2/9/2024 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 2/9Opening: Gratitude this WeekThe beauty of kindness creates energy and excitement is creative ways. As we continue #27BeTheChange, our students are spreading words of encouragement throughout the building, performing acts of kindness and making this month very meaningful. It was very busy week of organizing tons of information, and attending many winter events. It is hard to believe that we are weeks away from the beginning of the spring season. With the quarter ending in just under a month, it is mission critical to stay the course through the finish line! This edition of the Week in Reflection is filled with tons of information. Take the time to check everything out. If any parent or community member is interested in participating in #27BeTheChange to support our students or staff, please contact douglas.murrray@chardonschools.org. We would love parent and community engagement any time throughout the year--especially in February. Gratitude. It is said that gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues but the parent of all others. During this month, use your influence to impact others. Demonstrate, Love, Provide, Model, and GIVE Gratitude. One word, deed, or action can change a moment. Each day in February I plan on sending students and staff a gratitude message of what I am thank for. I will share with you each week, the focus addressed. February 5, 2024: Day 5- Friends and Community: Today I am grateful for friends and our community. Friends are an extension of our family providing us with humor, support, and love through good and bad times. Likewise, our community is the support system that lifts us up, encourages us, and is our core and our home. Together, they make us and shape us. February 6, 2024: Day 6- Educators: Today, I am grateful for all educators. Your job is endless, and your commitment to service is relentless. Teaching is an instinctual art, filled with the wonder and awe of endless possibilities. Educators are conduits to our family and leave a legacy of hope. February 7, 2024: Day 7-Health Care Workers: Today, I am grateful for healthcare workers across the world. Your love, compassion, service, knowledge, and gentle care have guided people for generations. You are heroes and miracle workers. February 8, 2024: Day 8 - First Responders: Today, I am grateful for all of the men and women who work around the clock protecting and serving the public. I value our relationship in Chardon. Your commitment to excellence, selfless service, and commitment to education nurture generations of families in our community. February 9, 2024: Day 9-Military Services: Today, I am grateful for our military services that serve with duty, honor, and service of others while protecting and leading. You are the first to get up and the last to rest. We appreciate you. February 10, 2024: Day 10-All Workers: Today, I am grateful for all workers, and the rights of workers. The dignity of work and the values learned from work build the foundation of our commitment to serve, build, create, and develop skills. Some people dream of success, while others wake up and work hard at it. February 11, 2024: Day 11-Water: Today, I am grateful for clean water. Our county is rich in an abundance of water. The simplest combination of elements nourishes us and energizes us. My heart reaches out to those who do not have access to clean water; together, we can do our part to conserve and be innovative in our efforts to reach those in the greatest need. The selection of a high school program is a very important task and one in which you, your parents, and your school counselors should give careful thought.
It is essential that you decide which courses best fit your needs and register for them. Each year students are disappointed because a class they requested closes or cancels. Although all classes in the Program of Study may be initially offered, final decisions on class offerings will be determined by enrollment after board action. Please note that some classes are offered on a rotating basis; see specific course descriptions for information. For 2024-2025, Chardon Local Schools will again be partnering with Lakeland Community College for College Credit Plus (CCP) courses available on our campus. CCP offers qualified students the opportunity to enroll in college courses and earn college credit; which can also be used to fulfill high school graduation requirements. For more information regarding CCP, please meet with a school counselor. Students are encouraged to plan carefully a program of study that will assist them in reaching their educational goals. The college preparatory program, accelerated, advanced placement programs and the career/technical educational programs outlined on the following pages are designed to guide students in selecting the subjects that will lead them toward achieving their goals. Enclosed below, you will be able to view the video presentation from Curriculum Night, along with a Google Slide Presentation and our Program of Studies. Please be mindful that all final communications pertaining to the program of study is contingent upon board approval Program of Study The 24-25 Program of Study has been sent to the board for review and board consideration. February 4, 2024 — Chardon High School senior CHARLOTTE JONS has once again brought pride to her school community, this time earning FIRST PLACE in the Ohio Speech and Debate Association's Program Oral Interpretation event at the 2024 Cleveland DISTRICT Tournament, advancing her to the OSDA 2024 STATE Tournament at Wooster High School March 1-2.
