His finals match pitted Will against another returning state placer. He dropped the match 5-1, but will take his 38-9 record to the Schottenstein Center at Ohio State this weekend as he marches toward an All-State medal. Congratulations Will!!! Go Toppers!!!

Charlotte Jons Makes Chardon History as OSDA POI STATE Champ!

Article by Kelly Misch:
Chardon High School junior and Ohio Speech and Debate Association three-time high school State qualifier and 2023 national qualifier Charlotte Jons completed seven rounds of competition in this weekend's OSDA state tournament, culminating in a thrilling finish as the STATE CHAMPION in the Program Oral Interpretation event.
Among 1,000 Ohio high school students competing at the state level this weekend, Charlotte was one of 53 competing specifically in POI. The tournament was held March 3-4 at Austintown Fitch High School in Austintown.
Charlotte combines prose and poetry around a central theme for the POI event each year. This year, her POI speech was centered on what Charlotte describes as "the need for dark humor in our current society".
She stated, "The speech explores the Sad Clown Paradox as well as the phenomenon of comedians using laughter to overcome personal struggles."
A CHS pioneer in OSDA competition, Charlotte has paved the way for Chardon as a sole member of the school's speech and debate team. She has been competing since her days at Chardon Middle School with annual high achievement, including placing sixth in the 2022 State tournament and earning a Special Distinction mark this school year — an award that only 18% of speech and debate competitors nationwide earn in their high school years.
Serving as Chardon's longtime OSDA coach is Amy Roediger — Charlotte's mom — who is a seasoned speech and debate coach and an award-winning Mentor High School chemistry teacher.
The Chardon Board of Education looks forward to recognizing Charlotte for her State championship win and stellar 2022-23 season at an upcoming board meeting.

CHS Choirs performed at the (OMEA)
On Friday evening, March 3rd, the CHS Choirs performed at the (OMEA) Ohio Music Education Association Large Group Event at Mentor High School. Chorale (class B mixed) and Treble Choir (class C treble) participated in the event. The 8th-grade boys joined Chorale and the 8th-grade girls joined the Treble Choir for the performances. The choirs were directed by both Mr. Streiff and our student teacher from CWRU Mr. O'keefe.
The choirs did a wonderful job in their preparation and performance! The ratings range from 1 being the strongest performance to 5 being the lowest. Chorale received the top rating of a 1, receiving straight 1's from all three of the judges for their performance. Chorale received a 2 on sight reading but brought home a composite score of a 1 for the day. Chorale performed some diverse and powerful tunes; Ubi Caritas (Gjeilo), TaReKita (Esmail), and Soon-ah Will Be Done (Dawson). Treble Choir received a 2 from the performance judges and had a strong showing with a 1 rating on the sight reading portion. The treble choir performed several beautiful pieces and an interesting complex and fun tune from Malaysia; Hold Fast to Dreams (LaBarr), Ikan Kekek (Hang Tan), Shadow River (Hagenberg). Congratulations to our CHS choir students on their outstanding commitment to excellence through performance.
This is an adjudicated event providing an opportunity for feedback and to grow our musicianship through performance. The event consists of performing three pieces for three judges. One of these pieces is from a required list of literature to choose from, the other pieces provide a varied presentation. Once the ensembles have performed they head to the Sight Reading Room. During this time, the students are given a new piece of literature to learn with 5 minutes of preparation. They sing using the solfege system to develop their understanding of pitch within the new piece and within minutes are expected to sing the piece without accompaniment.

Topp-notch A cappella

On Monday, March 6th the CHS pop a cappella group Topp-notch A cappella visited and performed at Chardon Middle School. The ensemble of 9 singers, performed for all 8 lunch periods throughout the day. The middle school students really enjoyed the tunes that were shared! There was lots of clapping along and smiles.
The ensemble performed Set Fire to the Rain (Adele), She's Got A Way (Billy Joel), and Viva La Vida (Coldplay). The students finished the day, by visiting the 6th and 7th-grade choirs. Topp-notch A cappella served as wonderful ambassadors for CHS and the Chardon choral program.

4E Focus: Hilltopper Alumni in the News

This past week, Kent State University of Theatre Department put on a production of the Broadway musical Urinetown. CHS Alumni Olivia Nelson was cast in the lead female role as a freshman, one of only two freshmen in the production. Olivia did an amazing job carrying the role of Hope Cladwell. As always Olivia shared her powerful vocals with the audience that often give you chills. Hope Cladwell finds the positive in the world around her and challenges the other characters in the show to dream and live into a world where everyone can live to their full potential. Olivia is a proud part of the KSU musical theater program. Great job Olivia!
CHS Alumni Kirstin Henry has also been making a splash as an actress since graduating from Kent State University's Musical Theater Program. Kirstin completed a run of the musical Guys and Dolls this fall in Florida, playing the lead role of Sarah Brown. Kirstin is currently on the road with Paw Patrol Live and will be performing at Playhouse Square this week. Keep up the great work Kirstin!
CHS Alumni Ethan Peterson is pursuing a musical theater degree at Penn State University. Ethan is playing the lead role of The Baker. Very proud of Ethan for his accomplishments!
