February Letter
It’s hard to believe that February 27, 2015 will mark the third year, since the tragedy that struck Chardon High School. Our students and community have come so far in their healing. Not surprisingly, our district is often sited as a model for other schools to assist in their healing after a tragedy. Unfortunately, this happens all too often. In an effort to continue our journey and respectfully honor the memory of Danny, Demetrius, and Russell we will participate in a few events prior to and on Friday, February 27. community have come so far in their healing.
Chardon has always epitomized the standard of community. In an effort to “pay it forward” we will focus on the ideal of community. Starting in mid-February, we will be challenging West Geauga High School in a fundraising drive to support the United Way of Geauga County. Our students have recognized the support this agency has provided us over the last few years and is proud to support their mission. Throughout the month of February, students will also have the opportunity to work with our chapter of Project Linus. Project Linus is a non-profit group that makes and collects blankets. Our blankets will be sent to Marysville-Pilchuk High School in the Seattle, Washington area. Marysville-Pilchuk suffered a school shooting in October and our blankets will be sent to show our support. On Friday, February 27 will be hosting a nationally recognized television and radio personality, and U.S. Naval Academy alumni, Montel Williams. Mr. Williams will be addressing our entire student-body during the day on that Friday. While in Cleveland, Mr. Williams will also be speaking about his battle with Multiple Sclerosis at the Cleveland Clinic. On two separate occasions, Mr. Williams joined our fans in the student section during two different football games. Mr. Williams even received an unofficial membership into our student cheering section, The Chardon Crazies.
Events and anniversaries can trigger emotional feelings for our students. Our students are resilient, but even the strongest of us need to know there are people at Chardon High School that care about each one of them. Below you will find a list of community services that are available to our students and community. Our goal is to respect the views and emotions of all of our students.
Our Remembrance Day Committee along with the input of our students, especially our Senior Class, believes we have created a respectful and compassionate plan that meets the needs of our students and staff while continuing to focus on moving forward.
Thank you for your continued support.
Respectfully,