Charlotte, who competed in the District tournament at Olmsted Falls High School on Feb. 3, has repeatedly made Chardon history as an OSDA competitor. She is not only the District's first-ever OSDA State qualifier but has competed her way to the State tier of competition for several seasons. CHS OSDA Coach Roediger stated, "By qualifying, she has earned the distinction of being a four-year State qualifier, and she will be part of a select group of seniors who will be recognized for this distinction at awards at the tournament in March. She is only the second student I have coached who has achieved this honor." Coach Roediger, a Mentor High School chemistry teacher and MHS speech and debate coach, is a seasoned OSDA coach spanning over two decades of commitment to speech and debate students both in the Mentor Schools and Chardon Local Schools. Principal Doug Murray shared that he is so proud of Charlotte and is grateful for all Coach Roediger has done to support and prepare her for success. He added, "I cannot wait to get her on another Principal's Podcast." In 2023, Charlotte earned the OSDA State Champion title in POI and also competed in POI at the national-level through the National Speech and Debate Association. Best wishes to Charlotte at the 2024 State Tournament! Kelly Misch Communications Director Chardon Local Schools kelly.misch@chardonschools.org 440.286.0409 CHS Academic Decathlon
On Saturday, February 3rd the CHS Academic Decathlon team stormed Riverside High School to take on the live events of Regional Competition. Having taken 7 objective tests and written an essay online in January, they were still facing the Speech, Interview and Superquiz events. More than half the team are swimmers who had to perform their speeches and participate in Interview in the morning before making waves for Beechwood and a noon swim meet. This meant missing the afternoon awards ceremony at Riverside, and it's too bad they did. By the time the dust had settled, Chardon had garnered 36 individual medals on their way to being crowned Champions of the Large School Division! Congratulations CHS ACADEC on your 2024 Regional Championship! Special shoutout to Mr. Al Herner for not only this contribution to the Week in Reflection, but for his commitment to preparing our students for these competitions!

Have a beautiful weekend with family and friends,
Douglas Murray, Principal Closing: Love
February provides us the opportunity to focus on our values, community, and future. In closing this week's edition of the Week in Reflection, I wanted to take a moment to include a perspective of a parent to their child about the unconditional love and dreams that they have for each of their children. This letter something that I stumbled upon years ago. In a time that often leads us feeling stuck in the middle of winter ---longing for spring---it is a little reminder of what really matters. February is a month of gratitude, compassion, love, purpose, and examples of who we are in Chardon.
Dear Son/Daughter, I wish for you to be kind. Each day, as I send you to school, I hug you, I kiss you, and then I say, "Be kind." In a world that, in some ways, is so cold and harsh, kindness matters. I would rather have you be known as the kindest than as the smartest. You never know what is going on in someone else's mind or heart, but being kind will never be the wrong choice. Being kind does not mean that you are not strong or determined, but that you treat others the way you would want to be treated. My wish for you is that you will be discerning. That you can view a situation or problem and handle it gracefully and mindfully. That you will weigh options and choices and listen to that small voice that helps you decide right from wrong. I wish for you bravery. Courage to do what is right. Lines between right and wrong are blurred these days, be brave. Be who you are. Stand up for your beliefs. Take chances. Reach and stretch to become the person you want to be. My wish for you is that you will learn from heartache. The mother/father in me wants to protect you from pain and hurt, but the logical part of my brain knows that's not always possible. I recognize that some of my greatest accomplishments and treasured blessings, including you, came from much pain and heartache. Great joy comes from knowing sadness and I want those joyful learning experiences for you. They will make you a better person. My wish is that you are grateful. You have many blessings already in life and many more are headed your way. Acknowledge them. Be grateful for them. Don't take them for granted. Recognize that challenges can be blessings as well. I wish for you truth. You might have to dig and scratch and fight for it, but find truth. Tell the truth. Be an honest person that people can count on. Being trustworthy is one of the most noble character traits you can develop. I wish for you a life full of laughter. As much of it as possible. I know you cherish how our family loves to laugh, and our home is full of laughter on a regular basis. Look for friends and loved ones that make you laugh. Laughter is indeed the best medicine in life. My wish for you is that you become unselfish. To serve and think of others is the most rewarding part of life. Serve the people around you, think of their feelings and emotions. By looking outside yourself you will find good qualities and traits in others to focus on and develop in your own life. My wish for you is to know you are loved...by me...by your family...by your teachers. As your life grows to include more and more people, surround yourself with people who love you for who you are. You have a beautiful soul, you deserve to be loved. Love is hard work, but work that is worth every effort. I want you to dream big, but to realize that with big dreams comes hard work. Dreams are worth working for. There is so much joy to be found in the little steps that make up big dreams. You have the capability to become whatever you want to be in life. Know that you are my biggest dream. I wished upon a star for years before my dreams came true. But that dream has been even better than I could have ever imagined. All of these things I wish for you, you have helped me find in myself. You have helped me be braver than I ever thought I would have to be. You make me laugh more than anyone else. You shower me with love, you make me think and rethink all my decisions, you help me dream big, and for you I am grateful. We love you, Your loving family

2/2/2024 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 2/2Be The Change
Kindness has the power to transform lives, to heal emotions, and to spread joy and hope. It is a simple act of generosity that requires no special skills, no wealth, and no position of authority. Yet, its impact is profound and far-reaching. Kindness has the ability to light up a room, to bring a smile to someone's face, and to make the world a better place, one act at a time. February is perfect month to focus our intentions on the simplest of gestures. I encourage you to find ways to be create as a family, at your work, in classes, and most importantly--in your response to how one act can change the outcome to any day. Members of our Executive Student Council and Hilltopper Minds worked in December and January to present 2024's Focus in February:24BeThe Change.
February 1, 2024: Day 1- Faith: If you walk into my office you will see a chalkboard above my desk that marks my mission statement. Several words stand out. The first is Faith. Today, I am grateful for faith. The ability to have it, feel it, and live it. February 2, 2024: Day 2- Families: Today, I am grateful for the gift of families. The core of our lives looks different for all of us, but the roots grow strong and we always remember who we are and what we stand for. February 3, 2024: Day 3-Grandparents/Parents/Guardians: Our first teachers, guides, nurses, and first love--grandparents, parents, and guardians. They come in all unique styles and energy. Today, I am grateful for the unconditional love, kindness, and creativity of all of those who first protected us. February 4, 2024: Day 4- Children: It has been stated that Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see. Children are beautiful, gems in our eyes, gifts, and quite complicated passionate little loves. They are an endless book of wonder. Today, I give thanks for the joy and hope of our children. 7:00 PM on Thursday, I published this blog. While it was spinning to publish, the page crashed. I thought that it was no big deal since the draft always saves and that I could just republish....nope, the whole site deleted. I was on the phone with the provider for about 30 minutes..to hear the words--THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO, SIR. All we can do is restore the last published version of your website. At that point after a long day-- I had two choices. Tell everyone, sorry...I have no idea how I can recreate this---or do my best to make sure that this routine was back in place. I chose the latter. So, please be kind to me this week. This version of the Week in Reflection will the best that I can offer. I am a big advocate of forging through difficulties even when I have no energy to get there. I believe in empowering students, and adults all of the time. I am also an advocate for being thorough, compassionate, and consistent. We all share important roles in guiding ourselves, and others within choices. As parents, the world that we are raising our children in has changed significantly since we grew up as teenagers. The countless hustle, schedules, along with personal devices has shifted much of the time that we are able to spend with our children. The noise in the world forced us to learn evolving technology, means of communication, and new trends. One thing that doesn't change in this world, is our response to the noise. Raising a child today is challenging. Our job as parents is the key to the relationships that we form with our children. They need us more than ever--even when they put out barriers, and tell us that we don't understand. At some point, our children will mature to see that we too were in their shoes. Through good and bad times, we love our children unconditionally--even through the noise. From the students perspective, their world was born with with movement, technology, snapchat, TikTok, and Instagram. Students can hang out with a group of friends in the same room and snap each other without even opening their mouth. Student live by spontaneous schedules driving most parents nuts. Whereas we as adults were raised in a personable, face to face interactions to talk with friends--- we (parents and educators) have to teach these skills to our children and students in order to help them communicate, stand confident, share and collaborate. As much as they leave clothes on the floor, listen half-heartedly--our children do love us--even when we don't see it. As educators, we often find ourselves filling shoes not only being an educator but also as a role model and guide to our students. Educators are constantly running throughout the day to teach, provide intervention, and run extra-curricular activities while often being a parent taking for their families. All educators become an extension of the household as role models and mentors. All of this circles us to a larger community that we are all connected to. We are better connected when we communicate with intention, and do everything we can in our capacity to serve each other. As much as I need you to be the best version of yourself, you need me to lead to be the best of my abilities each day. Our shared responsibility guides each of us and our children to make the best decisions, coral them when they don't, and work together to raise our children in our world filled with noise. Together, we can all help turn down the volume of the noise around us and be present to current needs of each other. I appreciate you. 27BeTheChange2024
Members of our Executive Student Council and Hilltopper Minds worked in December and January to present 2024's Focus in February: 24BeThe Change.
Purpose Chardon is our home. It is our community. We love our families and those who have surrounded us with love for generations. Like most homes, we too have faced difficulties and times when we felt lost. There are so many moments that transformed us through these challenging times. Our community, the resilience and love of students, staff, and alumni have built the bridges of compassion, outreach, and our core values. Each day allows us to grow stronger, love more, and give ourselves. We have great days, good days, and tough days. What is most important is that we keep sight of our purpose. From the moments after our darkest day, leaders in our school and community vowed to stimulate change in laws, behaviors, and awareness. At Chardon High School, we stand firm in our conviction to be an instrument of change. The school is challenging all people to spread and share kindness and to be an instrument of change every day, specifically in the month of February. The 27 Days of Be the Change will begin February 1 and well beyond February 27. It is the continued hope of the established core values at CHS that these actions will inspire and change lives. By actively caring for others each day, a habit of kindness can develop and continue well past this month. Weekly Themes February 1-9: SELF-Be the Best Version of Yourself; Be Positive and Kind to YOU
February 12-16: OTHERS- Demonstrate Kindness to not only yourself, but to others- family, friends, staff

Closing: Routines
As a educator, I find the importance of routines to be integral in fostering a positive learning environment and supporting the overall well-being and performance of students and staff. Research consistently highlights the numerous benefits of routines in promoting mental health, wellness, and academic success. As difficult as it was for me to literally rewrite everything that I could remember after this website crashed, I knew that there are those out there that expect this newsletter to be in the inbox by 7:00 AM on Friday. The last couple of weeks have taxed our ability to establish routines.
However, routines at school are mission critical, and establishing routines at home help pave the way for success. Establishing consistent routines has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels among students. Having a typical expectation to what is planned provides a sense of predictability and stability, creating a conducive atmosphere for learning and comfort at school and at home. We know as parents and guardians the positive impact of consistent routines on sleep patterns, nutrition, and overall physical health. I appreciate the enormous assistance of my staff to establish routines after the last couple of weeks. It has felt as we have been at home more than school. I really appreciate EVERY staff member that assisted me in recreating many of the talking points in this Week in Reflection, and I pray that this never happens to you or me ever again. Have a beautiful weekend with your family! Signing off Douglas Murray, Principal 1/19/2024 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 1/19/24CHARDON HIGH SCHOOL IS CLOSED-- JANUARY 19, 2024
The Chardon Local Schools will be closed today, January 19, 2024 due to inclement weather conditions or other circumstances requiring us to declare a calamity. ALL extracurricular and athletic competitions, practices, and meetings are also canceled.
I will reflect on our very short week at the end of this newsletter. Prior to the calamity days, I had an opening message that still fits with the week. Opening Message: You Matter
You matter. In this moment, in this place, regardless of your last name, your status on the team, the letter at the top of the exam. You matter. A history will be written in your steps, eyes and ears will see and hear the beauty of who you are. Trust in tomorrow, believe in the story, and hear me now: You Matter.
Relationships Matter. When you look at your life and the people that you surround yourself with--it is mission critical to live and love in the moment. Life is too short not to say words of encouragement...a simple thank you or love you will make the biggest difference in your day. Think positively. Where your attention goes, so goes your emotional energy. When you think of negative things, your energy and productivity drop. Maintaining a positive attitude is one of the most essential ingredients to your productivity. Focus on what you can control. Don’t waste time worrying or thinking about things you can’t control. The negative energy and time spent is a huge time waster. Instead, focus your time on the things you can control that lead you on the path to achieving your goals. Structure your time according to your goals. Your time should always be spent doing things that help you achieve your goals and bring fulfillment to your life. Plan your days and determine how you will use your time most productively to accomplish your goals. Take time to recharge. A constant state of stress and overwork slows you down. Make sure you schedule time to refresh and recharge your batteries. This includes making the time each week so that you can rest and do what you enjoy with the people who are most important to you. As we navigate through the cold January days, we want to make sure families and students know who is available to answer questions or respond to concerns you may have. Chardon High School Administration, School Counselors, Social Worker, SRO, and School Nurse are available to respond to any concerns you may have. As always, feel free to contact your teacher for your academic needs. For more information regarding ways that we can support you and your family consider the following resource. Madison Primc and Jennifer Kogovsek are senior students involved in many activities at Chardon High School. One leadership role that many people do not see are their roles as board liaisons each month. Their job is to highlight all of the great things that we accomplish each month at Chardon High School. Their work does not get unnoticed by our board members, community members present, communications director, or by me. They are quite accomplished young leaders that our underclassmen should look up to for their attention to detail, high achievement, and school involvement. I am so proud of their work. Jen and Madison never need additional resources, meetings, or reminders- these young ladies are mature well beyond their age. I am so grateful for their commitment to growth, our district, and exceptional leadership! Check out their latest highlights that they presented on January 16th's meeting.

Closing Message
This was a short and very cold week. The polar vortex dropped into Northeast Ohio creating some very windy and frigid conditions over the last 7 days. Whereas parts of Lake Erie snow machine pounded the eastern part of the Lake, we were feeling the drop in temperatures all week. With Monday off for MLK Day, and a return to school on Tuesday, most of our region (including some colleges) called off Wednesday due to the temperatures. Thursday was a RED Day schedule, and now Friday is another calamity due to snow. It is a game of who's on first, and what's on second.
Most of us adults cannot recall a time during our school days where such a calamity day occurred. We were the generation that walked to school (up hill both ways), road the bus until we were almost 17, didn't have 4x4, a phone, and coffee was brewed at home. We read the paper, and had a 50ft curly phone line connected to a landline. Each generation can certainly learn from each other. However, the most essential skill that today's generation should continue to learn and understand is the cross generational skill of communicating with respect- looking someone in the eyes, and responding with empathy. This is an innate skill that starts from infancy and grows through adulthood. In a world where everyone loves to type a response- open communication, respect, empathy, and dialogue leads every generation to look through the same filter. The more that we all seek to understand, the better our approach to our response will be. As I started this Week in Reflection, YOU MATTER. These are not just words typed. It is our fundamental belief instilled by our core values that Our Community helps shape us, our Humility provides us an opportunity to understand empathy. Our focus on Achievement in and out of school raises our bar as individuals and as a school, our ability to show Respect and Dignity gives a lens to treat others how we want to be treated, and our attitude of Optimism and Nurturing mindset gives us hope and the grit necessary to overcome any obstacle that we face. Together, we all can #TopperUP in every moment of our lives! Have a beautiful weekend with your family and friends! Stay warm! Douglas Murray, Principal 1/12/2024 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 1/12/24Opening: Choosing our Response Each Day
This time of year can create a sense of passiveness or lethargy in energy, creativity, and health. Living in Northeast Ohio and walking outside to cloudiness, wind, snow, rain and other unpredictable weather only adds to the feeling of waiting and wishing for a change. Taking care of yourself will best equip you for emotions that can arise this time of year. The quote in this image is great example how we can choose our response to the waves our lives. We can either let them hit us and react, or learn to ride them and learn.
Weathering the storm When a storm is predicted you prepare the best that you can. Your experiences, along with trusting others who have been in similar conditions, best equip you with the knowledge that you need to get through these situations. Likewise, in your life, there are many people that you encounter that have experienced the trials of good and bad times. Listening to the wisdom of family members and trusted adults can provide insight into the best ways to get through difficult times. Knowing that there are others who are experiencing these feelings, or passiveness is an important reality to remember. You are not in this alone. In order to equip yourself fully, it is important to talk to others and share how you are feeling instead of letting the "storm" grow inside of your life. The third quarter of a school year can be compared to the 7th inning stretch in baseball: the time of year where students can become very restless and lethargic. Every student can fall into this restless period- it is important that parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators work collaboratively to guide students through this seasonal experience. Creating new habits The best way to get out of the third quarter blues is to create new habits and routines. This is easier said than done. Students need to choose this response to create the new outcomes that they desire. Light energizes each of us. During the winter, the days seem shorter due to the change in season and the tilt of the earth. Our bodies adjust to this change and we need to create new routines to increase our energy. In the same way, the third quarter can create a "tilt" in our energy to stay on top of our work, exercise, and past routines. Many students may fall into this trap of the third quarter and wonder what happened when the quarter ends in early March. Instead of wondering where the time went---reestablish the routines that you set forth in the first and second quarters and plowshare the noise of the third quarter. Preparing for tomorrow by living today In the book, Above the Line: Lessons in Leadership and Life from a Championship Program, the authors discuss the success formula that can catapult our responses to any "crashing wave" or event in our lives. This formula is simple: E + R = O (Event + Response = Outcome) We don’t control the events in life and we don’t directly control the outcomes. However, we always have control over how we choose to respond.. The key indicator is leadership. This leadership is not only what I can control as a principal. It is what WE can lead as parents, teachers, and coaches to our children--along with how we can support each other in the process. We all need to ask the question--exactly what is it that I am after each day? Having this clarity of purpose will allow us to keep our responses "above the line" of being intentional, purposeful, and skillful whereas living "below the line" of being impulsive, and on autopilot. Under pressure, we do not rise to the occasion. We rise or fall to the level of our training. Therefore, train far beyond the finish line of the third quarter and the outcomes will catapult the goals that you set for yourself. Ride the wave of this quarter and learn from the previous wakes you have already faced. The Schedule for Next Week

LEAF Sessions: Lake Educational Assistance Foundation (LEAF)The 2024-25 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is an online financial aid application that students should complete if they plan to attend college in the 2024-25 academic year. This form will open up for filing by December 31 at studentaid.gov. The FAFSA is the one form that all colleges, universities, and career technical schools require to allow students to be considered for federal and state-funded need-based aid, including federal loans. It is also the form that MOST schools require to award their own institutional need-based aid. Some colleges (typically private institutions) require a second form like the CSS Profile or their own institutional form posted on their website. Check "Financial Aid" tabs on your schools' websites for requirements and deadlines. Plan to file the FAFSA by Priority Filing Deadlines. These deadlines will vary by institution. You can list up to 20 schools on your FAFSA and they will all receive your information when you submit the one application. If you file your FAFSA by the earliest FAFSA Priority Filing Deadline of all the schools on your list, then they will all receive it on time or ahead of time. Institutional aid is limited. By meeting Priority Filing Deadlines, you are maximizing your aid eligibility. There are steps you can take now to be prepared to file the FAFSA when it opens, including setting up FSA IDs and gathering the needed financials. Closing Message : A message for our students
We are rounding another milestone of the school year. We just have a few regular school weeks left before we head into the midterm schedule. I have spent much of the last two days working with students. One of the experiences that I enjoy is counseling and advising students.
With all of the emotions that we face as students (and staff) outside of the hours of the school day, we often see you and greet you when you are most tired, and lethargic at 7:15 am. Let's be real, mornings are tough for most of us and we are all feeling stressed. Even for the adults that get to school really early--we all need our internal engines to start...and we all have a story that we are bringing to school.
This time of year can impact us differently without us even knowing it. The hustle of school, activities, and the holidays can catch us when we are not ready. What is really important is prioritizing the little things, writing things down, and doing what we can with the time we are given--in school, in class, and with the responsibilities that we all face.
Always know that you are surrounded by people who care for you and want you to be the most successful that you can be at CHS. It is important to seek out help from your teachers for anything: missing assignments, absences, struggle with understanding, not having the energy, or just having someone to listen to you. Your counselors, coaches, staff, and administrators will make the time to be present for your needs. You just need to ask, or have someone ask for you.
We care for you more than you can understand. Take a few moments to reflect on these words, do a little self-reflection internally, and take a deep breath.
One step at a time, one moment at a time, and one day at a time. Together, and that's the key word--TOGETHER--we will transcend as Hilltoppers.
Oftentimes, I feel that I write to just my internal self since I never know who is reading these emails. It only takes one person to make another feel better in the present moment. With that mantra in my head, I wish you a good night and an even better tomorrow. You are loved!

We Give Thanks
Time is inevitable. Time can feel like an endless hand moving over each second and time can go before us in an instant. Time is really about how we use it. I can reflect upon the whirlwind of emotions we all have felt during the time we have spent over the last three months. However, today's edition of the Week in Reflection is an opportunity for my team to reflect on our gratitude to our entire Chardon community.
There are so many extraordinary athletic and academic accolades that our students have accomplished over the short time that we have been together since August. I am so grateful for the collective efforts our students and staff have embarked upon at this moment in time. Allow this short time away to express gratitude to all those that you love.
As principal, I am grateful and love you for who you are, where you are, and where you are going. Keep striving for greatness in all that you do!
Ms. Pavicic, Assistant Principal
I particularly love this time of year, with Thanksgiving being my favorite holiday, and am grateful to have a day dedicated to spending time with my family and to reflecting on the many gifts in my life. School in particular has been such a gift, as a student, athlete, educator, coach, and now as an educational leader, filled with influential people and lessons learned that I still carry with me to this day. I am grateful to now serve in a role to that allows me to witness the many learning experiences of our students, in the classroom, on the field, and on the stage, and their persistence, diligence, and optimism as they encounter all the joys and challenges those experiences bring, alongside the hard work, dedication, and commitment from our staff and families as they support our students through their journeys. It truly takes a village, nothing is ever achieved alone, and I am so grateful to a part of the Chardon village!
I wish all a wonderful, restful, and feastful Thanksgiving! Enjoy the moment!

Mr. Higham , Assistant Principal
At times, these memories make our hearts swell, and they may even produce a feeling of sorrow. Good or bad, this is a driving force of what holidays are about– Thanksgiving specifically. It is universally considered a time of reflection, where we often focus on our blessings and determine how we can support others.
As any educator knows, finding the perfect words can be a challenge, especially for a former mathematics teacher. But with the help of the internet , I was able to find this meaningful Thanksgiving quote from Lionel Hampton.. "Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind." Quotes such as this, remind everyone at this time of year that there’s so much more to the holiday than football, turkey, and all the fixins’. However, that last sentence is not completely true because it is that time of year when our mighty Buckeyes beat TTUN!
Happy Thanksgiving!
~Mr. Higham
Mr. Murray, Principal
One of the best parts of my day is interacting with students. It is hard to believe that we are almost at the halfway point of the school year. We have such wonderful students! I truly love their kindness, energy, creativity, and leadership. I am so grateful for the beauty they give to the Chardon community. I am a better man just by working beside each of them. From sitting with our eighth graders to meeting with our seniors-- I love spending my time with each of them--even with a little more space between us.
I am grateful for the support, encouragement, and assistance that our parents have provided not only me, but to our teachers, coaches, and community. This year has aged all of us, but is through your energy that gives me fuel to get through the events we experience every new day. You continue to model servant leadership to each of us!
Most importantly, I am grateful to my beautiful family that sacrifice so much to be with me. They haven't seen me a ton, but they know how much I love them. My wife is truly my best friend. She is beside me at many events, and she knows how to keep me balanced in all that I do in/out of school. I am blessed to have a Chardon graduate, and another daughter at Chardon, and I look forward to sharing many memories with them as they grow and continue to bless our family.
Thanksgiving is an opportunity to give thanks to the simple things in life: family, friends and familiar fellowship. Let this day be a reminder of how the simple things in life are the strongest reminders of why we work, why we give, and why we serve. Have a beautiful week with your family!

Topper Club Awards
It is our goal that every single person at Chardon High School will graduate finding their purpose. The programs and experiences that you experience at Chardon from grades 8-12 expose you to opportunities to achieve this purpose. More importantly, the relationships that you develop are paramount in your development. Every student matters to us. Taking the time to celebrate achievement collectively provides us the motivation and encouragement to push and strive for success ---so that every student will find their outcome after walking across the stage to further education, immediate employment, enlistment into our armed forces, and even delving into becoming a young entrepreneur. Today, we will celebrate many moments of achievement.
Being a part of the Topper Club is an extraordinary accomplishment. Our students being recognized this morning have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher. Each day, we are educating the future leaders of our ever-changing world. Together, we are witnessing the development of engineers, doctors, lawyers, educators, chemists, advanced manufacturers, cosmetologists, medics, leaders, and philanthropists who see the good in others and respond to the needs of others. We are grateful for their leadership and look forward to the many ways that they will serve our school in the present and the future.
The following slideshow presents all of the students who are being recognized for their academic achievement. We recognized nearly 225 students and 2 staff members during this 45 minute award ceremony!
